When it comes to mobile games, you get what you pay for. While many great games are only a few dollars, if you want a truly detailed and engrossing mobile experience, you generally have to pay quite a bit more.

Case and point: Square Enix makes great RPGs, but they also are pretty much the most expensive games you will find via the Google Play Store. Many of these games are actually just remixes from the SNES and Playstation era, but Square has done an excellent job optimizing these games for touch controls.

Want to play some of these classics but don’t want to spend a fortune to do it? Square Enix is slashing prices for a limited time holiday sale.

So what kind of deals we are talking about here? Classics like Final Fantasy I and Chrono Trigger are just $4.99 and $6.99 respectively. Chrono Trigger is one of the greatest video games of all time, and $6.99 is certainly a reasonable asking price.

You can also find more modern games like Chaos Rings and Chaos Rings Omega for $3.99.

Crystal Defenders is also priced at just $3.99, while Countastic and Dragon Quest Slime live wallpapers are both just $1 each.

If interested, you should hurry now as the promotion ends on January 3rd.

When I first heard about the Ouya I have to admit I had pretty mixed opinions, I mean $100 for a console? Android based with free games? The idea sounded cool but I immediately felt that such a system would pretty much be relegated to very low-end freebie games from small indie developers and would quickly drop into obscurity. Fast forwarding to today, the tech and gaming community have spoken up and proclaimed the Ouya is something they are interested in as the Kickerstarter funding has now reached over $6 million, six times what the company was originally trying to generate from their funding campaign.

In order to end its Kickstarter campaign with a bang, the Ouya is now adding a special limited edition brown, brushed metal version that will only cost a pledge of $140 from now going forward to the campaign’s end on August 9th.

With all this funding, the big question is who the Ouya is for exactly? With partnerships with Square Enix, the music video hub service Vevo, and it’s overall open-nature, the Ouya seems to be the perfect device for those who are looking for a living room entertainment and multimedia device that can also play some great indie games along the way. I wouldn’t expect any major AAA exclusives from the big studios, but with Final Fantasy 3 coming, it’s clear that even big studios are getting behind the Ouya for their smaller projects and re-releases of older games. The Ouya ISN’T meant as a competitor for the traditional gaming consoles from Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a place among techie and gaming enthusiasts.

Are you planning to get your hands on an Ouya? What do you think of the console so far?

A low-cost Android-based gaming system with modest specs and an open-source design, who would want that? Apparently a lot of people, as evidenced by the $5,820,345 invested into the Android-based Ouya console through Kickstarter. Despite early investing interest by consumers, what will really help Ouya set itself apart will be whether or not it has any interesting or unique games for it. It’s equally important for the brand to attract big names in the industry, something that they’ve apparently done with the recent announcement that Final Fantasy III will be a launch title for the Ouya.

The company has partnered with Square Enix to bring content to the Ouya and the first fruits of their partnership will be the release of a version of FF III. The bad news is that they don’t really say what version, the new 3D version for iOS and Android? The original with minor updates? A completely exclusive re-make? More than likely I’d say the 3D version already found on Android and iOS makes the most sense, especially since Ouya does promise FF III will be “updated to exploit OUYA’s high-definition resolution in glorious graphic detail.

Ouya promises a console that offers all games for free, or at the very least requires a demo or fremium version for all games. This means that at least some part of Final Fantasy III will be free to play. While this is exciting and everything, an exclusive FF game, even if it was a mini-game, or a remake of something like FF VII would be even more epic, but it’s a start. Hopefully this is the beginning of a huge revolution in the support of open gaming platforms, but only time will tell for sure.
