There’s a price that you pay for convenience. If law enforcement wants to peer into everything that you do on your iPhone, all they have to do is nab a copy of some off-the-shelf software from ElcomSoft. The forensics tool is able to retrieve all the data that you have backed up on iCloud.

Yes, the iCloud online backup service is convenient for you, but also means that inquiring minds can effectively gain access to a near real-time copy of all that data. This includes your email messages, call logs, website visit history, text messages, and more. Your data is automatically backed up by iCloud each time it comes in contact with a Wi-Fi access point.

Under normal circumstances, the police would need physical access to your phone in order to tap into all those records. Assuming that they have the proper warrant and everything, law enforcement can presumably get access to the associated Apple ID and password, using the ElcomSoft solution to snoop through those backups in real time. This is even better than tapping into phone calls.

We know that many of you have been waiting for a while for this moment; the Sparrow mail app is finally available for the iPhone. From now on, you will be able to enjoy a simplified way of checking your Gmail, iCloud and other accounts.

Just in case you are new to Sparrow, it is a third party email application and was a Mac-only app until now. The new mobile version comes with a range of features and, according to reports, is almost as good as the Mac version.

Sparrow for iPhone offers support for IMAP mail accounts like Gmail, iCloud, or Yahoo, but there’s no POP support. The app brings a unified inbox, and navigation is possible via swipes and gestures. The app is also coming with “smart contact list”, which will suggest possible recipients for your email (a faster way of emailing frequent contacts), the ability to attach pictures directly from within the app, and much more. But the absence of push email might be a deal-breaker for many.

And updates in the future will also bring in a built-in web browser, a landscape mode among other features. Sparrow is currently available from iTunes and it costs $2.99. The app will work on iOS devices which run iOS 5.0 and above.

We all know about that big Apple event earlier today and how it was the place where the new iPad was unveiled to the world, but there was at least one other major product reveal: the new Apple TV. While the set-top box itself is still the same inconspicuous rounded black square, its guts have been upgraded and the UI has completely changed.

The first big change with the refreshed Apple TV is the bump from 720p to 1080p full HD video support. That’s pretty significant on its own, but it’s also been updated to support video streaming from iCloud, taking in all of those movie purchases that you’ve already made. The processor inside is a single-core version of the A5.

As you can see, the interface has been updated too, taking on a little more of an iOS kind of look and feel. You can navigate through to see top movies and genres, as well as make use of that Genius functionality to find something to suit your tastes. As with the new iPad, the new Apple TV will also launch on March 16. As expected, pricing has stayed put at the usual $99.

There is no denying that physical storage is slowly but surely being relegated to the back burner in favor of cloud solutions. One of the largest mobile solutions is without a doubt Dropbox. Dropbox is far from being alone in the cloud storage market, but despite large competitors like Apple’s iCloud, the company has ove 45 million registered users, more than 1 million files saved every five minutes, and paying customers exist in over 175 countries worldwide.

The service started in 2007 and have grown considerably, the company even managed to score $250 million in funding in late October.

Now what is already a great service is getting a little better. The Dropbox Blog recently announced the arrival of its Version 2.0 of the Android app.

The newest version adds many new features to the app, including:

A “Favorites” feature that lets you star files for quick offline access.

Bulk uploading so users can select multiple photos and videos to upload in the background.

The ability to rename files and single-tap access that lets users access any file or folder with a single tap.

The app is also now optimized for ICS support and had numerous bug corrections. Dropbox currently offers 2GB of complimentary space to users or they can upgrade to a Pro account with up to 100GB of space.

If you are looking for a free alternative to get above 2GB, Dropbox does offer a few possibilities. For every friend you invite you can get get 250MB of space for free, additionally students can earn 500MB for each person they invite. Of course you will need a valid student email account and a way to confirm you are in fact a student.

Dropbox is a highly effective cloud storage tools for Android users, and 2.0 is looking even better. Users can download the app from the Android market and start inviting friends immediately to earn more space.

What’s that? You thought you had to wait for iOS 5 before you could take yourself into the aluminium unibody in the cloud? Nope. Apple has officially launched iCloud sooner than expected, granting you access right now.

As a quick refresher, iCloud gives you a suite of web apps for checking email, managing contacts and calendars, viewing documents, and finding your iPhone. The cool thing is, because it’s in the cloud, everything you do is automatically synced across other iOS devices that you have attached to the same account.

You’ll need either iOS 5 or Mac OS X Lion in order to get set up with iCloud at the moment, so if you’ve got an older version of OS X, you’ll have to sit tight until you get iOS 5 (which should be very soon, if not already). If you have Lion though, go ahead and have at ‘er. We’re hearing that it might only be allowing MobileMe migrations right now and not brand new accounts, so your experience may vary. Let us know what you think of iCloud through the comments below.

Amazon seems to always come up with something new, and in addition to its arsenal of online offerings, the company will be rolling out its WhipserSync service which is aimed to take on Apple’s iCloud.

When Amazon launched the WhisperSync with the first Kindle e-reader, it gained a big head start. WhisperSync could make a whole library in Kindle available on different devices, as well as keeping track of your books, bookmarks and notes.

Testers claim that the technology works perfectly. Its very smooth over 3G or 4G and also Wi-Fi. Amazon is really positioning itself for something big with the announcement of the Kindle Fire aside from the release of the Cloud Player and Cloud Drive. With its Android core, the Kindle Fire Tablet will incorporate an expanded version of the WhisperSync. E-book information and Kindle library are currently synced and in addition to this, WhisperSync will also keep a record of Amazon Instant Videos. In the future, do not get surprised if you learned that WhisperSync can handle any type of documents and media.

Seamless. Automatic. Dummy-proof. Easy. These are words that have largely described Apple’s MO over the last few years and the upcoming iCloud service continues with that tradition. And now Apple has formally announced a launch date of October 12.

That ties in with the release of iOS 5 and the timing is about right for the new iPhone 4S too. In case you haven’t been following along, iCloud is a free service from Apple that essentially synchronizes your content across multiple iOS devices. If you have an iPhone and an iPad, you can access your content using your existing Apple ID.

When you download or purchase new content on one iOS device, that purchase is stored in the iCloud. When you boot up your other iOS device, connect it to a Wi-Fi network, and plug it into a power source, it will get that content for you. No need for additional updates to your library. The same is true with the new Newsstand feature, which is “a new way to purchase and organize your newspaper and magazine subscriptions.”

It was a bit of a surprise today when Steve Jobs walked out on the stage at WWDC to the tune of James Brown’s ”I Got You (I Feel Good)” classic blasting over the PA system. He took a leave back in January, but that didn’t stop him from appearing today. In high spirits and receiving much appreciation from 5000 Apple devotees, jobs kicked off the event with the announcement of iCloud. A cloud-based media streaming service that allows you to access your music and data from any Apple device connected to the internet, anywhere. The service is free in beta now for up to 1000 songs, Reuters reports it will cost $24.99 a year beginning this fall for extra space.

iCloud stores your music, photos, apps, calendars, documents, and more. And wirelessly pushes them to all your devices — automatically. It’s the easiest way to manage your content. Because now you don’t have to.

Amazon and Google have their own cloud music services, but where iCloud differs and where it shines is that the software will simply scan your harddrive for your media, then give you access to it in the iCloud immediately and automatically; Google and Amazon require you to upload every song yourself.

The latest news about Apple, which coincidentally has come directly from the Apple’s mouth — this is unusual since Apple typically doesn’t talk about unreleased products — will support Twitter Pictures, a new photo-sharing service Twitter is planning to launch. In other words, iOS users will be able to load photos on Twitter directly.

There is no doubt about is, the iPhone is a great smartphone but it does have a serious downside – it’s not too good at sharing. Many other Android systems bake social networking options in every feature, while the iPhone has been rather frugal at sharing and connecting. Taking into account these details, it appears that Apple has made a wise decision when it agreed to support Twitter Pictures. Perhaps this is due to recent accounts of Windows Mango meshing social features into nearly every aspect of the OS, from contacts to communications.

iCloud is another novelty Apple is going to introduce at the upcoming WWDC 2011. The service is designed to be an iTunes music locker which will let people stream their favorite music from the cloud. The idea is not new; Google’s Music Beta and Amazon’s Cloud Drive have been offering this possibility for some time, but unlike the two companies Apple has signed licensing agreements with the major labels. No clear information is available yet as to whether iCloud will replace or supplement Apple’s MobileMe.
