I’ve always associated the Cyberpower brand with higher-end custom desktop PCs, but it looks like they’re making an aggressive push into the ultrabook market with the new ZEUS-M. This is a 14.1-inch ultrabook that is supposed to offer “the ideal blend of performance, portability and smart capabilities.”

Power comes by way of an Intel Core i5-3317U Ivy Bridge dual core processor, energy-efficient HM77 chipset, 8GB of RAM, and a 60GB SSD. Yes, you don’t much storage out of that solid state drive, but that’s the tradeoff for added speed, performance and battery life. Of course, being Cyberpower, they’re offering you plenty of customizing options.

For instance, you can upgrade to the Zeus-M2 with 16GB of RAM and a 120GB SSD; it uses the same Core i5 processor though. In both instances, you get a machine that measures under an inch thick and weighs less than four pounds. The rest of the specs are par for the course, like Ethernet, Wi-Fi, 1.3MP webcam, Bluetooth 2.0, and Intel Smart Connect, as well as Intel Rapid Start. There are three USB 3.0 ports too.

Pricing starts at $699 for the CyberpowerPC Zeus-M with the upgraded Zeus-M2 starting at $799.

You had to figure that this was inevitable. After rolling out the “Retina Display” to the iPhone and iPad, Apple brought it to the 15-inch MacBook Pro a short while ago. A new report is now indicating that not only is the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display in the works, but that it will be launching in the next few months. More specifically, they’re looking at a September to October window.

“We think consumers who initially planned to purchase the 13” MacBook Pro and Air will turn to the 13” Retina MacBook Pro instead because it has an attractive panel, its price is similar to MacBook Pro and it has a better balance between power consumption and form factor,” writes Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at KGI Securities. “However, as supply is limited due to panel and assembly yield rate issues, shipment of the 13” Retina MacBook Pro won’t be able to satisfy demand. And we think consumers’ budgets will transfer to new iOS products after Apple launches them, which suggests that overall MacBook shipments will not grow meaningfully on the 13” Retina MacBook Pro.”

Meanwhile, Kuo expects to see a new version of the iPod touch and the iPod nano also for this fall, as well as the rumored iPad mini, a modified new iPad, and new 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMacs. The new iMac will be powered by Ivy Bridge, but they’ve been delayed by screen lamination issues. And let’s not forget that the iPhone 5 is supposed to come out in September or October too.

It looks like Apple and its suppliers are going to be really busy for this back to school season. You’ve got to wonder, though, whether that will hurt potential sales because consumers will have to choose where to spend their money.

The 2012 MacBook Pro with the Retina Display wasn’t the only new notebook announced at WWDC. Apple also unveiled an updated MacBook Air, complete with a beefier processor and faster graphics.

The 2012 MacBook Air retains much the same skinny dimensions as its predecessor, but it gets bumped to Intel Ivy Bridge processors, up to a 2GHz dual-core Core i7. That’s not as fast as the quad-core chips going into the Pro, but you are getting a significantly lighter and thinner package. The Ivy Bridge processor is accompanied by up to 8GB of 1600MHz RAM and “60% faster graphics.” You don’t get discrete graphics though, as the Intel HD Graphics 4000 is still integrated.

Speed is one thing, but you still want storage. The updated MacBook Air has the option of having up to 512GB of flash memory. You’ll also find two USB 3.0 ports, along with the Thunderbolt port. Rounding out the specs are WiFi-n and Bluetooth 4.0, along with the same 5-7 hour battery life. Of course, like the new MacBook Pro, the new MacBook Air also gets MagSafe 2.

There’s no Retina Display on board, unsurprisingly, so the 11-inch model gets a 1366×768 resolution whereas the 13-inch gets a 1440×900 pixel resolution. Prices start at $999 and $1199, respectively.

Intel introduced the “Ultrabook” at Computex in Taipei this week. It’s their new notebook concept that is a mix between the functionality of a tablet and the super slim design of a laptop.

Sean Maloney, Intel’s vice-president revealed that Ultrabooks will be less than 20 mm thick, very light and will be powered by Intel’s <del datetime="2011-06-03T18:46:33+00:00">Atom processors</del> Sandy Bridge processors.

As for the device’s form, Maloney added: “There’ll be some confusion if you look at the fold factor; when you open it you’ll see a PC but if you’re on the go, just fold it and suddenly it’s a tablet.”

He is very optimistic regarding Ultrabook’s future, saying it will hold 40% of the consumer laptop market by the end of 2012. Intel is planning to launch the first Ultrabooks towards the end of 2011. The second Ultrabook wave is expected to hit the market in mid-2012 and be powered by Ivy Bridge processors, while the third Ultrabook version, based on Haswell processors, should be released in 2013. Haswell processors will reduce power consumption by half, Intel announced.

Speaking of processor upgrades, Maloney suggested that Intel’s Atom processors will progress faster than predicted by Moore’s law, evolving from 32 nm to 22 nm and then to 14 nm in just three years.

This will result in a “significant reduction in transistor leakage, lower active power, and an increase of transistor density,” particularly for smartphones, tablets, and netbooks.
