Apple might be a bit busy preparing for the official launch of their next generation iPad and iOS 5.1. But it appears like they will have to find more time to fix a new bug in iOS 5.0.1 which allows a person to get unauthorized access to the contacts and the calling features of an iPhone.

The details on the new issue comes courtesy of iPhoneislam, who believe that it is a “major” flaw. But after watching the video, you will most probably agree with us on the fact that the passcode bypassing allowed by this bug is quite difficult to pull off.

The hack involves inserting and ejecting the iPhone’s SIM card, while you try to call the device. If you perform this for long enough, you will eventually get access to the phone app, and you will be able to make calls as well. But for the hack to work, it is required that you know the victim’s phone number (or have a spare SIM card) and a strong belief that it can be done.

It appears to be a very minor bug, but still, it won’t be very nice if someone who stole your iPhone gets free access to your contacts. Apple will most likely release a fix for it along with the upcoming iOS 5.1. In the meantime, you can check out the guy sweating it out in the video below.

But whatever the reason is behind it, it appears like Apple will always be deciding on who all will be playing with the voice assistant. They have killed Siri on jailbroken iOS devices other than the iPhone 4S.

Just in case you missed a few earlier reports, the jailbreaking crowd found it quite hard to make Siri available on older iDevices since the feature has to establish a connection with Apple’s servers. It was the release of a revised version of iOS 5.0.1 that allowed jailbreakers access to the files of Siri. You can guess what happened next.

Spire, the Siri porting tool, arrived for all jailbroken iDevices which run iOS 5. The new update that Apple has released disables this tool. The update brings a new “SetActivationToken” plist file which prevents Spire from establishing a successful connection with the servers.

So, that’s it. Goodbye to Siri on iDevices other than 4S. But as soon as this attack was reported, a fix for it surfaced. Apparently users can use a file management tool and get Siri back after deleting a file called com.apple.assistant.plist. But Apple might be already working on a strike against that as well. And the forthcoming iOS 5.1 will most likely bring an even bigger block to Siri clones, and the cycle will continue.

Dream Team is making some major headway when it comes to jailbreaking the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1. Pod2g and others on the team have been working hard to jailbreak the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, both of these devices use the A5 chip which has proven to be a tough one to crack. But the iOS Hackers do not give up easily. Last few days have been very exciting and much progress has been made, pod2g posted a video on youtube showing an iPhone 4S with untethered Jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1.

To be noted on a few days earlier pod2g had confirmed on his blog ” jailbreak is only a matter of days away”.

Much progress has been made on the iPad 2 Jailbreak as well. Only a day after pod2g demoed the iPhone 4S jailbreak, he posted an image showing an iPad 2 jailbroken and running Cydia on iOS 5.0.1. Since both iPhone 4S and iPad 2 use A5 chip, the jailbreak will work on both devices once it is released into the wild.

@planetbeing also tweeted a photo of an iPad 2 that has been jailbroken. He confirmed that the popular Jailbreak tweak “IntelliScreenX” that he helped write works on the iPad 2 right out of the Box.

The iPad 2 and iPhone 4S jailbreak is Almost here! As of right now jailbreaking the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 has only been successful on the iOS 5.0.1.

If you are looking forward to jailbreaking your iPhone 4S or iPad 2, if you haven’t already we suggest that you upgrade your iDevice to iOS 5.0.1 as fast as possible via iTunes. Apple may release an iOS update to counter the jailbreak. If your device happens to be not the iOS 5.0.1 and Apple releases a new version you will not be able to jailbreak your iPhone 4S or iPad 2. You can also back up the SHSH blobs of your iDevice in order to make sure you can downgrade your iDevice to iOS 5.0.1 in future by using TinyUmbrella.

[Update Jan.17 4:26PM]

Concerns Unlocking iPhone 4S – iPhone 4S & iPad 2 Jailbreak will also be released for iOS 5.0

@MuscleNerd has confirmed that the untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4S will be able to jailbreak any iPhone 4S on iOS 5.0! So there is no need to update your iDevice to iOS 5.0.1 if you do not wish to update.

Important : If you own an iPhone 4S and want to unlock it, @MuscleNerd suggests that you stay on iOS 5.0. Since the jailbreak will now be released for IOS 5.0 as well, it makes total sense to keep your iPhone 4S’s baseband at the lowest possible version. If you have upgraded to iOS 5.0.1 you can still downgrade to iOS 5.0. iOS 5.0 is preffered if you want to unlock your iPhone 4S since the baseband is different on both of these iOS versions, it is more likely that an unlock will be discovered on an earlier build then the newer one. There is no guaranty as to if the unlock will be found for sure, but in this case @MuscleNerd had previously stated that possibility of an iPhone 4S unlock was looking “very promising.”

How to Downgrade from IOS 5.0.1 to iOS 5.0

Download the iOS 5.0 – [iPhone 4S]: iPhone4,1 5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw

Hook your iPhone to iTunes via USB.

On Windows – Hold the Shift key on the keyboard & click restore button in iTunes.

On Mac – Hold the Option key on the keyboard & click restore button in iTunes.

A pop up will come – Navigate to where you downloaded iPhone4,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw & double click it or select it *& click Open button.

Restore should begin & once finished your iDevice should be on iOS 5.0

Wouldn’t it be a great surprise if that iOS 5 jailbreak for the iPhone 4s and iPad 2 would be ready for Christmas? Or how about before Christmas? Developer Pod2g posted a video today, a quick demo of the current status of the 5.0.1 jailbreak running on an iPhone 4. He say’s its nearly “prime” for all devices except the 4S and iPad 2, but we can always hope for the best. The reason for the video? “This is meant to reassure people that were thinking it only works on older iPods.” POD2G blogged.

The caching issues have been taken care of, the A5 cache is not a problem anymore. He fixed it by “doing the untether in a single thread and by flushing all the dcache then all the icache in a row at a strategical point of the process.”

For the tech guys, here is a link explaining issues related to self modifying code ( or code patching ) on the ARM platform : http://blogs.arm.com/software-enablement/141-caches-and-self-modifying-code/

Another news : I discussed with @saurik today about the launchd boot process, and he’s found one missing piece of the puzzle I needed to have a perfectly stable jailbreak. He’s definitly one of the best iOS gurus out there. Thank you saurik!

All we can do is continue to wait “days” while they do their best. The only solution now is a tethered Redsn0w 0.9.9b9b that still does not support iPhone 4s or iPad 2.
