There was no denying that the previous Google iOS/iPad app needed a makeover, badly. Google announced today that such a makeover had finally arrived with major interface enhancements and overall better performance. The update has a much improved UI and brings several new features that make the interface more gesture-drive and visual orientated.

As an example of the new gesture-driven features, if you select a result it now slides in as a pane from the right and you can slide it back to the right to return to your search results. The iOS app certainly takes advantage of the large screen of the iPad, and looks rather good in landscape as well. Viewing image results is also more visual and gesture-based. If you tap on an image it brings up an image carousel where you can easily swipe to browse through related images.

The app also adds instant search, meaning that it starts browsing for search options even as you type out what you are looking for. This isn’t a new feature for Google and is present on the desktop, but still it’s nice to see it here as well.

The app seems like a fairly solid choice for search, especially for Google fans. Probably one of the most exciting things about this new app is that it actually works like it’s intended to. This might sound like something you should just expect out of an app already, but as Google’s Gmail app proved at it’s launch in early November, it doesn’t always work out that way.

To get a better look at Google’s iPad Search in action, check out the video below:

Do you have multiple accounts on Gmail? Well, you will no longer have to undergo some hassles when using Gmail with your mobile phone because the site now has a support system for multiple sign-ins. This means that you will never perform the cycle of logging in and out just to check your other e-mail accounts because Gmail will allow you to use several accounts simultaneously!

Gmail has been preferred by more and more users because of its large memory for storage and convenience when it comes to e-mails and other transactions. You might also have more than one Gmail account for a variety of purposes. The problem with using too many accounts is that you need to log out from one Gmail account to be able to use the other accounts, and this process can be inconvenient and time-consuming.

Well, Google has great news for for those who have multiple Gmail accounts! You will no longer have to undergo some hassles when using Gmail with your mobile phone because the site now has a support system for multiple sign-ins. This means that you will never perform the cycle of logging in and out just to check your other e-mail accounts because Gmail will allow you to use several accounts simultaneously! Isn’t that amazing?

About the Multiple Sign-In

Here are the steps to make your phone suitable for multiple sign-ins. Click on the account switcher at the bottommost part of the thread list and click “Sign into another account”. If you want to switch between accounts, you can select the desired one from the Accounts menu.

On Mobile-specific Signature

We know that autocorrect and other mobile spell-checks can be frustrating when you’re typing on the go. Let your friends know that you are responding via your mobile phone with a mobile signature, which you can create by pressing the settings icon. You need to select your preferred signature before checking the activation box. In the event that you want to disable the signature, you can do so by removing the check on the box.

The amazing Auto-Responder

Do you usually forget to set the auto-reply in Gmail before you go on a vacation somewhere? Well, there is no need to worry about that because now, you can set the auto-reply feature using your cell phone. Choose the start and end date, then write your message. It is similar to using the desktop or laptop, so you won’t have a difficult time doing this.

URLs are also updated as part of the multiple sign-in support to enable each Gmail account to have a separate bookmark. If you have already bookmarked Gmail for Mobile on your phone, update it now. Go to the website in order to make use of all the new features.

Google’s latest Android version 3.0, Honeycomb just got a bit sweeter with the release of a teaser video. Google is showing Honeycomb at CES, and it appeared first on the Motorola XOOM Android tablet. Google touts Honeycomb as being the first Android OS designed “Entirely for Tablets.” This is going to give Apple a run for their money, directly tapping users into the complete portfolio of Google tools right on their laps done the Google way. Their not just changing computers, their changing the way we use them too. The UI is quick and flawless in the video, the apps are pretty slick too. GMail is optimized for viewing emails; similar to the iPads. YouTube gets a new interface for watching and finding videos. Google Talk users can facetime chat with one another, the mapping is quite pretty thanks to the Nvidia graphics chipset and 3d mapping is taken to the max. Check out the video, it’s the best of what’s to come.

Going forward with Android and Gmail individually, the Gmail team today released a new version for the Android Market. It will give you priority inbox, important message stickies, a “show quoted text” button, and the floating message action toolbar just like your regular Gmail browser.

Gmail updates will no longer be tied to specific Android versions, and anyone with Froyo (Android 2.2) can get the new app. Check Google’s blog post for more details and a download link.

I’ve been using my Nokia E71 smartphone for several months now and I’m quite pleased with what this little phone can do. I’m also very happy to have found Google Sync, which allows me to synchronize the calendar and contacts on my phone with their equivalents through the Google suite of services. Well, that suite just got a little sweeter with the addition of Gmail Push.

You will still use the same Google Sync functionality as before, which you can find out more about through google.com/sync, but now they’ve extended beyond calendar and contacts to include push Gmail service. This is not only for my Symbian-based phone too, since they’re doing it for all the iPhone and Windows Mobile too.

In order to get Google Sync to work on your Symbian smartphone, you must first get Microsoft Exchange installed on your phone. It’s also notable that it will only work with a single account, so if you have one for personal and one for business, you’ll have to choose which is more important to you. For instance, Sync will only work with your personal Google Calendar and with any additional calendars you may create within Google Calendar.

Up until now, iPhone owners who were using the built-in Gmail functionality on their devices had to manually pull messages from the servers. With the introduction of push, you can get notified in real time when you receive a new email. This brings the iPhone (as well as WM and Symbian) up to par with the Palm Pre and Android in terms of Gmail Push service.

Yes, there have been some third-party workarounds that tried to provide similar functionality, but now you can get the real deal from Google if not from Apple.

I think that most of us would agree that the BlackBerry is probably one of the better platforms when it comes to mobile email management, but what if you do everything through Gmail? You want the same functionality as the online desktop, right? Research in Motion thinks so too.

RIM has already done a fantastic job with managing enterprise-level email, but it’s not quite as robust when it comes to Gmail. That may soon change, as the Waterloo-based company is working on an “Enhanced Gmail Plugin” that brings in many familiar features.

With this new plugin, your BlackBerry will be able to display Gmail-based emails in Conversation View, threading those message just like how they appear on the Gmail website. Further still, you can manage labels and stars that are attached to email messages.

Other notable highlights include the ability to archive your email, mark messages as spam, and search your entire Gmail inbox. I would assume that the Enhanced Gmail Plugin will be free too, so we’ll just have to sit tight until RIM is ready to release it.
