Geometry Wars to rule them all

Geometry Wars: Touch for iPad

Among the hundreds of iPad apps that go live for download tomorrow is one that stands out among all others, and that my friends, is Geometry Wars. If you own the Xbox 360 you should be well versed in the retro-styled space shooter. Graphics are positively stunning and the gameplay is addictive.

From what I can see, this iPad version looks just as good as the Xbox Live Arcade one. I’ve got a burning suspicion that it makes use of the accelerometer in some way, tilting your way through intergalactic stellar stardust.

Confirmed: Netflix iPad app available tomorrow

Netflix iPad App will give free streaming to Netflix members

The Apple iPad doesn’t officially hit stores until tomorrow, but Apple has already opened the floodgates by releasing many of the iPad apps through iTunes. One of these happens to be theNetflix iPad app and, get this, it fully supports video streaming.

This means that it can do so much more than just queue up some videos for later viewing; you can actually watch all your Netflix content right on your iPad. That’s pretty sweet. The iTunes App Store had screenshots and other information about the Netflix iPad app, but they seem to have been removed it in the meantime should you feel so inclined to read up on it before getting your hands on an iPad this Saturday. Streaming video to your iPad is free to Netflix members on plans starting at just $8.99 a month.

SlingPlayer for iPad won’t make initial launch

Slingplayer App on the Apple iPad

Sling Media has a SlingPlayer app destined for the iPad. Their plan is to move towards H.264 and Silverlight for upcoming versions, quite a leap from their current 320×240 resolution. One thing to think about is the iPad’s resolution of 1024×768 is by no means HD, let alone 720p. So a bit of a slap in the face to those who will actually be paying for 3G data on their iPads.

Microsoft Courier vs. Apple iPad, who will be the farest of them all?

Apple iPad and Microsoft Courier, two very different devices in what appears to be a similar class of products.

What was known to only a few key engineers at Microsoft was leaked earlier this month and referred to as the iPad killer. We now have more information on the Microsoft Courier, and it appears to be a good contender in the emerging segment of tablet devices. But is it a tablet, a digital journal, or a tablet and a digital journal all rolled into one? Perhaps its part of a new segment of devices named Smartbooks. Regardless of what it is, Microsoft is going up against Apple and their latest offering: the iPad.

The Courier is in fact a digital journal and its goal – will wonders never cease – is in fact to make folders and diaries obsolete. If you’re in class or attending a power lunch and even writing down an important individual’s phone number, scribbling on the palm of your hand or a napkin is unnecessary. It looks like paper might just be a thing of the past sooner rather then later. Which is a good thing, because more trees, equals more oxygen for all of us.

iPhone Pro concept could fit the mini iPad bill

iPhoneProSet5

When Apple’s 4th generation iPhone smartphone (iPhone 4G) gets revamped this summer think of how it will compare to the iPad tablet. The iPad is essentially an oversized iPhone, so where will the next gen iPhone be when you lay them out side by side on the table? Is the iPad to the iPhone what the Nano was to the iPod?

Over the past fifteen years computers and media have changed so much with LCD screens, optical mice, USB dongles, devices and lets not forget VHS to CD to DVD.

One thing that has remained constant is the keyboard. But it looks like your keyboard will also become a historical artifact just like desktop computers such as the Amiga, Zx Spectrum and even the Atari ST with the popular tablet PC’s making waves in the market.
