Samsung is right now leading the smartphone race, so something big certainly should come from Apple if they have plans to reach the top again. Apple is expected to bring out their next iPhone at their worldwide developer conference in June. Further evidence that this is happening comes from reports claiming that suppliers are already making the display for the so-called iPhone 5S.

While other companies have already started the manufacturing, the next gen iPhone’s LCD displays from Sharp will enter production in June. All these developments are pointing to a possible launch sometime in June or July.

The iPhone 5S is expected to run iOS 7 and come with an updated processor, a fingerprint sensor, improved cam, and more RAM, among other additions. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has earlier said that the device will take time to arrive due to delays in development of the fingerprint sensor and their next OS.

Meanwhile, the rumored low cost iPhone, which is expected to be unveiled beside the iPhone 5S, could enter mass production sometime in the near future. This has been suggested by a new rumor about Apple supplier Pegatron’s plans to increase its workforce in China by 40 percent in the second half of 2013.

As for their upcoming iPad Mini 2, it is expected to arrive with a high resolution Retina Display, which could delay the manufacturing of the device.

According to sources with Taiwan-based Apple suppliers, AU Optronics is piloting the production of the iPad mini 2. More information on the topic tells us that the 2^nd gen iPad 7.9 inch mini will come equipped with an impressive 2048×1536 pixel resolution.

If true, the second iPad mini will double the screen ppi of the original mini, giving it a beautiful 324 ppi, putting the screen quality at a higher pixel-per-inch than the fourth generation iPad, and just a touch behind the iPhone 5’s retinal 326 PPI.

Although this is by no means an official confirmation, there’s really no doubt that the second iPad mini will come with a boosted display, as the original iPad mini’s grainy resolution certainly was its weak point. The iPad mini has proven to be quite popular, so it’s likely the 2^nd gen will follow in its footsteps. We aren’t sure when we’ll see the iPad mini 2, but I expect it will reach the shelves sometime in 2013, and hopefully Apple will have prepared enough stock to keep it there for a good few weeks.

I expect that the iPad mini will come equipped with some new and pretty hardware; although I think the main appeal will go towards the screen display. The new tablet may also be installed with a new, refreshing iOS design overhaul.

Creators at Apple are evidently already working hard on a new higher resolution and lighter version of the iPad mini.  This report comes from the Apple rumor mill DigiTimes, though it isn’t the first time we’ve heard it.

Keep in mind that DigiTime’s record for getting things right is certainly mixed, though it did recently predict Apple’s addition of retina displays in the Apple Macbook and managed to get it right.

Upgrading the resolution would be the obvious next move as Apple overall is moving to higher resolution displays.  With the iPad, Apple simply doubled the pixel count for its upgrade to “retina”.  So an improved mini would have an expected resolution of 2048 x 1536, which is the current size for the 9.7 inch iPad.

That would provide a pixel density in the 7.9 inch iPad mini of 324 pixels/inch which is about that of the iPhone5.  This would be Apple’s first attempt to use such a high pixel density on anything larger than a smartphone.

While it may be new ground for Apple, these densities have already been used by other manufacturers.  The Google Nexus 10 tablet has a pixel density of 300ppi and the HTC Droid DNA has an impressive 440ppi.

One other change, according to DigiTimes, would be the upgraded reduction in weight.  One change to help with this would be using only one LED light bar, instead of the two currently being utilized.

With Apple currently seeing cannibalization of the regular iPad sales thanks to the Mini, they are probably preparing for a future where the iPad Mini is king. What do you think of this rumor, likely or not?

The iPad Mini is barely out the door and what do we already have? The first iPad Mini 2 rumor is already here. Unsurprisingly, it has to do with the addition of a Retina display.

According to DoNews, sources in Apple’s supply chain reported that AU Optronics is already working on a new 2048 x 1536 display, which will double the pixel density when compared to the iPad Mini. Sources also claim that Apple will use Sharp’s IGZO technology in the second gen iPad Mini.

With the iPad Mini only coming out five days ago, this is really early news but that doesn’t mean it is true. One of the biggest complaints for the iPad Mini is that it is weak and is essentially using 2-year-old technology from the iPad 2 shrunk into a slightly smaller package.

The idea of the 2nd generation iPad Mini getting a power boost and a retina display isn’t far-fetched. If the rumor is true, the iPad Mini 2 will go into production later this year with a Fall 2013 launch. Or they could pull a move like they did with the 4th generation iPad and release this in just a half year or so…. let’s hope not.

True or not, the a second generation 7-inch iPad is (hopefully) a year away. In the meantime, either enjoy the 1st gen iPad Mini or go swing for an 7-inch Android device.
