Waiting for an iPhone 5 jailbreak? The good news is that an untethered jailbreak method is now out there but isn't ready for prime time just yet.

The post iPhone 5 Untethered Jailbreak Exists, Just Not Ready for for Release into the Wild Yet appeared first on Mobile Magazine.

Considering an iPhone 5 but the lack of an untethered jailbreak method is holding you back? Or already have the iPhone 5 but desperately waiting for a solution that will let you fully unlock your device?

The good news is that a tethereless jailbreak already exists and is out there running on iOS 6.0.2 right now. The bad news is that you can’t have it.

David Wang and several other hackers announced that they had a working solution via Reddit not long ago now, but they are currently not sharing the information due to the fact that they are looking for an alternative way to get the job done.

The reason for this is that there is a significant bug involved for the current jailbreak method, something that Apple could easily squash soon if they release the information now. According to the team behind this jailbreak, they are exploring other ways to provide an untethered jailbreak but if something is not found, they will eventually release their current method as it is.

No matter what happens, the team believes that they will be able to provide some kind of a solution before any new Apple hardware revision ships later this year.

In other words, we have the jailbreak but the wait is still far from over.

In the meantime, head over to TechCrunch via the source link and check out the detailed article about the history of jailbreaking, the search for methods and other jailbreaking related information in order to get a better idea of what is all involved in these massive hacks.

While having a jailbreak in our hands right now would be awesome, we should remember to be thankful for the fact that there are awesome hackers out there that are willing to give us access to such methods completely free to begin with. These are real people doing this in their free-time, so let’s all try to be both thankful and patient.

Do you currently have the iPhone 5 or is the lack of a jailbreak holding you back?

Good news! If you happen to be using the latest version of RedSn0w, you can safely update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iOS 5.1.1 without losing your jailbreak status. This has apparently been confirmed by Redmond Pie, as well as another iOS developer.

Before you go ahead and nab that newest version of iOS, however, you’ll need to download or keep a copy of iOS 5.1 handy. When you’re ready, update your iDevice to iOS 5.1.1 and then open up RedSn0w. From there, specify that it needs to use the old iOS 5.1 file, which will effectively get it to do the previous software jailbreak again. Check off the box to install Cydia too.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that this is still a tethered jailbreak, so you will need to reconnect your iOS device ever time you choose to restart it if you want to keep the jailbreak going.

Wouldn’t it be a great surprise if that iOS 5 jailbreak for the iPhone 4s and iPad 2 would be ready for Christmas? Or how about before Christmas? Developer Pod2g posted a video today, a quick demo of the current status of the 5.0.1 jailbreak running on an iPhone 4. He say’s its nearly “prime” for all devices except the 4S and iPad 2, but we can always hope for the best. The reason for the video? “This is meant to reassure people that were thinking it only works on older iPods.” POD2G blogged.

The caching issues have been taken care of, the A5 cache is not a problem anymore. He fixed it by “doing the untether in a single thread and by flushing all the dcache then all the icache in a row at a strategical point of the process.”

For the tech guys, here is a link explaining issues related to self modifying code ( or code patching ) on the ARM platform : http://blogs.arm.com/software-enablement/141-caches-and-self-modifying-code/

Another news : I discussed with @saurik today about the launchd boot process, and he’s found one missing piece of the puzzle I needed to have a perfectly stable jailbreak. He’s definitly one of the best iOS gurus out there. Thank you saurik!

All we can do is continue to wait “days” while they do their best. The only solution now is a tethered Redsn0w 0.9.9b9b that still does not support iPhone 4s or iPad 2.

JailBreakMe.com is back online and ready to crack that iDevice wide open with the a swipe of a finger. Yes, that day has finally arrived, the iPad 2 Jailbreak is here.

After considerable nudging by the online community (and some weak espionage too), Comex has come forward to launch the web-based jailbreak tool that should work with almost all iOS devices. This includes the much anticipated jailbreak for the iPad 2, that adds support for iOS 4.3.3. The jailbreak itself is done through a PDF exploit and it’s completely done through the Safari browser.

In addition to the iPad 2, JailBreakMe will also work with the first iPad (4.3-4.3.3), iPhone 3GS (4.3-4.3.3), iPhone 4 (4.3-4.3.3), iPhone 4 CDMA (4.2.6-4.2.8), iPod touch 3G (4.3, 4.3.2, 4.3.3) and iPod touch 4G (4.3-4.3.3). It won’t work with the first couple gens of iPhone, but if you’re still rocking something that old, this news probably isn’t that relevant to you anyhow. If you’re not running 4.3.3, you will need to upgrade before visiting the JailbreakMe site. Once you upgrade, make sure to do a power cycle. The process is so fast you wont even believe it happend. Search fo Cydia and you will be good to go .

Four easy steps to Jailbreak the iPad 2

Step 1 Update iOS to 4.3.3

Step 2 Reset Device once update is complete

Step 3 Visit JailBreakme.com on your newly updated iPad 2 version 4.3.3

Step 4 Go to Cydia app

Step 5 Install stuff you never could

Many of the reasons why you may have wanted to jailbreak your iPhone in the past aren’t as valid anymore. You wanted a mobile hotspot and now you have that officially. Even so, there are still reasons why you might want to jailbreak your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, but there are reasons why you might not want to either.

Perhaps the biggest reason why you’d want to avoid jailbreaking is the possibility of stability issues. The jailbreaking process can cause things to “break” and not work as you’d expect them to work, and then you’re left with troubleshooting on your lonesome. Further still, since you’re opening up your iDevice to unauthorized alterations, you could be opening up vulnerabilities for hackers to get their way in there too.

You’ll also have to wait longer for iOS updates, since you have to wait for the jailbreak for the new version to come out first. That’s happening faster than ever, (although the iPad 2 jailbreak is still unavailable) and it’s troublesome, not to mention the increased need to restore more often. This includes not only an iOS restore, but also all your apps, music, photos, videos, and other content.

And yes, even though you might be jailbreaking to gain access to some cool apps, the best apps in Cydia aren’t exactly free either; in fact, they can cost more than an iTunes-sanctioned equivalent. Jailbreaking might not be all its cracked up to be, so weigh the benefits against the headaches to figure out if you still want to do it. Coincidentally, according to Dev-Team, it seems Apple have not patched the most recent exploits, going on number three.

… three in a row! Apple released iOS 4.3.3 on Wednesday, and once again the untethered jailbreak exploit that @i0n1c created for 4.3.1 still works. That makes it an unprecedented three firmwares where the same userland exploit works. We’re not exactly sure why Apple hasn’t fixed the hole yet, but we’re not complaining!

Have they given up on the jailbreaking community? It’s not even illegal, so it’s not like Apple could ever recoup any losses from a lawsuit. And why would they go and sue their own users?

4.3.2 came out fairly quickly after 4.3.1, this “hole” must have slipped passed Apple in the release update since the previous untether update allows for the 4.3.2 kernel to be cracked just the same. We’re still waiting on an iPad 2 jailbreak and this latest redsn0w does not include carrier unlocks.

i0n1c, a German-based security researcher released the much awaited 4.3.1 jailbreak and untether exploit early this morning. The only thing left out is that the iPad 2 is not exploitable. The reason being, Dev-Team reports, is that the iPad 2 is “not susceptible to either limera1n or SHAtter bootrom exploits.” Meaning, the iPad 2 requires a bootrom or iBoot-level exploit to install, and this latest release doesn’t address that. Others who can’t use the 4.3.1 jailbreak are those who use ultrasn0w, Dev-Team further indicates that an ultrasn0w update will need to come soon. They say redsn0w is the way to go.

So what devices support the 4.3.1 untether jailbreak?

iPhone3GS

iPhone4 (GSM)

iPod touch 3G

iPod touch 4G

iPad1

AppleTV 2G (PwnageTool only for now)

The reality of it all, ion1c tweeted “Android = Total freedom to install what you want and never get security updates” shortly afterwards.

That didn’t take very long at all. The new iOS 4.3 was only put out there last week and there’s already a jailbreak for it. Whether you’re rocking iOS 4.3 on an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad, or iPod touch, you can do the jailbreak on your choice of Windows or Mac.

The Mac side of things is already taken care of with PwnageTool, but Windows inclined users can turn their attention to Sn0wbreeze 2.3b1. Yes, that “b” means beta, so you are very much proceeding at your own risk. Also, since iOS 4.3 natively supports a mobile hotspot, you have one fewer reason to do the jailbreak at all.

The process will feel familiar to those who have done a jailbreak before. Download the sofware, follow the menus and choose the appropriate options (like the required .ipsw firmware file for your iDevice), play some optional Pac-Man (I’m not kidding), and wait for the tool to say you’re done. Follow some more on-screen instructions, restore iOS 4.3 custom firmware using iTunes, and do the booting in tethered mode.

It should be noted that there is currently no unlock for iOS 4.3, so don’t do this if you still want to do an unlock on your iPhone.

Every time that the boys and girls in Cupertino push out a new version of iOS and you choose to hit the upgrade button, your once jailbroken iPhone gets back behind its Apple-branded bars.

Sure, you can re-jailbreak your iPhone when the newest solution hits the net, but then you’re stuck having to manually re-apply all the purchases and downloads that you made through the jailbroken scene. The newest version of Cydia will help you, if only a little, in that regard.

No, it won’t automatically provide a new jailbreak solution the moment a new iOS is released, but it will be able to track your purchases and downloads made through the Cydia store. You just need to link up your account with either your Google or Facebook account.

Then, when you manage to re-jailbreak your iDevice, you can hop on over to Cydia and quickly re-apply the jailbroken goods you had once installed on a free device not long before. It’s not perfect, but that’s the price you pay for going against the big Apple.

He may not exactly be a household name, but in the realm of hackers, George “GeoHot” Hotz is highly regarded as a pioneer. He was the first one, after all, to ever jailbreak an iPhone. After turning his attention to the PS3 recently, though, he’s managed to get the attention of Sony’s lawyers.

As you may have heard, Sony is filing a lawsuit against Hotz and the rest of the fail0verflow team for “jailbreaking” the PlayStation 3. The DMCA has been updated to allow for the jailbreaking of “closed OS” devices, but the wording is restricted to mobile phones like Android and iOS. That’s the loophole that Sony is trying to use in this case.

In the video interview posted below from G4′s Attack of the Show, Hotz says it’s all because he made Sony “mad.” You see, it’s not even really an issue of piracy; Hotz just wanted to unlock the “Other OS” feature that was taken away in a recent PS3 firmware update. He wants to run homebrew. “The way piracy was previously done [on PS3] doesn’t work in my jailbreak”, he says. “I made a specific effort while I was working on this to try to enable homebrew without enabling things I do not support, like piracy.”

Considering that Hotz was able to set quite a precedent with the iPhone jailbreak and the subsequent win over the Apple lawsuit, I don’t see why his lawyers can’t extend that precedent to non-mobile closed-OS devices like the PS3 too.
