Google has just released a new extension for Chrome through its Chrome Web Store. This new extension is called Google Drive. It is a tool that allows users to capture and store web based content using none other than Google Drive.

Once on a webpage you want to save, you simply click the Google Drive icon and you can copy and save the webpage, it’s HTML code or a web archive. Another cool feature is having the ability to right click on items and saving just those items to your Google Drive. After upload, Google has new scrolling, % sizing and fit to page options for viewing. You can also comment on specific areas of the pictures that you have uploaded to your Drive.

If you do a lot of snipping with Windows Snipping Tool, this is a big daddy option that provides you with the ability to do a bit more and keep it web based rather than filling your hard drive.

Can you see yourself using this extension? What are some applications that you see yourself utilizing this for?

Amid a vast sea of existing online storage options, such as Dropbox or iCloud, Google has now launched its own Google Drive storage solution. The new solution offers 5GB of free cloud-based storage and – well frankly, it seems like nothing that special. We already have so many existing options that offer basically the same experience. Like most of the competition it has a free option and many premium choices, in the Drive’s case that means you can stick with the free 5GB or move to 25 GB, 100 GB or 1 TB, for only $2.49, $4.99 and $49.00 per month, respectively.

So what can make Google Drive stand out? I’d wager that the leverage of its existing online applications, like Google Docs, could certainly help. Docs is now built right in to the Drive, letting users work easily with other people for collaboration on documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. The search by keyword options in Google Drive also seem to be fairly robust. The biggest piece of leverage it probably has going for it is Android. More than likely we will see deep integration with the drive in future revisions of Android that make Drive more appealing than current alternatives, such as DropBox.

What do you think of Google’s new “Drive”, any chance it will really give is competition a run for its money, or instead, will it fall flat? We recommend taking a look at the Verge’s comparison of existing solutions next to the Google’s service to get an even better idea of whether or not the “Drive” is the right option for you.

You can also check out Google’s own promotional video, below.

Talks about Google Drive (GDrive) first started way back in 2006 and there have been no shortage of rumors and speculations regarding the mysterious online storage service ever since. But it appears like the service is finally going to launch. According to GigaOM’s Om Malik, who got tipped off by “well placed sources”, Google Drive will arrive in the first week of April 2012.

It’s really disappointing that Google is taking so much time for launching the much anticipated service. But, as you know, the company is already into online storage via other services. You can upload documents and files to Google Docs, upload photos to Picasa, and Gmail can also be used as a storage locker. There is unlimited storage available for photos via Google+ and Google Music allows up to 20,000 song uploads.

But the problem with these services is that you won’t be able to manage all your files at one location. That is why a service such as Google Drive is much needed.

Om Malik says that Google will be offering 1GB of free online storage via GDrive, but you will be charged for more storage (Just in case you didn’t know, Dropbox currently offers 2 GB for free). GDrive will come with a local client and the interface will resemble that of Google Docs. Reportedly, the service will be available for Google Apps customers.

But Malik himself is not too confident about the new info. He says, “…the storage drive might just see the day in early April…. I say might, just because of Google’s history with the Google Drive.”

And that’s not all on Google Drive today. According to this report, Google Drive might arrive in mid April with 2GB of free storage (5GB is also a possibility).

Microsoft may be the one who keeps telling us to “go to the cloud,” but it looks like Google is the real heavyweight who wants to compete in that arena. And that’s exactly what the rumored upcoming product called Google Drive is trying to acheive.

Going directly against popular services like Dropbox and SugarSync, Google Drive is a cloud service that lets you synchronize your files across computers. This is totally up Google’s alley already, considering that all of its most popular services are already in the cloud. Do you use Gmail? Google Docs? YouTube? This is just an extension of that.

To make matters even more interesting, as with so many other Google Apps, GDrive will likely be a free offering to consumers with the possibility of a paid “premium” account for businesses. Expanding the infrastructure to support Google Drive is a walk in the park for the search engine giant. Expected features include the ability to upload media and enjoy them from any web-connected device, as well as the ability to automatically upload your photos and videos to Picasa through Instant Upload. Sounds like Dropbox’s idea, doesn’t it?

No word on a rollout date, of course, but the beta could see the light of day within the next few months.
