Are you looking for a deal for a new laptop? You don’t have to wait until Black Friday to score a new notebook at a great price, because a number of HP laptops have been slashed on Amazon for savings of up to $400.

If you have a look at the HP laptops feature page on Amazon, you’ll see that they have selected six notebooks from HP for these significant savings. For example, you can go super sleek with the HP Envy 15-3040NR 15.6-inch laptop in black and silver. It’s powered by a second generation Intel Core i7-2670QM processor and 8GB of RAM, once retailing for $1,300, but now on sale for $1,100.

Perhaps you have a smaller budget. If that’s the case, the HP Pavilion dv6-7010us has also been slashed by $200, bringing your effective price down to just $499.99. For that, you get a 15.6-inch laptop powered by an AMD Quad Core A8-4500M processor, 6GB SDRAM, and 750GB hard drive.

The biggest savings is with the HP ENVY 14-3010NR Spectre 14-Inch Ultrabook, though. That’s where you save $400 off the regular price, bringing your purchase price down to $999. Check out all of the HP laptops on sale on Amazon and take advantage of the free super saver shipping too.

Just because you want a skinny laptop doesn’t mean that you have no choice but to buy a MacBook Air. The latest PC alternative in this realm is the Samsung Series 9, joining the ranks of laptops like the Dell Adamo.

Except, I think, it looks better. I had the opportunity to see this laptop, along with the Slider PC7, in person while at CESand it’s about as skinny as it gets. Think of it as a MacBook Air, only with Windows and a black exterior. The Series 9 measures 0.64-inches at its thickest point. It’s also a hair lighter than the MBA.

I’m not completely convinced that these super thin notebooks are worth their premium, but there is a market for them. The Series 9 has a 13.3-inch HD LED backlit display (only 1366×768, though), Core i5 processor, HD GT2 integrated graphics, 1.5W subwoofer, and up to 128GB SSD and 4GB DDR3 RAM.

Pricing starts at $1,599 and goes up with upgrades. Considering that, with the exception of the SSD, you can get an equivalently equipped laptop for less than a third of that price, it’s clear that the Series 9 is a niche product.

The choices seem to come down to the MacBook Air running Mac OS X or a Samsung 9 Series with Windows 7, which one do you choose?

We’re still referring to the yet unreleased Palm tablet as the HP PalmPad, but the Opal and Topaz names have made their way onto the Internet too. The smaller of the two is the Opal with its seven-inch 1024×768 resolution TFT LCD, while the larger of the two is the Topaz with its nine-inch display of unknown resolution.

Four new tidbits about these upcoming Palm tablets have also leaked themselves onto the world wide web. First, it seems that HP is leveraging its “Beats” audio processing platform onto the PalmPad too. You might remember the Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, for example, as well as the Beats Audio on the HP Envy laptops.

Second, cloud computing is becoming quite a big buzzword (buzz term?) these days and HP is no exception to that. Instead of limiting you to the on-board storage of the Opal and Topaz, it’s being reported that the PalmPads will have “tens of gigabytes” available to them through cloud storage. This is being “offered” to tablet owners, though it’s not clear whether it’ll be “included” with the price of the device.

Third, it sounds like HP wants to do the Touchstone wireless charging thing for the PalmPad, just as you can already do with the Palm Pre smartphone. And fourth, they’re working on a “bump”-like technology for sending media and documents between tablets and phones. Just tap and go.

Considering the onslaught of Android tablets we saw at CES, HP will have lots of big shoes to fill if it wants to wow us with the PalmPad Topaz and Opal. Remember how excited people got about the first Pre? Recognize where the Pre fits into the marketplace now?

To my knowledge, HP is still the largest computer maker in the world, but it is interesting to see the company undercutting its own product. The HP Envy 15 was marketed as a premium product with premium styling, but now you can get the same style at less than half the price with the HP G62t.

The newest laptop to join the HP G-series, the HP G62t bears a striking resemblance to its much more expensive cousin, featuring the same Apple-inspired design cues. The difference is that it’s priced starting at just $599.99, rather than the $1,300+ price tag attached to the Envy 15.

Naturally, the $600 price point gets you a pretty basic configuration. You get a Core i3-330M 2.13GHz CPU, DVD burner, WiFi, webcam, 15.6″ 1366×768 LED-backlit display, three USB 2.0 ports, and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Still not a bad package for the price.

If you’re willing to shell out a little more coin, you can optionally get the HP G62t budget notebook with Bluetooth, Blu-ray drive, HDMI, and a card reader. Those last two cost an extra $25. For processors, you can bump that Core i3 to a Core i5-430M for $100 more or a Core i7-620M for $400 more.

The HP G62t is available now for your ordering pleasure.
