It’s not very often that you see great deals on MacBooks, because Apple maintains pretty stringent control over pricing. This is one of those rare occasions where you can save a solid $200 off a new MacBook Pro.

It’s the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro that’s on sale with a 500GB hard drive. You get a 2.4GHz dual core Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of DDR3-1333 RAM, 8x DVD/CD SuperDrive, Intel HD Graphics 3000, 7-hour battery life, and Mac OS X v10.7 Lion. Other features on this MacBook Pro include the FaceTime HD camera, Thunderbolt port, SDXC card slot, Bluetooth, and FireWire 800. And yes, that signature unibody design is in tow too.

The 500GB model in the 13.3-inch size is on sale for $999 on Amazon, down from the regular list price of $1,199. Alternatively, you can bump that up to $1,355 for the 750GB version, which is still $144 off its regular price of $1,499.

You can get your hands on a shiny new Sony VAIO for $200 off the regular price. This is for the Sony VAIO SE1 Series with a 15.5-inch LED-backlit display and full 1080p HD resolution.

Under the hood, you find a second-generation Intel Core i5 2.4GHz processor with Intel Turbo Boost TEchnology 2.0, This is backed by 4GB of DDR3-1333 RAM and a 640GB 5400rpm hard drive, along with graphics by the way of AMD Radeon HD 6470M, including hybrid graphics support. There are two USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, an HDMI-out port, SD card reader, Memory Stick Duo slot, and VGA output. Not surprisingly, it all comes powered by Windows 7 Home Premium. The standard battery should last 5.75 hours, which should be enough to get through a typical day of classes for most students.

The sale is only on the Jet Black version of the Sony VPCSE13FX/B, but it means that you can buy it for just $799.99 from Amazon, including free shipping. You’ll want to order it soon if you want to make sure you have it time for the start of school next month!

Running Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit with 2 GB of RAM, it's every bit a Windows machine that you are quite familiar with.

The ASUS Eee Slate EP121 is not your usual tablet with all those low-powered and low-performance ARM chips inside. Eee Slate has a mighty Intel i5 CPU inside, plus an Intel HD graphics chip to drive a beautiful and roomy 12.1″ screen that is not only capacitive, but also has a pressure-sensitive Wacom layer that takes precise input from a Wacom digitizer pen. Running Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit with 2 GB of RAM, it’s every bit a Windows machine than that one sitting on your desk. Check below for overdone marketing videos by Asus on their newly unveiled Windows tablet.

1. Stay connected to the wider world with the ASUS Eee Slate:

For regular visiting and browsing flea markets, the ASUS Eee Slate is definitely better than bulky, full-sized laptops.

2. Get creative with the ASUS Eee Slate

Artists can really gain in their creativity and productivity when using Eee Slate. What’s not to love in full Photoshop?

3. Make your business more mobile with the ASUS Eee Slate

Being mobile when running a restaurant is important. This particular restaurant also boasts a mobile kitchen on top of that, so being mobile with Eee Slate is twice important. Just don’t spill your sauces on the Slate grill.

4. My powerful work and play companion

One thing is looking for a perfect pair of shoes at the local flea market, another thing is using a tablet PC in serious business environment. ASUS Eee Pad EP121 can do both.

We knew that this day had to be coming, but we probably expected Steve Jobs to make a bigger deal of it by hosting another event in or around San Francisco. Instead, it seems that Apple has (quite quietly) updated the entire MacBook Pro line with several solid upgrades.

If you go over to the Apple online store, you’ll find that the MacBook Pro is now available with your choice of Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors. Well, that’s true of the 15-inch and 17-inch versions. The 13-inch MBP is still lacking in the Core i5/i7 department. My guess is that it, along with the regular MacBooks, will get some Core i3 treatment soon.

In terms of upgrades, the 15-inch MacBook Pro can now choose between the 2.4GHz Core i5, 2.53GHz Core i5, or 2.66GHz Core i7 processor. The 17-inch model can choose between a 2.53GHz Core i5 or a 2.66GHz Core i7, as well as an SSD at a premium.

Across the line, you’ll find a series of NVIDIA GeForce 330M discrete graphics cards (48 processing cores) with either 256MB or 512MB of memory. Each MBP is loaded with 4GB of DDR3 RAM, though you can upgrade to 8GB if you’d like too.

Prices for the newly upgraded MacBook Pros start at $1,799 and go up from there. They are all shipping now and should be in Apple stores by Friday or early next week.
