Well, that pretty much confirms it. We already knew that Apple would be hosting an event tomorrow and we suspected that a new-generation iPod touch would be revealed. Well, Hard Candy is already announcing cases for the new media player today.

It’s one thing to come across some random generic cases being sold in China, but Hard Candy is a “legitimate” company based out of San Francisco. Today, the firm is proud to say it’s the first to market with protective accessories for the “iTouch 4G.” (It’s always irked me when people say iTouch; it’s an iPod touch, folks.)

Hard Candy Cases founder Tim Hickman said that their sources “learned the specs of the newest iTouch 4G about 30 days ago” and they started working on new cases almost right away. Hard Candy was also first to market with cases for the iPad and iPhone 4.

The new case for the iPod touch 4G is the Hard Candy STreet Skin. It uses a ruggedized TPU body, begins shipping in mid-September, and is priced at $29.95. They’re also releasing an iPod touch 4G version of the Bubble Slider line.

Apple mini touchscreen

As you may have heard already, Apple is planning a special event on September 1 and it is on that day that we expect to see some new iPod 4G offering from Steve Jobs and his team in Cupertino. Well, we have now learned a little more about the upcoming products. Chalk this up to rumor and hearsay for now, but the word is that the next iPod touch will have a flatter appearance, rather than the current curved shape, and a flat surface like the iPhone 4 along with its curved edges. It won’t have the glass back of the iPhone 4, though, opting instead for aluminum or stainless steel. The rumors also call for both a front and rear-facing camera, including FaceTime support.

Over on the iPod nano front, it seems that the touchscreen iPod shuffle we saw earlier this month might actually be the new nano.

Does this mean that the shuffle is being killed off altogether? We can’t say for sure, but we’ll find out in less than a week. Bring it on, Apple!

A couple of months ago we caught a glimpse at what appeared to be the next-generation iPod touch 4G. Well, it seems that we’re getting closer to the real deal, because today’s leak seems to confirm that the iPod touch 4G will have a camera on the back. It’s a little premature to call this a confirmation, but it does add some weight to the rumor that the next iPod touch 4 (whatever you want to call it) will indeed house a digital camera. Based on today’s prototype photo, the next Apple media player has 32GB of storage and a camera at the top of unknown quality; based on earlier reports, two-megapixels sounds about right.

You’ll also notice that this prototype has been tagged with DVT-2. This is important, because that stands for Design Verification Test, which implies an Apple production milestone. The DVT stamp is only added to devices when the design is very close to production-ready. And that makes sense, since the iPod line is probably due for another refresh in time for the new school year in September. What makes me want to yell fake is the fact that it’s based around the old iPhone 3GS shell, wouldn’t the next-generation iPod touch be a bit more resemblant of the iPhone 4?

Reports of Apple working at launching “something new” through their retail chain of stores got mildly noticed this week. Apple Insider reports indicate an internal news bulletin was sent out to employees, details were scarce but the unknown product or service, which may or may not be the iPod Touch 4G, is expected to make a “big” impact.

Retail employees reciting phrases like “It’s Coming!,” and “It’s going to be big!” were featured inside a collection of video clips. This makes us look more closely at Digitimes reports on an updated Apple iPod Touch with A4 processor expected either next month or September. An iPod Touch built around the new iPhone 4 style is a no brainer, and without any cellular capabilities would be a relatively problem free product release for Apple. Although an 83-page Apple document could lean towards a retail store only announcement, detailing mobile kiosks, near-field communications (NFC), and simple barcode scanning in conjunction with an iPhone App titled “Products +” which is expected to help customers with products and services they currently own, or plan to buy in the near future, according to IfoAppleStore.com.

Reports also indicate a new Macbook Air notebook is on the horizon for release in the “second half of the year,” it will of course be “even slimmer and lighter” than the existing ultra slim and ultra light models.

[Apple Insider, Digitimes]

Apple iPod with integrated 2.0 megapixel camera

For the longest time, there were only a handful of things that separated the iPod touch from the Apple iPhone. The cellular connectivity is an obvious one, but it seems that one of the other differentiating factors is also going to be removed. According to the most recent leaks spewing from Apple and out of Vietnam, the upcoming fourth-generation iPod touch will boast a two-megapixel digital camera. Up until now, the iPod touch has been lacking in the photography department, so this is probably a good change for the better. I don’t think it will cannibalize iPhone sales any more than the current iPod touch does.

Just like the leaked photos we found of the iPhone 4G/HD a short while back, these newer leaked pictures are coming out of Vietnam too. In this way, you will want to take the report as a fine grind salt. At the same time, it does seem to make sense. Remember that Apple has already implemented a digital camera in the (cheaper) iPod nano, so why can’t the iPod touch take pictures too? The lower megapixel count compared to the iPhone is a little disappointing, but let’s hope that it at least has autofocus.
