There’s a reason why the Samsung Galaxy S3 is widely touted as being one of the best Android smartphones on the market today and now it seems that you can land yourself a stellar deal on the phone too. It’s on sale for just a penny.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is being offered in white or black with 16GB of internal storage, coming with all those wonderful specs and features that make this phone so popular. There’s the 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED touchscreen, dual core 1.5GHz processor, 8MP camera, and full 1080p HD video recording. It ships with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but a Jelly Bean update is surely on the way.

You can pick it up for $0.01 on a qualifying two-year service agreement with Sprint via Amazon Wireless. That’s pretty cheap, considering that it sells for $700 outright. If you want something even larger and more powerful, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is on sale too, also through Sprint and Amazon Wireless. That’s being listed at $169.99 on a qualifying two-year contract.

Yes, I know that you can head on over to your wireless provider of choice and get a new smartphone for a reduced price when you sign on with a contract, but that’s just not suitable for some people. Some people prefer to have their phones unsubsidized and out of contractual obligations, so if you want a unlocked Galaxy Note 2, this is the deal for you.

As a quick refresher, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 features a great 5.55″ high resolution Super AMOLED display, quad core 1.6GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB storage, microSD expansion up to 64GB, 8MP camera with 1080p video recording, and that S Pen stylus that makes the “Note” series.

The unlocked version on sale here is the N7100. What this means is that it has quad-band GSM and quad-band HSDPA 850/900/1900/2100. Given this, it should be fully compatible with AT&T in the United States, as well as Rogers, Bell and Telus in Canada, among several other carriers around the world. The 3G will not work, though, with T-Mobile, Wind or Mobilicity.

The factory unlocked Galaxy Note 2 is on sale for $645 on Amazon, which is $355 (35%) off the list price of $999.99. You gotta pay for this kind of power, right!

Who said there was no market for a supersized phablet? There’s a reason why every other cell phone company seems to be jumping onto the 5+ inch bandwagon, because Samsung has just announced that the Galaxy Note 2 has exceeded five million units in worldwide sales.

Remember that the 5.5-inch successor to the original Galaxy Note only launched a mere two months ago. In its first month, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 broke the three million mark in sales and, less than a month later, it has added another two million to that count. Maybe people really do like that S Pen, it seems. It also helps that the Note 2 is available in everywhere from Korea to Europe, Middle East to Latin America. The device also has solid specs overall and reasonably attractive styling.

To be fair, while selling five million units is no small feat, it still pales in comparison to the flagship Galaxy S3. Yes, the Galaxy S3 has been out for longer, but earlier this month, that Android superphone broke the 30 million mark. Whatever the case, the trend is clearly moving toward larger Android smartphones. We’ve got the HTC Deluxe (Droid DNA with Verizon) on the way, after all, and it certainly won’t be alone moving forward.

Do you prefer a larger phone like the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 or do you prefer something with a slightly smaller display and overall size?

Amazon is now offering the Note 2 for $50 cheaper than usual, with a two year commitment to AT&T. Interestingly enough, Amazon seems to be the only one on board with the new $250 price point. All other carriers, including AT&T itself, are stilling offering the Samsung phablet for $300 plus a two-year contract. While just about everyone reading this probably already knows what to expect with the Note 2, as a refresher will do a quick summary of the key specs. The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has a 5.5-inch super AMOLED HD display, a quad-core Exynos processor, 16GB of internal storage and a stylus called the S-Pen. As for the OS, you get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. So how about it, does the idea of saving $50 on the purchase of the AT&T version of the Galaxy Note 2 sound appealing to you or not? [ source ]

When the first Samsung Galaxy Note was released last year, I had visions of the old Dell Streak and I wondered why on Earth someone would want a smartphone with a display in excess of five inches. Well, it turns out that the original Note has been quite the resounding success and Samsung followed up with the Note II. But what’s different between the two? How much of an upgrade is it?

It starts with the screen. The original Note had a 5.3-inch 800×1280 (285ppi) Sumer AMOLED touchscreen, whereas the new Note II has a larger 5.5-inch 720×1280 display. It’s physically bigger but actually has fewer pixels (267ppi). This is because they’ve changed the aspect ratio, which changes the outward dimensions of the phone too. The new Note II is a little longer than the original (151.1mm vs 146.9mm), but it’s actually narrower (80.5mm vs 83mm) and thinner (9.4mm vs 9.7mm).

The overall design borrows a lot from the Galaxy S III too, so you lose the textured back of the Galaxy Note in favor of a slippery “river rock” like back on the Note II.

The new Note II is more powerful with a quad-core 1.6GHz processor compared to the 1.4GHz dual core in the original, though it retains the same 2GB of RAM. The Note II ships with Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, whereas the original shipped with Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, though a Jelly Bean upgrade is available. Naturally, they both use Samsung’s TouchWiz UI too.

The S Pen smart stylus is still here–as will be the case with the entire Note lineup–but it’s gained a few tricks, like Wacom-style “hovering” functionality. The Note II does have some additional features though, like a custom menu for one-handed operation of the dial pad, as well as some features borrowed from the S3, like Smart Stay. The battery is bigger (3100mAh vs 2500mAh) too, helping to improve battery life.

If you already have the original Samsung Galaxy Note, there isn’t as much of a motivation to upgrade to the Note II. However, if you’re looking to enter the phablet arena for the first time, I’d skip the OG Note and head straight to the Galaxy Note II. It’s a beast of a device.
