In a recent press release, Chinese telecommunications company Huawei announced that they would be releasing the Ascend P1 on Amazon for customers in America. The device is being sold unlocked and works on GSM networks such as AT&T, T-Mobile and Straight Talk.

Coming in at $450 the Ascend P1 is a bit on the high end with the Nexus 4 costing $300– still, the P1 is actually available while the Nexus 4 is much harder to obtain.

From a spec point of few, it might not be a quad-core but it is still a pretty solid device:

Dual core TI OMAP 4460 1.5GHz processor

Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)

4.3″ Super AMOLED qHD 960×540 touchscreen

8MP rear camera

1.3MP front-facing camera

129mm X 64.8mm X 7.69mm

5.1 Dolby Surround Sound System

PowerVR SGX graphics chip

1GB of RAM

4GB internal storage (Up to 32GB micro SD)

1670mAh Lithium-ion battery

Coming in at just 7.69mm thin, the Huawei Ascend P1 is one of the thinnest smartphones on the market. However, the iPhone 5 just beats out the P1 at 7.6mm in depth. Additionally, with the 1.5GHz dual-core processor, the Ascend P1 will be able to handle all of the latest 3D games from Google Play.

You can check out the Huawei Ascend P1 on Amazon.

Do you think that Huawei can contend against Apple and Samsung in America? Would you buy Huawei devices if they become more widely available in the states? Let us know in the comments below.

Huawei may not be quite the same kind of household name as Samsung or Motorola, but the Chinese company has quietly been increasingly its market share by approaching more affordable alternatives to its competitors. The latest Huawei smartphone to land on our Canadian shores is the Huawei Ascend P1, an Android 4.0 device available now through Wind Mobile.

Spec for the spec, the Ascend P1 looks like it can hold its own against most higher-end Android smartphones. There’s a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, a 1.5GHz dual core processor, and a full 1GB of RAM. As an added differentiator, it also boasts a unique 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound System. Rounding out the specs are its 8MP camera with 1080p support and a thin 7.69mm profile, which is a hair thicker than the 6.68mm Ascend P1 S. I guess the S stands for super-slim.

In keeping with the budget-friendly nature of Wind, the Huawei Ascend P1 has also been priced accordingly. If you take on a $40 monthly plan, the Ascend P1 can be yours for $49 on WINDtab. If you go for the cheaper $25 plan, then the price is $199. In both cases, you can get a free pair of tickets to see The Expendables 2 in theatres when you buy this phone. I’m not sure what Huawei has to do with Sylvester Stallone, but there you go. The full press release is below.

Highly Anticipated Huawei Ascend P1 smartphone now available in Canada at WIND Mobile

It seems it is time for the ultra-thin Motorola Droid RAZR to pass on the torch for the world’s thinnest smartphone. The new Huawei Ascend P1 S pushes the boundaries of thin at just 6.68mm, versus the 7.1mm size of the Droid RAZR. The P1 S just marginally beats out the new waterproof Fujitsu Arrow, which is only 6.7mm in thickness.

From a design standpoint it looks very similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S devices, actually. As for the brand Hauwei, yes, it’s not typically pushed on larger carriers but is often found on budget networks or pay-as-you go packages.

This impossibly thin smartphone runs Android 4.0 ICS, has a 4.3-inch super AMOLED display (540×960 resolution), a 1.5GHz TI OMAP 4460 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8MG capera, a 1.3 front facing camera, HDMI out, and a 1800 maH battery.

There currently isn’t any firm information regarding release date or pricing, though it is expected to release sometime in Q2 of 2012.

We also know that the phone will come in metallic black, ceramic white and cherry blossom pink; the P1 S will also debut beside the P1, which offers the same specs but is a bit thicker at 7.69mm.
