Although remotely triggering a DSLR camera is nothing new, the Kickstarter-funded Triggertrap was a bit more exciting as it allowed you to do that via diverse stimuli like lights and sounds. But as of late, it has got a lot more exciting when the company introduced the Triggertrap Mobile app. What once cost $75, is now just $19.98 for both the software and hardware.

The app will run on any iPhone, iPad or iPod that uses iOS 5, and you will have to buy a $9.99 dongle which should be connected to your DSLR by cable or infrared. Connect the dongle to your iDevice and then you can simply use your device’s sensors as triggers (motion, facial recognition and more).

The app, which will also gives you control over the focus and flash, works with over 300 cameras and specialises in distance-lapse and time-lapse photography. Its Distance-Lapse mode utilizes your device’s GPS to take a photo every so many meters. Stitch the photos together and the whole road trip will look as if it took place at the same speed. Via the Eased Timelapse mode, the stitched videos speed up at the beginning and slow down towards the end.

There’s no need to worry if you do not have a separate camera as the app will work fine with the iOS device’s built-in camera. There is also a free version of the app, but that just features three modes. Check out the videos to know more about Triggertrap.

Have you ever wanted to check the weather on your iPhone, but didn’t want to fumble through to unlock the device, open the app, and wait for the info to show up? Forecast makes things much easier, because it puts the weather report right there on the lock screen.

The functionality is remarkably simple. The part of the iOS 5 lock screen that normally only shows the date and the time is redesigned to include a weather image, the high and low temperature, the current temperature, and last updated time. Yes, this means that your clock will have to be a bit smaller, but that’s a small price to pay to have weather at your fingertips like that. Just keep in mind that having the weather widget run in the background like that will consume data.

This really isn’t terribly different from the countless weather widgets available for the Android platform, but it is nice that you don’t even need to unlock the phone to see the report. You can even switch between the current weather and the weekly forecast simply by swiping from side to side. Not surprisingly, this is a Cydia hack, so you will need to jailbreak that iPhone before getting Forecast. Find it in the ModMyi repository on Cydia for 99 cents.

A4 release

Hello, as expected, the Chronic Dev Team and the iPhone Dev Team have released the A4 untethered for 5.0.1 based on my work.

It is exactly the same set of files, either distributed as a Cydia package for those that are already tethered or a redsn0w bundle for new users. They both did a great job testing and integrating the payload. Here are the links to their respective blog posts :

- Chronic Dev Team : http://greenpois0n.com/?p=150

- iPhone Dev Team : http://blog.iphone-dev.org

temporary redsn0w download links: http://pastie.org/3078869

iPhone Dev Team has revealed a clear step-by-step procedure for jailbreaking your A4 device:

A few days ago, @pod2g gave the untether to both the iPhone devteam and the chronic devteam. We’ve put it into redsn0w 0.9.10 and PwnageTool, and the chronic devteam put it into a Cydia package (the same set of exploits is in all three).

Here are the basic steps for how to get it:

The untether is for iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone3GS, iPhone4, iPhone4-CDMA, iPad1, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G

If you have one of those devices and are not on 5.0.1 yet, update now! The SHSH window is still open for 5.0.1 If you unlock via ultrasn0w or gevey, make sure you only get to 5.0.1 via a custom IPSW! See the guides at places like iClarified.com if you don’t know how. Once you’re at 5.0.1, use the latest redsn0w 0.9.10 to both jailbreak and untether.

If you’re already at 5.0.1 with a tethered jailbreak, you have two choices: either run redsn0w 0.9.10 over your current jailbreak (deselect “Install Cydia” if you do that), or install the Cydia package prepared by the chronic devteam. The patches are the same regardless of which you choose.

Some of you are using a hybrid 5.0/5.0.1 configuration. If so, do not attempt to install this untether over that setup! You will most likely get into a reboot cycle. Do a sync and fresh restore to 5.0.1 then install the jailbreak + untether.

That’s it, for non-A5 iDevices. If you followed the procedure religiously, the jailbreak has been reported in more than 1,000 comments as successful. A slightly different procedure for implementing pod2g jailbreak can be found here. 200+ comments so far, plenty of happy campers among them.

Keep following us if you are waiting for A5 untethered jailbreak. It’s coming soon.

Wouldn’t it be a great surprise if that iOS 5 jailbreak for the iPhone 4s and iPad 2 would be ready for Christmas? Or how about before Christmas? Developer Pod2g posted a video today, a quick demo of the current status of the 5.0.1 jailbreak running on an iPhone 4. He say’s its nearly “prime” for all devices except the 4S and iPad 2, but we can always hope for the best. The reason for the video? “This is meant to reassure people that were thinking it only works on older iPods.” POD2G blogged.

The caching issues have been taken care of, the A5 cache is not a problem anymore. He fixed it by “doing the untether in a single thread and by flushing all the dcache then all the icache in a row at a strategical point of the process.”

For the tech guys, here is a link explaining issues related to self modifying code ( or code patching ) on the ARM platform : http://blogs.arm.com/software-enablement/141-caches-and-self-modifying-code/

Another news : I discussed with @saurik today about the launchd boot process, and he’s found one missing piece of the puzzle I needed to have a perfectly stable jailbreak. He’s definitly one of the best iOS gurus out there. Thank you saurik!

All we can do is continue to wait “days” while they do their best. The only solution now is a tethered Redsn0w 0.9.9b9b that still does not support iPhone 4s or iPad 2.

We gave you the details this past weekend that there was an iOS 5 jailbreak in the works from Pod2g (Chronic Dev-team) and MuscleNerd from (iPhone Dev-team). Well, low and behold, today the group has released Redsn0w 0.9.9b9b, adding native support for iOS 5.0.1 but still unable to crack the iPhone 4s and iPad 2. Pod2g blogged how “The untether fails right now because I’m having processor cache issues.”

This jailbreak will allow most devices to manually load IPSWs. If you have an iPhone 3GS and old bootrooms you can create IPSW files without blobs. However, this jailbreak is still tethered.

There are also some reports of lost functionality with the jailbreak, like loss of the ability to download over-the-air operating system updates from Apple is an obvious, and some new problems with the Skype app for iOS. Mobile Support Forum has a thread going with more details and download links to the files.

The tech blogs Netbooknews and Pocketlint both recently reported that in China they have a Nokia N9 phone running seven different OSes, switchable by the fling of a finger. (Recent information has corrected that this is in fact a Chinese Clone calling itself a Nokia N9, and not the real hardware.)

This sensational feat has the N9 running all the following concurrently:

MeeGo

iOS 5

HTC Sense (Android),

Windows Phone 7

BlackBerry OS

Samsung’s TouchWiz (Android again)

Symbian Anna.

Even if it counts like 6 “Operating Systems” and not 7, it’s still a feat that is demoed in the video link here. I want to apologize for not putting the video up in a window, but there seemed to be some difficulty getting this Chinese-originated video to embed.

Essentially this all-in-Chinese video shows a N9 switching between multiple customized instances. To make this clear, these are merely instances and the N9 is not REALLY running all these operating systems, instead it is customized to look like it is.

This collection of more or less good “customizations” are really most likely running on MeeGo, which is struggles to keep alive and relevant these days.

As Wikipedia teaches us:

Strictly speaking, the Nokia N9 does not run MeeGo 1.2 as its operating system. It instead runs what Nokia refers to as a “MeeGo instance”. During the development of Harmattan (previously marketed as Maemo 6), Nokia and Intel merged their open source projects into one new common project called MeeGo.

Jokes of 7 OSes aside, MeeGo’s chameleon abilities to run many customizations without rebooting remains quite spectacular. MeeGo Tablet UX customization principles were recently reported at the MeeGo Conference 2011 in San Francisco. There’s also quite a sizable MeeGo community that is striving to keep all such “MeeGo instances” relevant.

On top of that, there’s also a distant possibility that MeeGo might have some secret virtualization capabilities, similar to the Android App Player running on Blackberry OS 2.

I don’t believe there are some “instances” of QNX (RIM Blackberry OS), or Apple’s iOS 5.0 somewhere in the wild and running on “wrong” hardware with MeeGo. Still, it may happen one day or maybe not at all, but in any case MeeGo is fun and you should enjoy it if you can and while it lasts.

UPDATE: While still interesting to see a device that runs 7 unique customizations, many of our users have indicated this is in fact a Chinese clone and not the real N9. The real hardware in the clone is somewhat unknown. Still, this $65 clone running 7 different customizations is pretty interesting.

It doesn’t take Apple very long to start bringing out updates for iOS, and now the time has come for a developer beta of iOS 5.1. The beta of iOS 5.1 is compatible with iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad and the third and fourth generation iPod touch devices.

The new build follows the company’s recent release of 5.0.1 which was aimed at fixing a couple of important bugs, including the iPhone 4S battery issue that still appears to be affecting some users.

Early on, there were reports that suggested that 5.1 would bring new features to Siri including hardware controls which will allow iPhone 4S users to adjust Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios through the voice-controlled assistant. For now it appears like the new version of iOS does not bring these changes.

The release notes of the software, which comes to us courtesy of BGR, do not reveal any major features at all.

The update looks to be a minor one that is coming with fixes for issues affecting Music Player, Newsstand and Game Center. There are also some changes in the APIs and iCloud storage.

What is interesting is that the folks over at 9to5Mac have discovered reference to two new iPad models, “iPad 2,4” and “iPad 3,3”, in the beta software.

The iPad 2,4 is thought to be a new version of the iPad 2 that might get released on Sprint’s 3G network. As you might know, 3G iPads are only available on AT&T and Verizon in the US. The tablet may also be a version meant for other networks around the world.

For those that were hoping for some major changes in this version, it seems you will have to wait a little longer. Perhaps in iOS 5.2, Apple will grant our wish and add hardware controls to Siri.

There is a distinct difference between a tethered and an untethered jailbreak for iDevices. With the former, you get stuck at the Apple logo every time that you reboot your iPhone or iPad unless you plug it back into a PC. That’s not the case with an untethered jailbreak. So, what exactly is a “semi-tethered” jailbreak then?

Well, it’s somewhere in between. A tethered jailbreak for iOS 5 has been around for some time, but no one has come up with an untethered jailbreak yet. With the semi-tethered jailbreak from Big Boss (you can get full instructions on TheBigBoss.org), you get some of your core functionality back when you reboot the device, even without having to reconnect back to a PC or Mac.

This isn’t quite as good as truly untethered, but it’s a start. When you run out of juice on the road or need to reboot your iDevice for whatever reason, at least you can still make calls and send and receive text messages. The semitethered jailbreak also allows for other stock apps too. While you can’t use mobile Safari, you can use other web browsers like Atomic.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that this iOS 5 semi-tethered jailbreak still doesn’t work with the iPhone 4S.

Shortly after the new iOS 5 update, reports claim that many users have encountered problems when they try to upgrade. Some of these problems include lengthy downloads, deleted contacts, paid apps that disappear and many more. My family and acquaintances have had their share of the problems, with the bricked phone being the most common. They had no choice but to do the factory reset, and the painful result is erased notes, photos, videos, and contacts.

The post Thinking of Upgrading Your iPhone to iOS 5? appeared first on Mobile Magazine.

Some of us were excited when Apple announced the iOS 5 roll out. Unfortunately, reports claim that many iPhone owners who have upgraded are encountering problems. The problems range from lengthy downloads, lost contacts, paid apps that disappear and even bricked phones. Several of my friends bricked their phone and were left with no choice but to do a factory reset, and the painful result is erased notes, photos, videos, and contacts.

Users started tweeting about the problems about an hour after iOS 5 was rolled out. Here are some of the reported cases with suggested fixes, but some do not have any solutions yet. These might give you a clue on what to do if you face the same situation.

“Error-34”: This means that iTunes is reporting to the Apple server that your disk no longer has sufficient space but for some users, this may not be the case. There is no solution to this one yet but the error arises when users compress their files to 128 kbps. In the upgrade, the file is being reverted to its uncompressed form so the problem emerges.

“Internal Error 3200”: This one indicates that the authentication servers of Apple are not responding. To fix this, Apple has opened new server space to enable faster downloading but the demand for the update is now declining because of the problems the users have encountered.

“Error 1603”: The cause of this problem is still unidentified. It is supposed to put your iPod or iPhone into recovery mode but it has failed to perform that. This is the case of the “bricked” device as referred to by the users. The only solution to this is to put your phone into forced recovery mode and be prepared to lose your stored data. It is indeed a great idea to make some back-up copies of your data before updating your operating system.

When putting your phone into forced recovery, follow the enumerated steps:

- Disconnect the USB cable from your iPod or iPhone but make sure to leave the other end connected to the computer.

- Do not forget to turn off your device. After this, a red slider will appear. Slide this one and wait until your phone shuts off. If the power button does not turn off the device, press the Sleep/wake button or the home button until it shuts off.

- The Home button should be pressed and held while reconnecting the USB cable to the phone and until the device turns on.

- Release the button when “Connect to iTunes” screen appears. Follow the prompts.

Twitter users will love to hear that the social networking platform has become fully integrated into the new iOS 5 mobile operating system by Apple. Today, available for the first time you can read and share tweets using your iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone seamlessly from within the OS. Unfortunately some users are having issues with iOS 5 upgrades which end up bricking their phone, but that may be a rare instance.

How do you use it? Well, its very simple. Just enter your login information on Twitter using your device and voila! You will always be connected to the site. In addition to this, the integrated Twitter for iOS 5 will allow you to tweet directly from the Apple apps such as Maps, Camera, Safari, Photos, Youtube and many more. Third party apps can also be used to make direct tweets like the Flipboard, Instagram, popSugar, LivingSocial, Chomp, Showyou, SoundTracking and many more.

Take advantage of the most recent Twitter version for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch which lets you upload images directly to Twitter. You can get the Twitter app now by downloading it from the App Store.
