Myriad Alien Vue has just been announced and it effectively lets you run Android applications on your HDTV of choice, pushed through by your chosen TV service provider.

Everything has to be smarter and faster to keep up with the demands of today’s consumers, and the living room environment is no exception. Cable providers are losing out on revenue thanks to “over the top” services like Apple TV and Roku, so how do they capture it back? Myriad Alien Vue has just been announced and it effectively lets you run Android applications on your HDTV of choice, pushed through by your chosen TV service provider.

That’s important for folks like Shaw and Comcast. They can implement Myriad Alien Vue as part of their overall package, offering an integrated and unified user experience. The solution allows for support of a range of HTML5-based Android applications, plus the Google TV standard. In the brief demo video below, we are shown such apps as Twitter, YouTube, Netflix, Dropbox, and Pulse. All of these can be offered through a branded app store.

Yeah, it’s not Android Market, but the point of having that white label app store is so that the TV cable and satellite providers can capitalize on the additional income stream through apps and premium content. There’s also an accompanying app for smartphones and tablets to control the TV.

“Since launching at Mobile World Congress early this year, we have had an incredible response to our Myriad Alien Dalvik software,” said Myriad Group CEO Simon Wilkinson in a company press release. “We have shown how Android apps can work seamlessly across non-Android devices, including mobile phones, tablets and iPads, and now, with Myriad Alien Vue, we have delivered Android to another key screen in people’s lives, the TV.”

Regular old television remotes might have cut the mustard when all we had to do was adjust the volume and change the channel. These days, you want your TV to do more, so you need a remote to do more. And that’s where the TiVo Premiere app is supposed to come into play.

Offered as a free download for your iPad, this app is said to take the idea of a remote and go further. After you’ve linked your iPad with your TiVo Premiere or Premiere XL set-top box, you can control just about everything.

Yes, you can change the channel, but more importantly, you can access the full program guide, manage your recordings (both single recordings and season-long shindigs), and read up on the details of all your favorite shows. They’ve even tossed in Facebook and Twitter integration for good measure.

For my part, I think the most interesting feature is being able to review your recorded content from your iPad, remotely beginning playback at your leisure while keeping your TV showing whatever it’s showing.

The season for summer road trips may be over, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t still need some suitable entertainment on the go. Do you want to watch a DVD while driving to grandma’s for Christmas dinner? Maybe you’d prefer to watch some hockey or football? With this new combo product from Hammacher Schlemmer, you can have the best of both worlds.

About the same size as a netbook computer, the portable combination HDTV and DVD player lets you enjoy both live broadcasts and your favorite movies while on the road. The HDTV side of the equation comes from an external antenna, so you’ll only be able to pick up on the free over-the-air 720p HD signals in your area. It’ll pick up standard resolution broadcasts too.

The seven-inch TFT display offers a true HD 16:9 aspect ratio, but the resolution is a mere 480 x 234 with a 400:1 contrast ratio. In this way, the whole “HDTV” thing isn’t really all its cracked up to be.

The DVD player will handle both DVDs and CDs. There’s also a built-in memory card reader (SD/MMC/MS) for viewing photographs and videos on the go. The USB port seems like it can serve a similar function.

The kicker? The Hammacher Schlemmer portable HDTV and DVD player sells for a whopping $300. Save those pennies!

The Microsoft Zune HD went all official this week and the player itself already seems like a pretty exciting proposition. It comes with HD radio, a great touchscreen display, and a revamped user interface. However, that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Check out what happens when you connect it to your TV.

Sure, you may have seen some of those AV docks designed for the iPod and other similar devices, but they don’t really translate as well to be a portable home theatre device as the new Zune HD. With those iPod docks, you still have to look at the iPod to navigate the menu. Such is not the case here.

Instead, the entirety of the Zune HD user interface is perfectly adapted to the big screen when you slot the PMP into its media dock. You can then navigate your way through the menu using the provided remote, watching videos, listening to music, and even going to the radio stations from the comfort of your couch.

In this way, the Zune HD really has become a very versatile and multi-function device. You can carry it with you as a portable entertainment machine and then you can dock it at home as a powerful media player, not unlike the WDTV or even the Apple TV. Sort of. It’s not as zippy as a Windows Media Center HTPC, but it’s a heck of a lot more portable.

Check out the pair of videos below to get a better sense of what to expect. It looks like Microsoft could have a real winner here… until the guys in Cupertino attempt to one-up them in a few months.

The Flip Ultra and Flip Mino pocket camcorders from Pure Digital have been a real hit with folks who want an easy way to record videos. Their success has spawned a number of direct competitors, like the Creative Vado, and now we’re adding another name to the mix with the Samsung HMX-U10.

Much like other similar offerings, such as the RCA Small Wonder and Kodak Zi6, the Samsung HMX-U10 takes on a vertical configuration and can record precious video memories with the touch of a single button. It’s supposed to be as easy and straightforward as possible.

You’ll notice the prominent HD branding on this particular device. That’s because the HMX-U10 is capable of shooting video at an impressive 1920 x 1080 high-defintion resolution, outdoing the 720p that you get with something like the Flip UltraHD.

Other features on this pocket camcorder include a two-inch LCD, USB 2.0 connector, direct YouTube uploading, a seven-degree angled grip, and built-in video editing software for footage edits on the fly. No need for a computer.

Look for the Samsung HMX-U10 HD pocket camcorder to hit retailers this Septemeber with an MSRP of $199.
