Despite the departure of the brand that started it all, pocket camcorders are still going to stick around for a little while longer. Challenging other waterproof competitors like the Kodak PlaySport is the new Toshiba Camileo BW10.

Not surprisingly, this pocket camcorder comes in a somewhat ruggedized and rubberized housing to go along with its waterproof claims. You won’t be going deep sea diving with this, though, as the 6.5 feet depth limit is likely more in tune with snorkeling at best. If you want to go deeper, they’ve got more expensive models.

Unlike any of the Flip camcorders to ever hit the market, the Toshiba Camileo BW10 shoots video at up to 1080p and it’ll also take five-megapixel stills in a pinch. Wrapping up the spec sheet are the SD card slot, USB port (no swing out connector here!), and HDMI output.

Pick it up in a sporty yellow (I’m reminded of the old Sony Sports Walkman) or sexy silver for $150, minus a $20 instant rebate via Toshiba’s official site.

From Yanko Design comes another surprisingly creative concept smartphone, the Flip. And, true to its name, it is a flip phone… but not in the sense you would imagine.

The Flip has three full-sized Super AMOLED touchscreens and a full QWERTY keyboard on three panels attached by steel mesh hinges. This allows for a book-like view across two of the screens; a texting or writing view with the keyboard, camera and one touch screen exposed; or a triangle prism view.

It’s the prism view that really makes the phone unique in the purest sense of the word. It’s shown in the video used as a Rolodex-like way to scroll through lists, by two people on opposite sides of a table watching video on two of the screens, and as a make-shift vase. It’s a never-before-seen concept of form for potential smartphones.

And it’s absolutely as cutting-edge functional as it is gorgeous, with a custom Android OS used in inventive ways that you have to see to truly appreciate.

If no cell phone manufacturers pick up on this this concept, we now know exactly what we’re missing out on.

It’s not a ride at Six Flags, it’s the FLIP (Floating Instrument Platform), a research vessel built in 1962 that does exactly what its names implies. After being towed to a target site in a horizontal, normal ship position, the FLIP rotates a full 90 degrees sending 300 of its 350 feet vertically under the water. By anchoring itself in calm waters below, the boat provides a portable platform where researchers can record precise measurements in up to 30 foot waves. Scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography actually manage to live and work on the FLIP for weeks at a time conducting oceanic studies. Talk about a work environment that flips you out!

It made video recording so accessible to everyone, since all you had to do was point and click that big red button. The Flip line expanded again today with the Flip SlideHD camcorder.

Cisco Flip Slide HD Revealed

While all the other pocket camcorders in this line have offered the same basic form factor up until now, the Flip SlideHD is dramatically different. It’s not just a regular old candybar, because it actually slides up… sort of like an HTC Tilt smartphone.

The other vital difference is that Cisco has enlarged the display dramatically. Instead of that tiny little window that you got on the Flip UltraHD and Flip MinoHD, you get a big three-inch display. Underneath that is a capacitive touch navigation bar. All the regular buttons are now replaced by on-screen controls instead.

The rest of the specs are quite similar to existing models, shooting 720p videos and saving them onto the 16GB of internal memory. That should be enough space for about four hours of video. You still get HDMI output, but they’ve also added a headphone jack for private listening.

The Flip SlideHD is available now for $280.
