The iPod shuffle is pretty small, but it doesn’t do you much good when you want to go for a dip in the pool with Michael Phelps. For that, you may be much more inclined to check out the UWaterG2 from Fitness Technologies, Inc. They’ve developed the world’s smallest 100% waterproof MP3 player.

From what I can see, it offers a similar clip-like mechanism as the iPod shuffle, but it can head into up to ten feet of water without skipping a beat. It doesn’t appear to be quite as thin, but you could easily clip the player to your goggles or headband. Naturally, you’ll want to make the UWaterG2 with a suitable set of underwater headphones too. It comes with some extendable (12-40″) stereo waterproof earphones, plus four sets of silicon ear-tips and an armband.

Available in five different colors — black/yellow, black/red, black/blue, black, and ice white — the UWaterG2 waterproof MP3 player comes in your choice of three capacities too. Prices start at $59.95 for the tiny 2GB player, but you can upgrade to the 4GB or 8GB model if you prefer too. From what I can gather, it doesn’t have a conventional display (like the iPod shuffle), but it does have a “highly visible multi-color LED mode control” (unlike the shuffle).

I can’t imagine the UWaterG2 replacing your main MP3 player any time soon, especially if you’re the type to use your Android phone or iPhone for that purpose, but it looks like an interesting option for the swimmers or other water sport individuals. Just make sure your silicon ear tips provide a good seal; otherwise, you won’t be able to tell the difference between Annie Lennox and Lenny Kravitz.

Wednesday is shaping up to be the big day for Apple. It’s on that day that they will be reportedly revealing the newest generation of the iPod touch and the iPod nano. We can’t confirm anything just yet, but it looks like Alibaba is spilling the beans ahead of schedule by effectively confirming the new nano.

It’s very possible that Apple would tell its major accessory makers about some of the specs related to upcoming products, so they can start preparing various accessories for its iProducts. If true, what we’re expecting with the six-generation iPod nano is that rumored 1.7-inch touchscreen display, the standard 30-pin iPod connector, and a square shape not unlike the older iPod shuffle.

Based on the relatively small size of this new iPod nano and the lack of rumors regarding a new iPod shuffle (aside from when we thought the little touchscreen was for the shuffle), it’s quite possible that the latter is kicking the bucket. That, or the current shuffle will stick around, sort of like how you can still buy the iPhone 3GS if you really want.

In case you’re curious, the TPU in TPU case stands for thermoplastic polyurethane. That’s basically a “better” version of the usual silicone cases that have been kicking around for generations.

Apple mini touchscreen

As you may have heard already, Apple is planning a special event on September 1 and it is on that day that we expect to see some new iPod 4G offering from Steve Jobs and his team in Cupertino. Well, we have now learned a little more about the upcoming products. Chalk this up to rumor and hearsay for now, but the word is that the next iPod touch will have a flatter appearance, rather than the current curved shape, and a flat surface like the iPhone 4 along with its curved edges. It won’t have the glass back of the iPhone 4, though, opting instead for aluminum or stainless steel. The rumors also call for both a front and rear-facing camera, including FaceTime support.

Over on the iPod nano front, it seems that the touchscreen iPod shuffle we saw earlier this month might actually be the new nano.

Does this mean that the shuffle is being killed off altogether? We can’t say for sure, but we’ll find out in less than a week. Bring it on, Apple!
