Good news! If you happen to be using the latest version of RedSn0w, you can safely update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iOS 5.1.1 without losing your jailbreak status. This has apparently been confirmed by Redmond Pie, as well as another iOS developer.

Before you go ahead and nab that newest version of iOS, however, you’ll need to download or keep a copy of iOS 5.1 handy. When you’re ready, update your iDevice to iOS 5.1.1 and then open up RedSn0w. From there, specify that it needs to use the old iOS 5.1 file, which will effectively get it to do the previous software jailbreak again. Check off the box to install Cydia too.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that this is still a tethered jailbreak, so you will need to reconnect your iOS device ever time you choose to restart it if you want to keep the jailbreak going.

Imagine you were going on a road trip, driving down a stretch a highway, and you glance down to see that you have a full tank of gas. You drive a little longer and see a sign that says there will be no more gas stations for over 200 miles. You look at your gas gauge again and see that you are easily 90% full. No worries. A few minutes later, you look down again and you see that you have less than half a tank. Uh oh.

Now, replace your car and its gas tank with your iPhone and its battery pack. That’s exactly what seems to be happening with the iOS 5.1 update to some users in Japan. The battery reading on the iPhone has become wildly unreliable, making huge jumps in percentage in a matter of moments.

The guys at Rocket News did a test where they topped up the iPhone to 100% and proceeded to play a saved video without stopping. After letting the video play for about an hour and a half (1:15pm to 2:43pm), the iPhone showed it still had 93% battery life. That would be impressive, except that the battery reading then proceeded to flip to 50% mere moments later.

Considering how much we’ve come to rely on our smartphones, having a fairly reliable reading of the remaining battery life is pretty paramount. After all, it doesn’t matter that Siri can speak Japanese if she unexpectedly becomes unavailable because of a dead battery.

Apple might be a bit busy preparing for the official launch of their next generation iPad and iOS 5.1. But it appears like they will have to find more time to fix a new bug in iOS 5.0.1 which allows a person to get unauthorized access to the contacts and the calling features of an iPhone.

The details on the new issue comes courtesy of iPhoneislam, who believe that it is a “major” flaw. But after watching the video, you will most probably agree with us on the fact that the passcode bypassing allowed by this bug is quite difficult to pull off.

The hack involves inserting and ejecting the iPhone’s SIM card, while you try to call the device. If you perform this for long enough, you will eventually get access to the phone app, and you will be able to make calls as well. But for the hack to work, it is required that you know the victim’s phone number (or have a spare SIM card) and a strong belief that it can be done.

It appears to be a very minor bug, but still, it won’t be very nice if someone who stole your iPhone gets free access to your contacts. Apple will most likely release a fix for it along with the upcoming iOS 5.1. In the meantime, you can check out the guy sweating it out in the video below.

The tech world is anxiously awaiting the arrival of Apple’s next generation iPad as well as the next version of their mobile OS, iOS 5.1. So far there hasn’t been any confirmation about the release date or the features of both the products. But it appears like some folks have gained access to a pre-GM version of iOS 5.1, screenshots of which have revealed upcoming features.

As you can see in the above image, iOS 5.1 may arrive with a new lockscreen camera slider. This will allow you to launch the camera app directly from the lockscreen with a vertical sliding action on the new icon. That’s certainly something that will be really useful for taking snaps quickly and easily.

Just in case you are wondering, you have to double press the home button for summoning up the camera button in current versions. There were rumors flying around earlier that suggested Siri will be supporting Japanese iPhone 4S owners in the future. The above screenshot of Siri’s settings is evidence on the matter. As you already know, Nuance is the driving force behind Siri and it’s worth noting that Nuance’s Dragon Dictation already supports Japanese. So a Japanese Siri is certainly not far away.

Rumors suggest that Apple will most likely release iOS 5.1 alongside iPad 3 on March 7th. But make sure you stay tuned to this space for updates.

But whatever the reason is behind it, it appears like Apple will always be deciding on who all will be playing with the voice assistant. They have killed Siri on jailbroken iOS devices other than the iPhone 4S.

Just in case you missed a few earlier reports, the jailbreaking crowd found it quite hard to make Siri available on older iDevices since the feature has to establish a connection with Apple’s servers. It was the release of a revised version of iOS 5.0.1 that allowed jailbreakers access to the files of Siri. You can guess what happened next.

Spire, the Siri porting tool, arrived for all jailbroken iDevices which run iOS 5. The new update that Apple has released disables this tool. The update brings a new “SetActivationToken” plist file which prevents Spire from establishing a successful connection with the servers.

So, that’s it. Goodbye to Siri on iDevices other than 4S. But as soon as this attack was reported, a fix for it surfaced. Apparently users can use a file management tool and get Siri back after deleting a file called com.apple.assistant.plist. But Apple might be already working on a strike against that as well. And the forthcoming iOS 5.1 will most likely bring an even bigger block to Siri clones, and the cycle will continue.

When making a list of top products we want to see in 2012, the iPad 3 certainly seems to top that list.

We know of the Apple Education event coming on the 19th. Well, leave it to someone to speculate that this event will actually be an iPad 3 launch event. What we do know is that it could potentially show off the new iOS 5.1, which is currently in developer testing. While the source of the rumors, Macotakara, has had a mixed track record in the past, recently many of their rumors have been corroborated by more trust-worthy names like Bloomberg. I do find it a little curious that there would be a one-month gap between introduction and availability, since this is much longer than what we saw with the iPad 2. The iPad 2 was introduced March 2nd and was available just nine days later. For now, just don’t get your hopes up. Still, a launch of the iPad 3 in the first half of 2012 does make a lot of sense.

With CES just around the corner, Apple’s announcements are nearly always strategically positioned just a few weeks afterwards. When that happens we can always assume that the Cupertino company is going to one up everyone else just when they believed they had come out with something new and revolutionary. Even while CES is happening Apple is usually stealing the show with their leaks and rumors of what is up and coming. 2012 is no exception.

This time around it may be bigger than we think. Although the A5 was released in the iPad 2, it wasn’t available in an Apple iPhone until the recently released iPhone 4s. Now with that said, the dual-core A5 chip is speedy enough to handle Siri and a whole multitude of resource hungry apps. But if the recent discovery of some clever developers is to be believed, Apple may be coming out with quad-core A6 chips sooner, rather than later.

These developers have uncovered something in the iOS 5.1 beta code that indicates support for quad-core iPhones and iPads. A few months back developers discovered the iPhone 5.1 reference buried within the iOS 5.1 beta code, now it’s this.

Does this mean we will hear about an iPhone 5 announcement soon? Will that iPhone 5 have a quad-core A6 processor? It’s all speculation at this time. Apple could have put this code in to make competitors nervous, but Apple is a company that actually does things, rather than making it look like their doing things. If this evidence of a quad-core A6 supported in iOS 5.1 beta software is to believed, we can assume it’s really coming.
