HTC is now delivering on its promise to bring Honeycomb to the Flyer. The HTC Flyer was first released in April 2011 with Google Android 2.3.3. The Android 3.2 Honeycomb update is currently rolling out to those devices anxiously awaiting the upgrade. The update for WiFi models has begun, with 3G users getting the update early December. Some users have stated they have noticed more responsiveness and the frustrating wallpaper lag appears to be gone. However, it remains to be seen how much lag will be eliminated when using a stylus for notes and doodles on this interesting tablet. Then, Ice Cream Sandwich on other tablets pops up left and right, even if more in promises than real firmware builds.

Hopefully this is just the first update for the Flyer this year. It hasn’t been announced, but we can always hope the Flyer will receive an additional update to Ice Cream Sandwich later this year. Sure, after the first official Ice Cream Sandwich tablet Ainol Novo Basic was released in China last December, there can be little doubt that WiFi only HTC Flyer with its quite powerful hardware won’t be capable to run Ice Cream Sandwich.

The upgrade is done over-the-air through the use of 3G, and is part of a rollout strategy from HTC that begins with the 32GB WIFI/3G model.

The WIFI-only model will also receive an upgrade (eventually), although the specific launching date for this model’s update has yet to be unveiled.

While the update to 3.2 is certainly a welcome feature, we’d be even more impressed and excited if it was Android ICS that was arriving on the Flyer instead.

I also don’t know how I feel about the more expensive model getting the upgrade treatment first, since it isn’t nearly as popular sales-wise.

In the end though, it is still nice to finally see Honeycomb on the Flyer instead of the smartphone-focused Android 2.3.

Do you remember that HP TouchPad fire sale that happened a short while ago? The webOS tablet got slashed down to $99 across the board and people were scrambling to get their hands on one. Now, Best Buy went and dropped the price of the HTC Flyer Android tablet, and then renegged on it saying it’s a “pricing error.” Did they do it as a publicity stunt? Who knows, either way Tech Crunch reported on it, got a bunch of people excited and then pissed off. It was showing up as a mere $99 on the Best Buy website.

Best Buy eventually put up signs saying this price drop was an error and they won’t honor the reduced price. They’ll gladly sell you a Flyer at the full $299 price, of course, but that’s not at all the smoking $99 deal that we all want. Even so, maybe you’ll be lucky enough to find someone at your local Best Buy that will honor it… or perhaps a lawyer.

HTC isn’t one to shy away from the growing tablet market. The 7-inch HTC Flyer might be good for some folks, but what if you want a bigger screen. To compete with the Xooms of the world, we now get a look at the HTC Puccini.

The name might change, but the gist of it is that you get a Honeycomb (Android 3.0.1) on a 10.1-inch touchscreen display. It’ll probably get the upgrade to Android 3.1 eventually, but you never know with these kinds of things. We’re also hearing that it’ll ship with an AT&T-friendly LTE radio on board this June. If you like using a stylus, the Scribe Pen for the Flyer will work on the Puccini too.

We’re hearing that it’ll be a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8660 dual core processor under the hood, working alongside the WXGA resolution (1280×800) screen. How this will really differentiate itself from other Honeycomb tabs without fragmenting the Android tablet world too much really remains to be seen.

Seeing how just about everyone else is coming out with an Android tablet these days, it should really come as little surprise that HTC wanted a big slice of this pie too. And now it’s here: behold the HTC Flyer.

Rather than go with the same NVIDIA Tegra2 processor and Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS like everyone else, HTC opted for a (single core) 1.5GHz processor and Android 2.4 Gingerbread. This is a bit of an odd choice for launch, but it will make the HTC Flyer a little different from the rest.

Android Central reports this will be changed: “I can confirm we are working to bring a flyer to Honeycomb update in short order – however, I do not have any specific information on what the timing may be.”

The seven-inch 1024×600 display will be comparable to the Galaxy Tab. Other specs include the 5MP rear cam, 1.3MP front cam, microSD slot, and a super-sized version of HTC Sense UI. HTC will be customized according to each device. One interesting addition is support for the OnLive gaming platform. You’ll need an OnLive controller, but it means you can play some real games on this thing.

Running through the rest of the specs on the HTC Flyer, you can expect quad-band connectivity, 1GB RAM, 32GB storage, G-sensor, digital compass, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, WiFi-N. The 4000mAh battery might leave something to be desired, but a supersized HTC Sense could be just as good as Honeycomb… or not.

No word on pricing, availability, or carrier support.

Update: The Pen-based HTC Flyer tablet was spotted on Amazon.de for 669 Euro ($730).

With HTC SENSE™

Aluminum unibody design with touch and pen interaction make HTC Flyer unique

First tablet with HTC Watch™ video service, HTC Scribe™ Technology
and OnLive® cloud gaming

BARCELONA, SPAIN – Mobile World Congress – February 15, 2011 – HTC, a global leader in mobile innovation and design, today announced its first tablet, the HTC FlyerTM. HTC Flyer blends HTC’s trademark design language with an all-new HTC Sense user experience that has been reimagined for the tablets. Using an intuitive and innovative approach to tablets, HTC Flyer combines natural touch and pen interaction. HTC also announced HTC Watch, a new connected video service that will debut on HTC Flyer tablet, and will collaborate with OnLive, Inc. to launch the first cloud-based mobile gaming service on a tablet.

“Clearly, smartphones have transformed our lives but as we observed how people use smartphones, computers and other technologies, we saw an opportunity to create a tablet experience that is different, more personal and productive,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “We are progressing down a path as an industry when people will no longer be in a single device paradigm, but have multiple wireless devices for different needs; this is the direction we are moving.”

Encased in a sleek aluminum unibody, the HTC Flyer tablet exudes the iconic style and build quality HTC is known for. It is also ultra-light, weighing as little as a paperback book, and compact enough to fit in a jacket pocket only. With a seven-inch display, lightning fast 1.5Ghz processor and high-speed HSPA+ wireless capabilities, the HTC Flyer tablet is perfect for those who have been waiting for a tablet that is both compact and powerful.

HTC Sense for Tablet
HTC Sense revolutionized smartphones by placing the person at the center of the experience. HTC Flyer’s tablet-focused HTC Sense experience focuses on surprising and delighting people with its gorgeous 3D home screen. A unique carousel of widgets puts a user’s most important content and information at the visual center of the experience. The HTC Flyer tablet also offers uncompromised Web browsing with Flash 10 and HTML 5.

HTC Scribe Technology
Touch interaction lights up the HTC Flyer tablet experience, but it also offers a groundbreaking pen experience. With the new HTC Scribe Technology on the HTC Flyer tablet, people can rediscover the natural act of writing. HTC Scribe Technology introduces a wave of integrated digital ink innovations that make it easy and natural to take notes, sign contracts, draw pictures, or even write on a web page or photo.

HTC Scribe Technology on the HTC Flyer tablet transforms traditional note-taking into smart note-taking by integrating natural onscreen writing with thoughtful and integrated innovations. A feature called Timemark enables you to capture the audio of a meeting in line with your written notes, so tapping on a word in your notes instantly takes you to that exact place in time in the audio recording of the meeting. Notes are also integrated with the calendar so when there is an appointment reminder you are automatically prompted with an opportunity to begin a new note or in the case of recurring meetings, to continue where the last meeting left off. In an industry first, the HTC Flyer tablet also features built-in synchronization with Evernote, the world-leading notes application and service.

Streaming Mobile Movies with HTC Watch
The HTC Flyer tablet premieres HTC Watch, HTC’s new video download service. The HTC Watch service enables low-cost on-demand progressive downloading of hundreds of High-Definition movies from major studios. The intuitive, natural design of the HTC Watch service makes it easy to find the latest movie and video content, while advanced technology on the back-end enables instant playback over the HTC Flyer tablet’s high-speed wireless connection.

Mobile Cloud Gaming with OnLive
HTC takes mobile gaming to an entirely new level by being the first mobile device in the world to integrate OnLive Inc.’s revolutionary cloud-based gaming service. OnLive is leading in the home gaming market by letting people play top video games on their televisions and computers without the need to buy expensive gaming hardware or software. When integrated fully, the OnLive service will enable customers to pipe the OnLive service through the HTC Flyer tablet’s broadband wireless to their television sets, or let them play directly on the tablet.
