Research in Motion is really starting to dabble into other “unconventional” form factors for the BlackBerry line. The Storm was the first touchscreen. The Torch the first slider. And the Style could be the first QWERTY flip phone.

You may have already seen the BlackBerry 9670, mostly as rumor and hearsay, but it seems that the model number is no longer enough. That’s why we hear about Pearls, Curves, Bolds, and so on. We fully expected a “name” to go with the BlackBerry 9670, but Style? Well, that’s the word that’s currently making its way around the Internet today. This isn’t the first time that RIM has had a flip phone — you might remember the Pearl Flip — but the BlackBerry Style will be the first flip with full QWERTY. Maybe Curve Flip may have been more appropriate.

In any case, the BlackBerry 9670 Style will be a CDMA device and it appears to be running BB OS 6 right out of the box.

Toshiba Light Pool phone with 22 triangular LEDs

When things blink and flash they are cool, when they are in a particular sequence with multiple colors and sound, they are rad. You could say the same for the KDDI Light Pool clamshell phone. On the outside, you’ll see a total of twenty-two LEDs in the shape of triangular windows arranged in a criss-crossing grid-like pattern. These LEDs are meant to display a touch of personality, lighting up in 100 different patterns sequenced with music. Patterns can indicate an incoming call, email, or whatever you prefer.  The lights and sounds “rongupureimodo” were created by filmmaker Masakatsu Takagi.

Going through the specs and feature set, however, you’ll find that this phone isn’t exactly anything to write home about. The Light Pool has a 3.2-inch VGA TFT display, 8MP autofocus, Bluetooth, GPS, and a microSDHC expansion slot.  Expect Toshiba handset to launch with KDDI at the end of this month in your choice of pink, black, or white.

It’s not available quite yet, but the Nokia 2720 Fold has made its first official appearance on the Fido website. You won’t find it in the official stable just yet, but it is being promoted on the front page as a phone that is “coming soon.”

The Nokia 2720 Fold is meant to be a stylish and simple flip phone for people who just want a phone. You get some basic features though, including a 1.3 megapixel camera (with video), FM radio with RDS, Bluetooth, and an MP3 player.

Expect the Nokia 2720 Fold to sell for $125 outright. If you prefer to take on a new two-year contract, Fido will hook you up with the 2720 for free.
