The iTunes App Store is filled with a lot of apps that allow the managing, editing or sharing of photos. Although most of the apps are quite helpful, it’s very rare that we find something that can be called impressive. But the newly launched GroupShot app is pretty special.

If you love taking photos, you should know that it is quite difficult to keep people still while taking snaps. Some tend to blink with perfect timing while some people look away or do something else. Whatever they do, the photo won’t turn out to be what you wanted. That’s where GroupShot comes in.

The new photo editing app, from Israeli-based startup Macadamia Apps, is coming with face-swapping. With the new app, you will be able to select two or more photos from your iPhone’s camera reel, iCloud’s PhotoStream, or from the photos you clicked directly with the cam.

If you want to replace a face on a photo, you just have to rub over the face and the app will automatically swap out the face with a better-looking one from the other photos. The result will be a perfect picture with everyone on it facing the cam and smiling. The app can also select good photos for you to work on.

And while using the app you won’t have to know anything about the complex work that it is doing which includes checking the alignment of different photos, background, where the hair is and more.

The company is planning to launch more image processing apps, including Android ones, in the future. From the looks of things, the upcoming apps are going to be pretty good. You can download GroupShot from here.

We knew that the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch were popular. We knew that people who purchased these devices would inevitably download a few apps. As it turns out, the average is more than just a few. In fact, the average iOS user has downloaded a total of 75 apps. That’s on average.

How did we arrive at this number? Apple has just announced that the App Store has broken the 15 billion download mark. That’s right. Fifteen billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store in its relatively brief history and that comes by way of 200 million iOS users. Some quick math gives us 75 apps per user.

While it took Apple nine months to reach its first billion, the last billion happened in just one month. It helps when you have a huge established user base and a total embrace of the “app” concept. To date, the App Store has over 425,000 apps for your downloading pleasure and Apple has paid over $2.5 billion to developers. That works out to an average earnings of $5,882 per app. I imagine apps like Angry Birds skew that figure just a little.

If you were to cast aside all the potental legal ramifications, the concept and infrastructure behind BitTorrent is quite a brilliant one. Instead of downloading your desired file from a single source, you download little pieces of that file from many other sources. What if you could take the same idea and apply it in reverse for mobile apps?

That’s precisely what Mobile Hunt from Hackulous is designed to do. If it finds an app on your iPhone that is currently not available in its pirate app store, then it will ask to start a background upload of that app from your iPhone to their servers. The same thing will happen to other iPhone users who have the same app until Hackulous has compiled all its little pieces and put together the full app.

Yes, this is going to use up some of your mobile data, to be sure, but it’s for the good of the jailbroken iPhone pirate community. Moving forward, Hackulous plans on creating something similar to Mobile Hunt for the Mac App Store, but it won’t do that until there are enough “crap” apps i the Mac App Store to make a hack store worthwhile.

The screen where it all begins.

JailbreakMe is a web-based process of jailbreaking the iPhone, and its smoother than a ferry ride home from Alcatraz. Although it’s good news if your a timid Apple device owner who is hungry for “unsanctioned” apps, it raises security questions about such an escape.

JailbreakMe unlocks your iOS device by taking advantage of a simple flaw in the way the iOS renders Adobe PDF files. By setting an iOS device free, you can get apps outside of the iTunes App Store, like Cydia, on your iPod, iPhone or iPad. If you get a bit scared and need to get back in the Apple box, no problem, just restore your device in iTunes. Even though the Library of Congress ruled this month that jailbreaking is legal and does not violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, its of course going to put you in the hot seat with Apple if you ever try to make a warranty claim. Apple cautions that these practices will terminate your warranty. Despite Apple’s warning, it’s estimated that 3 million jailbroken devices already exist. But as the number of jailbreakers increase, so is the likelihood that Apple will fix this flaw in an attempt to banish competitors and security threats from their sacred utopia. Besides, what else could this flaw be used to gain, aside from any personal information you may have on disk and a bunch of Apple devices in their stores.

Pranksters have been going into Apple stores and visiting JailbreakMe, then cracking the very demo devices Apple uses to sell to customers. Now of course, this is like tossing some camp fuel on that already roaring fire. If people want to keep JailbreakMe around, their going to have to be a little more hush about it. Apple has already taken steps and blocked Jailbreakme.com from their in-store Wi-Fi network. The next step is a fix for the terrifying exploit, which Apple says is coming this week. As it stands, any website carrying the malicious code that you visit can in effect crack your iDevice and retrieve all your private data, now that’s a bit scary.

You simply go to MobileSafari, enter JailBreakme.com, then push the slider to the right to begin the jailbreaking exploitation process. It downloads, it Jailbreaks, you sit tight.

The information regarding this security hole has been made public by the U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team. The good news is this will force a fix to be made sooner rather then later. The bad news, now malicious clones will be spawned, and until the fix is released, be very careful of what sites you visit on your Apples.

The vulnerability uses FreeType, and this is how it works:

FreeType is a font engine that can open and process font files. FreeType 2 includes the ability to handle a number of font types, including Compact Font Format (CFF). FreeType is used by a number of applications, including PDF readers, web browsers, and other applications. FreeType 2 contains a flaw in the handling of some CFF opcodes, which can result in stack corruption. This can allow arbitrary code execution.

By causing an application that uses FreeType to parse a specially-crafted CFF font, a remote, unauthenticated attacker may be able to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable system. This can occur as the result of opening a PDF document or viewing a web page.

Stay tuned for more updates this week.

There are a variety of apps available for the outdoorsy types on iTunes. EveryTrail app is a free one; connect with Wi-Fi and search for trails, select a location and activity and get a list of trails with details of each trail length, elevation change, duration, history, map and directions to the trail head. Then just save the trip and head on out.

A useful tool for campers and boaters is the What Knot To Do in the Greater Outdoors app. It’s sponsored by Columbia Sportswear and users pick a type of rope and the app explains what knot works best. You can save a list of you favorite knots or look through all the knots. The App demonstrates step-by-step instructions with color pictures for guidance.

The most highly rated camping app at the iTunes app store is the Camp & Hike Checklist app. It provides a large variety of checklists for various outdoor excursions. There is also a feature to add and save your own to-do and checklists with a separate Backpacker Checklist App. This app includes where to buy gear and estimates total weights. Also allows users to group items by their functions eliminating unrelated items. Both apps are available for $0.99 each.

As far as map apps go, for $9.99, TopoPointUSA is available and provides high resolution USGS topographical maps. This app does require Wi-Fi or 3G for the app’s GPS and compass to function, but maps can be downloaded to TopoPointUSA Map Case to use offline.
