I thought the vanilla version of the Samsung Galaxy S II was already pretty incredible, but it looks like things just got a little faster and a little bigger. Improving on the original SGS2 is the upgraded Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket, an Android smartphone bound for AT&T’s recently expanded LTE network.

The addition of LTE is likely the biggest upgrade that you’ll notice on the slightly altered version of the SGS2. Beyond the compatibility with AT&T’s LTE network, the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket also comes with an upgraded processor. The original 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos was already impressive, but this phone gets a 1.5GHz dual-core processor instead. The screen has also grown to a 4.5-inch (800×480) Super AMOLED Plus display.

Many of the other standard features make their encore appearance, including the great 8MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, and 16GB of internal storage. There’s the microSD slot and it’ll ship with the newer Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread operating system. Sign up for a two-year prison term LTE service agreement with AT&T and you can get the Skyrocket for $249.

Ford is thinking ahead and is starting to incorporate new ideas on how to merge transportation with communication tools. Ford launched the Evos concept which has already wowed people all over the world. However, the slinkiest hybrid so far only has two wheels – this concept bicycle from Ford is called the E-Bike Concept. The bike has an electronic motor which is built into the front wheel. It can generate a speed of 25 km/h with a 9.2 Ah battery. If you still want ride your bike the conventional way, you can power the bike by pedaling, with the torque connected to the rear wheel over a carbon belt.

On the handlebars, something special is attached. Lo and behold—it’s a Galaxy S 2 smartphone. This means riders will be able to change suspension modes through some custom software. You can also monitor battery charge and activate Google Navigation. The key word here is “concept.” Stay tuned for further developments regarding this Ford project.

South Korea-based Samsung may have overtaken Apple in smartphone sales last quarter, according to Strategy Analytics in a recent interview with Bloomberg.

Since the release of the Galaxy S II in May, Samsung is estimated to have sold between 18 and 21 million smartphones globally, compared to Apple’s 20.3 million iPhones, the report says.

“Including basic phones, Samsung will probably have a 20 percent share this year, compared with Nokia’s 26 percent,” writes Bloomberg, “closing the gap between the world’s two largest handset makers to the narrowest ever.”

While this has brought Samsung’s overall mobile phone market share closer to Nokia than ever, estimated at 20 and 26 per cent respectively, consensus seems to be that Apple’s September update to the iPhone may be able to rattle the numbers again before next quarter. By April, Apple had passed Nokia’s 20 per cent market share, sitting with a hefty 21.

Aside from strong Android-based phone sales, Samsung is maintaining its status as the world’s largest manufacturer of televisions, as well as trying to break further into the lower-end smartphone market with phones running its own Bada software rather than Android OS.

But as Samsung tries to break into developing markets such as China, India and Brazil, Apple is rumored to have its own lower-end iPhone set for release in the near future, too. What’s more, the California company has altered its next iPhone and iPad update, iOS 5, to abolish the need for a home computer to set up and sync its mobile devices. The move, said Steve Jobs during the unveiling of iOS 5, springs from the desire to move into markets where people simply don’t all have their own PC.

Due to these and other factors, Apple and Samsung may be locked into a head-to-head sales war for the next several quarters. We’ll just have to wait and see who comes out on top.
