So close. So very close. Last week, we saw a brief update on the status of an iOS 5 untethered jailbreak. Then, we saw a video, but when is it actually going to get released to the masses? While we still don’t have a timeline, we have to realize that pod2g is just one man and he only has so many hours in the day. So, he’s decided to focus his efforts on developing an Apple A5 jailbreak for the iPhone 4s and iPad 2.

This sentiment was expressed on his blog, where he says: “I need to focus on A5 and hope I can find a path quick, and I have the feeling that chronic-dev could help me.” It’s not that he wants the Chronic Dev Team to help him develop the jailbreak for Apple A5 iDevices; it’s that he wants them to take a load off his shoulders by working on the other project.

Pod2g has sent all the details to the Chronic Dev Team “so that they can finish, test, integrate and release the A4 jb ASAP.” That helps to free up his time and mental space to “put all my energy from now on on the A5.” If you have an iPhone 4S or iPad 2, that’s good news for you, or not, because you are still eagerly awaiting the fix. He might even have a treat for you before the end of the year. He’s hoping.

A little friendly competition never hurt anyone. In fact, it’s usually a good thing for consumers and this happens to be true with the jailbreak community too. Both Pod2g from Chronic Dev-team and MuscleNerd from iPhone Dev-team are working hard to provide an untethered jailbreak for iOS5, particularly with A5-powered iDevices. And they’re both getting awfully close.

While there are already two jailbreak solutions out there for iOS 5, but they’re both tethered and neither works with A5 iDevices (iPhone 4S and iPad 2). The untethered jailbreaks from Chronic Dev-team and iPhone Dev-team sound like they’re almost ready though. Pod2g of Chronic Dev-team posted a video link last Friday demonstrating an untethered jailbreak. MuscleNerd from iPhone Dev-team tweeted that the “upcoming redsn0w release makes both TinyUmbrella and Cydia blob saves useful for 5.0+ (1st verifies, then stitches).” The blob allows for the unlock and jailbreak. MuscleNerd seems a little more bent on a way into A5, but it looks like Pod2g want in on that too.

To make matters even better, the newest iPhone software has “wide open main fs,” meaning that it has an “unencrypted ramdisk with the VFDencypt key in plain text.” What does this mean in layman’s terms? “Everybody can decrypt the filesystem with it.” Another in-road. The untethered jailbreak must be right around the corner.

A huge iOS 5 Jailbreak scam went out early this morning hitting dozens of auto reposting news sites across multiple sources offering an “iOS 5 jailbreak” solution. Several hours after the news, many sites pulled it, but PRWeb and some others like the San Francisco Chronicle got duped by their reposting service and are listing the scam.

We have all been itching to jailbreak our iOS 5 devices, and to take our money and run is fraud, plain and simple. The guys at GhostApp blasted out a release about their iOS 5 jailbreak service for any iOS device: the iPhone 4S, iPad 1, and iPhone 4 too. They claim this will provide an untethered jailbreak to any iDevice except for the iPad 2. So in order to protect everyone out there, we shelled out the $25 that the UK company with a US owned domain wanted. They then gave us login details for us to access this so called jailbreak. So we logged in and to our surprise all the links to the iOS 5 jailbreak were inactive. It’s a good front, but not good enough.

The company claimed the untethered jailbreak is based on the i0n1c untethered exploit and it has been tested by GhostApp.org’s MuscleNerd. The fake unlock sites we have identified are unlockiphone-4s.net, how2unlockiphones.com and ghostapp.org. If you find others, please list them in the comments.

“UnlockuriPhone.com makes no express or implied warranties of any kind relating to the provision of information or service on or by this site ” is how one company tries to justify their actions. We assume they are looking for quick press and then getting the jailbreak info up within the next few days or eventually when it’s released. That’s at least what it looks like considering the other jailbreak solutions are just how to guides using third party software that really are other people’s work that they are charging for.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you likely know what Siri is. This amazing communications technology is the prize jewel when it comes to the iPhone 4S, but what about those of us that are perfectly content with our iPhone 4? Why should we be left out on the latest in artificial intelligence? According to Apple, it’s because the processor in the iPhone 4 just can’t handle the demand of the app and connecting to Apple’s server for Siri communication. This sounds at least somewhat believable, at least until you realize that Steven Troughton-Smith and iPhone developer, Chpwn, have already successfully hacked Siri to run relatively smoothly on Apple’s iPhone 4. The biggest set back is that the microphone in iPhone 4 isn’t as sensitive as the 4s and you do have to raise your voice at Siri in order for it to respond, according to the hackers responsible.

Unfortunately, getting the iPhone 4 to play nice with the Apple Siri Servers isn’t exactly a two-step process; in fact in its current form it takes about 20 steps and requires access to a working jail-broken iPhone 4S. When it comes to hacks, though, the scene can change very quickly and so eventually this could be a much shorter process and require a lot less work to get done. So what can we do for now? At the moment we are limited and can merely play around with the app on our iPhone 4 (and Ipod Touch 4, too), but no connecting to the servers- which is where the magic happens.

Getting the app running on the iPhone 4 or Touch 4 requires Siri files from an 4S, OpenSSH and iFile, an SFTP client, and a Jailbroken iOS 5 operating system. Essentially you just need to extract the files, open the SFTP client and write down the following:

HOST: IP Address of your network from WIFI settings on your iPhone
USERNAME: root
PASSWORD: alpine

Next up, open the directory, { /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ } and copy AssistantServices.framework, which should be located in the files extracted from the iPhone 4S.

Second up, copy all files from SpringBoard_Assistant_pics folder to:
/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app

Once done with all the copying, open iFile and open the same directory from the previous step. You’ll find a file named N90AP.plist for your iPhone or N81AP.plist for your Touch. Tap on that file, edit it and type:

<key>assistant</key><true/>

Then,

<key>720p</key><true/>

Finally, reboot and you should have the Siri app on your iPhone/Touch. Keep in mind, however, that for now this is only the app and until Steven and Chpwn test the server hack a little bit you won’t get a true Siri experience on your phone- just a cool app to fiddle around with.

So in the end, is getting the GUI worth all that effort? If you are the hacker type and enjoy messing around with software, then yes. If not then I would probably wait around until a proven tutorial for communicating with Siri comes around. No matter what though, it seems clear that Apple’s claim that the iPhone 4 can’t handle Siri is, well, just a marketing strategy to sell more iPhone 4S devices after all. Of course don’t get too excited, as proven in previous Siri coverage, Apple is very good about shutting down hacks at every turn.

There is a distinct difference between a tethered and an untethered jailbreak for iDevices. With the former, you get stuck at the Apple logo every time that you reboot your iPhone or iPad unless you plug it back into a PC. That’s not the case with an untethered jailbreak. So, what exactly is a “semi-tethered” jailbreak then?

Well, it’s somewhere in between. A tethered jailbreak for iOS 5 has been around for some time, but no one has come up with an untethered jailbreak yet. With the semi-tethered jailbreak from Big Boss (you can get full instructions on TheBigBoss.org), you get some of your core functionality back when you reboot the device, even without having to reconnect back to a PC or Mac.

This isn’t quite as good as truly untethered, but it’s a start. When you run out of juice on the road or need to reboot your iDevice for whatever reason, at least you can still make calls and send and receive text messages. The semitethered jailbreak also allows for other stock apps too. While you can’t use mobile Safari, you can use other web browsers like Atomic.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that this iOS 5 semi-tethered jailbreak still doesn’t work with the iPhone 4S.
