If you’re in the market for the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, and you happen to be in Asia, you might be lucky enough to be getting Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean ahead of other Mini owners.

In fact those of you States side won’t have the chance to buy the S3 Mini in stores due to the recent deal struck with Apple to drop a lawsuit scheduled to go to court in 2014.

Android 4.1.2 on the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini comes with Premium Suite, which includes tons of great features such as Page Buddy, Multi Window, Paper Artist, Group Cast, Smart Rotation and a customisable notification panel. It’s nice to see an upgrade so soon, considering the phone just launched last month with Android 4.1.1.

So with the Galaxy S3 Mini banned in the U.S, is anyone planning on importing the tiny Samsung smartphone from Asia for some Android 4.1.2 awesomeness?

The Samsung Galaxy S III Mini was announced last month, but Samsung didn’t make it clear whether the smaller cousin of the full-size S3 would be made available for the US market. That answer has now been provided courtesy of Amazon, because the online retailer has listed the Samsung smartphone.

The idea with the S3 Mini, in case you’re not so familiar, is to take the form factor of the S3, shrink it down, and reduce the specs for a reduced price. The net result is a Google Android 4.1 smartphone with a 4.0-inch Super AMOLED display, dual core 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 8/16GB storage and microSD expansion. There’s a 5-megapixel camera on the back and a VGA camera on the front. Realistically, the specs make it sound like an S II in a shrunken down S III body.

Now, it’s debatable whether the unlocked Galaxy S III Mini is worth it. You’ll find it listed on Amazon.com for $398.91 with 8GB of memory. By comparison, the equally unlocked but vanilla Android-powered 8GB Google Nexus 4 by LG is $100 less than that. Maybe you like TouchWiz and don’t want to try finding (or pay for) an unlocked S3. If that’s the case, the S3 Mini isn’t so shabby.

Samsung has recently sent out a (German) press invite for an event on October 11th. What is the event all about? Rumors suggest it might be the announcement of a smaller version of the Galaxy S3. The invite continues the Samsung tradition of hinting at what they might be announcing in order to drive more speculation and excitment. This time the tagline is, “So big can be small. And so small can be big”. The backgroudn also has a big S logo.

A smaller version of the S3 could certainly be good idea. While some users like bigger phones, others prefer devices in the 4 to 4.5-inch range- Galaxy S3 is 4.8-inches. This is pocketable, but it is still a little big and certainly won’t fit comfortably in all types of pant pockets, like tighter jeans for example.

A Galaxy S3 with a smaller size would also give a more ‘direct’ iPhone 5 competitor. While many iPhone users are very loyal and wouldn’t consider a Samsung alternative, a mini Galaxy S3 might appeal to those users that are on the fence. Especially since the Galaxy S3 it doesn’t have all of the all the map, Wi-Fi and scuffing problems that come with Apple’s newest smartphone offering.

What do you think? Would you consider a smaller Galaxy S3 over the iPhone 5?
