What if the iPhone were semi-permanently attached to your hand in some weird twist of bio-electronic engineering? We’re getting closer to that reality with the so-called iPhone 5 Spider concept. Instead of being a conventional smartphone that you hold in your hand, it has spider-like legs that wrap around the back of your hand.

Of course, the iPhone Spider is hardly an officially sanctioned design from Apple and it’s unlikely that something like this will ever make it to production. Even so, it does present an interesting way of reinventing the cell phone. It’s like taking the iPod nano watch to a whole new level and, looking to inspiration from sci-fi movies, a hand or wrist-mounted computer really isn’t that far-fetched. It’s what Predator had, after all.

Designer Federico Ciccarese is the creator of the iPhone 5 Spider concept. While spiders have eight legs, this version only has five metallic legs. They wrap around the spaces between your fingers, holding on tightly like a face-grabber from Alien. Hopefully this one actually lets go when you want it to.

According to new reports from within Foxconn, Apple’s iPhone 5 release may be much closer than we previously believed. How much sooner? Actually, we could be seeing it in June of this year.

A Japanese television station World Business Satellite reports that a Foxconn official told it that the company is expecting to begin iPhone 5 shipping in mid-June. The same source says that Foxconn is recruiting as many as 18000 employees to work on the next iPhone 5.

This is likely great news for folks that have been waiting for the iPhone 5 ever since they got duped by the 4S. There have been a lot of rumors surrounding what the next iPhone might look like, or even what it might be called. With the newest iPad simply being called “the new iPad”, there’s some speculation that Apple may do the same with its iPhone line. What will the new iPhone have? Some rumors claim a larger screen, virtual keyboard, no home button, a curved back, it’s hard to say for sure. What we do find likely is that iPhone will follow the iPad’s footsteps and finally introduce 4G LTE support.

The iPhone has always had just the one home button and that button has always been placed underneath the touchscreen on the front. The latest concept for the upcoming iPhone 5, however, takes an entirely different approach. It includes two home buttons placed along the sides of the iDevice instead.

Coming by way of AppAdvice, the newest iPhone 5 concept isn’t a huge departure in design from previous iterations, but you will notice that the round home button underneath is gone. Instead, there’s a “home” button on either side of the device where you finger and thumb would be anyhow. If you squeeze both, you get the same as pressing the single home button as before.

What makes things a little more interesting is that you can press each side home button individually. The side buttons could be used for quickly switching apps, going back and forward, paging through an e-book, and all sorts of other functions, all without having to lift a finger to place on the touchscreen. It’s an interesting idea, but I’m not convinced it’s one that Cupertino will adopt. After all, they’re all about gestures these days.

Say hello to the iPhone SJ. As we anxiously await any kind of formal announcement from Apple about a true iPhone 5 successor to the current iPhone 4S, we turn to the various design studios on the web for insights and inspirations. Here is one such example.

The iPhone SJ is the vision of Antonio De Rosa from ADR Studio in Italy. Of course, this is not at all sanctioned or endorsed by the team in Cupertino, but it could give us a glimpse into what the next iPhone will bring. For starters, this is decidedly thinner than the iPhone 4S, seemingly putting this iDevice in the same slimness league as the new Motorola RAZR Android phone, for example.

The overall design, though, appears to be roughly similar to the iPhone 4S, only squished down. The physical home button, from what I can tell, is still there. The display has gone virtually edge-to-edge, though, and it’s a “totally glass capacitive screen on a polycarbonate lightweight body.” The copy accompanying the concept images also tell us there is a “new core” and a “new camera,” but doesn’t go into any further detail. I imagine the real iPhone 5 will have an Apple A6 (or similar) chip, whatever that means.

What do you think? Is this what the next generation iPhone will look like? What would you change?

Yes, everyone is still talking about the iPhone 4S (and talking to Siri), but that doesn’t mean that we’ve forgotten about the next true generation of Apple’s smartphone. We all know that the iPhone 5 has to be in the works, but what will it look like? Designer Antonio De Rosa has taken it upon himself to show you what could be the new iPhone 5.

Coming by way of ADR Studio, De Rosa had previously shown off his iWatch concept. For his iPhone 5 concept, he culled together the most current rumors and put them together in a clever package. That includes an aluminum or “liquid metal” unibody type body, a capacitive home button in an oval-like shape, a larger 4.3-inch screen that goes nearly edge to edge, an upgraded Apple A6 dual-core processor, and improved versions of both iOS 5 and iCloud.

I don’t know about you, but the stretched out iPhone 5 is starting to look a fair bit like the Android superphones that are out there with their 4+ inch displays. Something like the HTC EVO 4G (sorta, but not really). The edge to edge display looks nice, but I’m not sure I’m a fan of that grey-ish curved back. What do you think? Is this going to be the first iPhone in a post-Jobs era in Cupertino?

3D animation company AatmaStudio has released a cool concept video for the iPhone 5. It looks awesome, but how likely is it that the iPhone 5 could actually have the features shown in the video?

Ultra thin design

Smartphones are getting thinner and thinner, with the title of the world’s slimmest smartphone currently held by the Medias N-04C from Japanese company NEC Casio Mobile. At 7.7mm, the Android handset beats both the Galaxy S II and iPhone 4 when it comes to slimness.

The one in the video looks like it could be even thinner than that, but first camera sensors and radios will have to get smaller, as they typically make up the bulky parts. However, OmniVision recently announced an 8-megapixel camera module that comes in at a build height of just 4.4mm. So this aspect of the concept video doesn’t sound too unreasonable. The question is, will people want a smartphone that thin? At what point does it become uncomfortable to hold?

Laser Keyboard

Projection keyboards have existed for several years, but they’re generally not high-resolution or integrated into the smartphone as shown in the video. The projection keyboards on the market are generally dedicated Bluetooth/USB accessories. The Celluon virtual laser keyboard, for example, is fairly small, light and meant for tablets and smartphones, but is a separate component and uses a red laser beam. A couple more years before it is integrated into the smartphone, perhaps? iPhone 7?

Holographic Projector

Projecting video into thin air without any sort of screen to reflect the light is a bit trickier. Some say it’s just not possible. What do you think? Could we be seeing stuff like this on the iPhone 5, or will this be more of the kind of stuff we’d see on an iPhone 10?
