LifeProof has proven to be one of the best protective cases available for iPhones when considering it’s waterproof and dirtproof capabilities, and with the high cost of our mobiles, it’s completely understandable why a protective case like this one is so popular.

Although the original pricetag for a LifeProof iPhone case is justifiable, you can’t help but wonder if there are any better deals on the market, however if you’ve considered buying a LifeProof case before, or are looking for an extra protective case for your iPhone, then now may be a great time.

Right now you can bag yourself a LifeProof iPhone case for just under $50, saving you a respectable 39%. The LifeProof waterproof case can fit both the iPhone 4 and 4S and will protect your phone from receiving water damage or getting dirt inside the handset.

Despite the protective capabilities of the LifeProof case, I was surprised to find out that the case is very slim, and although it may not have the sturdiness of cases like the Ottobox defender, it certainly is very lightweight and comfortable in the hand.

Check out the deal here.

Most Android phones have a front-facing notification light to let you know that you’ve received a message or push notification of some kind. While the iPhone also has notifications, it only does so with the rear-facing LED flash. If you have your iPhone face-up on a desk, you may never notice that light. With FLASHr, you will.

What Trey DeArk and Terence Green have done here is create a case for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S that effectively reflects the light from the LED flash so that it envelopes the outside of the phone. In effect, your iPhone lights up to let you know that you’ve got a new text message or Facebook update to read. Because the light is reflected in multiple directions around the phone, you’ll see the notification regardless of orientation.

But what if you actually want to use that LED flash to take a picture? There is a small cover that allows the LED light to reflect back into the case for the notifications, but you can slide that cover open to reveal the LED light again. This way, you can take photos as you normally would. Check out the Kickstarter page for more information. They plan on doing multiple colors and the early bird special gives you a free custom combo case with a minimum pledge of $30.

I used to be a stickler for the physical keyboard. That’s why I got the HTC Legend, the Nokia E71, and the Palm Pre 2. They all had physical keyboards, because I didn’t want to wrap my head around a virtual keyboard. That’s changed now, but there are still people out there who like the physical feel of keys. And for those people, there is the QWERTY-packing Spike case for iPhone.

Designed by SoloMatrix, the Spike case is a protective case for the iPhone, except it comes with a clever bonus. The bottom half contains a QWERTY keyboard that can swing out to the front when you need it, and swing around to the back when you don’t. There are two similar designs–the Spike1 and the Spike2–the key difference being that the Spike2 allows the keyboard to flip a full 180-degrees to the back. With the Spike 1, the keyboard only swings out to the side for removal.

What’s great is that neither case requires a Bluetooth connection or external power, so your battery life should be better than the wireless alternatives. The initial run will call for versions in Pitch Black and Ice White. Solomatrix is currently seeking funding by way of a Kickstarter project. If the plan goes ahead, the expected retail will be $35 for the Spike1 and $60 for the Spike2. The current designs are for the iPhone 4/4S, but there are plans for an iPhone 5 version by January.

Don’t you hate it when you’re out on the town, Instagramming and Foursquaring with the best of them, and then the battery on your iPhone dies? That might not be a problem anymore, thanks to the Solacase for iPhone.

Yeah, it’s just another cell phone case with a solar panel on the back. The press release had some bold claims about how you’d never have to charge your iPhone again, but your mileage will certainly vary. It also means that you’ll need to dangle your iPhone out in the world for the solar panel to get its juice. I suppose that’s why it has a hole near the top.

It definitely looks a little on the bulky side, so that’s the tradeoff you’ll need to make for the convenience of some extra juice for your iPhone. The good news is that it’s compatible with all generations of iPhone and there’s even a built-in backup battery to store some extra power. The Solacase follows the same philosophy as the Solapad for iPad and the Solafire for the Kindle Fire.

The Solacase comes by way of Solawerks, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Domark International. It retails for $29.95 and comes in a variety of colors, including four glow in the dark varieties. Yes, becase you want to attract even more attention to the iPhone carelessly dangling from your messenger bag.

While Android superphones are getting equipped with increasingly larger screens, it looks like the iPhone is going to stick with 3.5-inch displays for the time being. What if you wanted to keep using your iDevice, but you wanted to have a display that’s a fair bit bigger? That’s the idea behind the MagniCase.

Currently a project on Kickstarter, MagniCase is a case for the iPhone 4/4S that comes with a built-in magnifying lens. It swings out from the back with an attached arm and it effectively gives you the experience of using a 5.3-inch display, which would be the same size as the Samsung Galaxy Note. The flip-out magnifying Fresnel lens enlarges your display by 50%.

The flip-out design means that you don’t add too much bulk to your iPhone and because the Fresnel lens is made from a shatter-resistant acrylic glass, it can also be used to prop up your iPhone and work like a stand. The retail price for the MagniCase will be $40 and it’ll come in six different colors, but if you pledge $30, you’ll get a free MagniCase with free shipping within the US.

There certainly is no shortage when it comes to cases for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, but how many of these case companies are really willing to stand behind their products? Cellpig is pretty confident their case will keep your phone safe, and that’s why the Cellhelmet comes bundled with one year of insurance.

Right now it’s being offered as a Kickstarter project, but it looks like Cellpig is well under way with getting these ready for market. The Cellhelmet case is meant to be a ruggedized case for your iPhone without being overly bulky or ugly. They use TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane rubber) that has the “feeling of hard rubber, yet it’s not rigid like plastic.”

The case itself isn’t the story; it’s the insurance. So long as you register the product within 30 days of purchase, you’re covered for a year. Go ahead and stomp on it, drop it, or hit it with a baseball bat. With the exception of water damage, you’re covered. They’ll fix your iPhone if it’s fixable; otherwise, they’ll just replace it. The catch is that you have to pay a $50 handling fee each time you send in your phone.

The MSRP on the Pittsburgh-made Cellhelmet will be $44.99, but if you help fund the Kickstarter project, you’ll get it for less. The $40 level includes one of the first Cellhelmets (including the one year of insurance), plus a ticket to their launch party. Go up to $75 and you get two cases and so on. While you can probably find cheaper TPU knockoffs on eBay, none of them will come with this kind of insurance. Not a bad deal, I’d say.

I know. Just another case, right? Considering that I’m here at the Consumer Electronics Show, I am quite literally surrounded by so many different cases that really aren’t all that different from one another, but the Lille Case from Luxa2 actually takes a pretty interesting approach to answering your call.

Designed for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, it’s a leather case that protects the phone all the way around. The trouble with most book-style cases is that they block off the screen and they have to flip them open to do anything. That’s not the case with the Lille. They’ve cut out parts of the front so that you can still slide to answer. There’s also that hole on top so you can see the incoming call.

It’s kind of a strange solution, I guess, and you’ll still need to flip it open to do just about anything other than answer a voice call. This case isn’t really for me, but I get that some people might find it useful, if not amusing.

Who said that the iPhone couldn’t be tough and rugged too? There are some rugged cases out there for the iPhone, but very few offer stellar screen protection. The Case-Mate Tank case for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S changes that, letting you go all rough and rumble in the field.

The outward appearance of the Case-Mate Tank doesn’t look all that special with a thicker rubberized housing, but there’s a special protective and retractable screen cover to keep the display protected. They say that cracked screens make up 67% of damaged iPhones. I’m not sure if I like the aesthetic of the almost corrugated-looking retractable screen cover, but you can’t argue about its added utility.

In addition to its screen-cracking resistance, the Tank also meets or exceeds US DoD standards for sand, dust, shock, drop, wind, rain, and vibration. The textured polycarbonate exterior is said to be 2.5 times more impact resistant than the leading competitor. Bold claims, but the embedded video below helps back those claims. In any case, the Tank is available now for $60.

Getting extra talk time, surfing or game play may be your ticket to maintaing waiting room sanity. The magazines are 7 years old, teeming with bacteria and you know, it’s old news. So is your iPhone running out of juice. PowerSkin on the other hand, is like that backpack reserve you keep with you in stealth mode, boosting your inexplicably insatiable need to remain online at all times. If your mobile is your primary point of contact between you and the outside world, this handy little pack will cut you some slack. It’ll keep you talking about 6 hours more than before. Is it for you? It depends how long you want to go.

Design and Durability

This case is better suited to a pro who is on the road often, every day, where aesthetics are thrown out the door in exchange for performance, reliability and uptime. You’re once dead sexy slim i4 has been taken back in time, it is now a brick. But a brick with 4000mAh of lithium that will be there to see you through any task.

Silicon is a wonderful thing, its squishy and absorbs impacts quite well. Some formulations of it tend to pick up dirt and dust quite easily though, this is one of those. The majority of of the PowerSkin is sheathed in this softer silicon that acts like a dirt tack. The bottom half where your extra power is stored uses a harder “soft touch” plastic that is quite convincibly blended together without too much of a change in feel. As soon as I took it out of the packaging it started clinging to dust. You know what i’m talking about, this is one of these. But on the other hand, it fits nearly perfect. Since you have to shimmy your i4 in on an angle before snapping it in place, the horizontal edges do not sit entirely flush with the glass. We’re talking millimeters here, and it’s docked so the likelihood of it falling out is 0-none, what i’m saying is its not a solid tight fit like a snap together case. This can be a good thing, since it easily snaps in and pops up for you to remove at your convenience.

Specifications

You would think that simply doubling the battery of your i4 wouldn’t warrant a size increase of this magnitude, but it does. Double the power of your iPhone 4 with the PowerSkin and you’re near doubling its physical size too. You go from 93 cm (0.37 inch) up to 1.8 cm (0.70 inch), for some reason PowerSkin’s site shows the spec at 1.96 cm (0.77 inch), but my version was slightly slimmer at 0.16 cm (0.07 inch).

As for power spec, it’s a 2000 mAh NiMH battery, capable of charging itself with a 5V (500mA) draw, recharging you will happen twice as fast at 1000mA (website specs show 500mA, the unit we received was double). A micro-B USB port on the lower right corner plugs in to your computer allowing for charging the pack and syncing your i4 with iTunes.

Bottom Line

For $80 there are other options out there for the same price, same size, and you know, that do the same thing. This is one of your choices, do you want a more brick styled case or a beveled rounded 3G curve? This is a brick. It sits nicely on a desk, may fit fine in your inside pocket, but its going to make a huge bulge if you’re used to keeping your phone in your front pocket. Aside from that, the battery life of your iPhone 4 is more than doubled, giving you twice the power you’ve become accustomed to.

We all know about the delicate of the iPhone 4’s glass back is.
