How can a Chinese phone manufacturer produce a clone of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 when it hasn’t been launched yet? In fact is this quad-core, 5.5-inch phablet even really a knock-off in that case? These a questions we don’t know the answers to but at least we know the specs.

Under the decidedly Samsung styled exterior, and behind the 720HD 5.7-inch IPS display sits a Mediatek quad-core MT6589 CPU, 1GB RAM, 8GB ROM, SD card reader and dual-sim support. The camera hardware is pretty impressive too, with a rear 8 mega-pixel sensor taking up the main camera duties, and a 5 mega-pixel sensor on “duck-face” watch.

The name of the device is shamelessly called the “Note 3″. Despite the name, it is probably fair to say that this Chinese clone actually looks more like a Note 2 (albeit with a slightly larger display) than anything. Either way, it is impressive how close they came to mimicking Samsung’s overall design style. What do you think of this clone?

Remember those good old school days? Remember the crafts we used to do, including the strategic designing of paper airplanes. The wings had to be just right, and we would try so many different styles to beat our friends. Well, there’s still a little kid in all of us that’s for sure, some more than others, and that’s why the giant paper airplane flew over the Arizona desert this week. The thing weighs in at 800 pounds, is 45 feet long, and has a wingspan of 24 feet. It was launched by the Pima Air & Space Museum. The design of the airplane was inspired by 12-year-old Tucson resident Arturo Valdenegro, who won the paper airplane distance contest held at the museum earlier this year. That’s why it was named Arturo’s Desert Eagle. As he was the winner, Valdenegro got a chance to meet the aviation experts who worked for making the big airplane a reality.

The airplane was hoisted into the air by a helicopter and it flew from an altitude of 2,703 feet. It reached a speed of 98 miles per hour before returning to Earth. Check out the video to see the first flight.

Reports about a man flapping his engineered wings and flying are circulating all over the internet. Although there have been mixed reactions from experts around the world, many strongly believed that the video involved was not a fake, probably because everyone loves the idea of flapping their wings and flying to the office or the park. But it appears like the whole thing was without a doubt, a pretty good fake.

Gizmodo got in touch with some of the experts in the field of CGI and here are some of the reactions they got:

“Okay, so I don’t see any glaring visual problems, but that’s expected when the quality is as shitty as this. But that’s the first thing that makes me question its authenticity. They’re able to afford to build this thing, but can’t invest in proper video equipment, or… a tripod. If I were to make a fake video with the intention of going viral, I would make certain that the quality was as poor as possible to disguise any flaws in poor cg work. Another big visual issue I have with this video is the stability of his head during flight. Try and keep your head that still while waving your arms up and down when they aren’t attached to a giant wing contraption”.

“The camera seems very strange. I know that when I am flying in an airplane, I don’t look straight ahead all of the time. Also, the only way people have been able to propel themselves above the ground have been by bicycle arrangements to power a fixed-wing aircraft. A human powered helicopter managed 10 seconds of flight about 5 inches above the ground. The legs are much more powerful than the arms. I have serious doubts about it just on the physics and physiology points alone“.

“Bad physics, shaky cam with bad focus (always a giveaway) and the most steady head I’ve ever seen on a guy flapping his arms in order to not break every bone in his body. FAKE“.

“I have to wonder where the power is coming from (where are the batteries, etc). The most efficient for human transportation appears to be a fixed wing aircraft. You can get very good results from a good laminar wingform and a low power engine/motor. His wings will definitely not provide the aerodynamics to haul a 180 pounds in the air. The largest bird had a 23 foot wingspan, and was only 171 pounds. It also had very large pectoral muscles to handle the power needed”.

Check out one of their other videos below, this was a “test flight attempt” which obviously did not result in a flight. After 1:50, you will clearly see that the wing is CG. And of course, the whole shooting the grass to switch between CG and Real is a dead giveaway. The dynamics of the guy running don’t even look real to be honest. Have a watch below and you can see how fake these guys are.

But although it’s a fake, it definitely is a pretty impressive one. The CGI masterminds who gave out their comments were certainly impressed. As one guy says, “I take my hat off to these artists for their commitment to this project, creating and releasing so many videos with convincing graphics that have fooled a LOT of people. It’s the perfect PR for a visual effects studio. Wish I’d thought of it”.

The Apple iPhone 5 is certainly a much anticipated device, and so is the Samsung Galaxy S 3. We have already heard a lot of rumors regarding the upcoming Android handset and what you see above is thought to have come from a public relations PowerPoint file. Is that really the S3 we have been waiting for all this time? We believe it is most probably not.

The new leak suggests that Samsung is planning a Samsung Unpacked event in London on May 22nd at which the Galaxy S 3 will be introduced. There is nothing unbelievable about that since the “unpacked” events have become a tradition and also a European launch is probable as they went with that for the S2. London is a good place to introduce the handset as the Summer Olympic Games is going to happen there. But all the other details available suggest that we might be looking at the work of a good artist who loves working on fake images. As you can see above, Weber Shandwick, which is a PR agency, has their logo on the powerpoint. We’re not sure if PR companies usually do that. The other tip off, that dedicated home button is all too apple-esque.

The S3 appears to be extremely thin, measuring in at 7.89mm (possible, but still sounds fake). And it isn’t very unlikely that Samsung would design a white device with a black ring around it. The S 3 will probably come without a Home Button, similar to the Galaxy Nexus, which is a design that we also are expecting from Samsung. So the conclusion is that the new leak has come out with a lot of inconsistencies, so it is most probably a big giant fake.

But that date really sounds sweet. As for the specs, rumors so far are suggesting a 1.5GHz quad-core Samsung Exynos processor, a 4.8 inch “full HD” 1080p resolution display, 4G LTE support, Android ICS, and an 8-megapixel rear cam.

Stay tuned for updates.

While we suspected the video of French director François Vogel having eyelid spasms while testing out a glasses-free 3D technology was a hoax, I asked an optometrist to tell me how much legitimacy the video had and here is what Jean-Marie Hanssens, who uses 3D to test binocular vision, had to say; “Blinking as fast as in the web video can generate various eye problems such as dry eye, corneal and lid irritations, lid spasms.”

Before even knowing how ridiculous and harmful this technology could be, I emailed the address at the mysterious Jonathan Post website that contained little more than the video. Almost a month after I sent the email I received a reply from Luis Carone with a link to a new video for the “making of” the glasses-free 3D video.

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s an absolute fake. The hoax was conducted by Luis Carone and managed by Daniel Dias. Jonathan Post is a small post production company based in São Paulo. Carone and Dias persuaded Francois Vogel to act as the test subject, because of his “accent and scientist face.”

The original internet hoax that we reported on back in January has reached over 5 million views on YouTube in such a short time.

In the making of video, Carone said his company envisioned a device that simulated 3D shutter glasses. The only problem was they didn’t know how to create that device. So his team put together some electrodes and created a 3D face using image photometry software. They tracked Vogel’s face movements and projected the film onto his face and it gave a steady image. This was followed by digital compositing to give the effect of Vogel’s crazed eye blinking.

Watch the making of video where Carone explains, “For everyone who said it was fake, it was only a joke.”

The 200-member L.A. Port Police force’s most recent investigation led to the seizure of more than $10 million of counterfeit Apple products and other electronics in a warehousing operation in downtown Los Angeles over the weekend.

The goods were shipped over as parts from Asia to be reassembled and labelled in L.A. before being sold in order to obscure the operation. Laid out on a table in typical drug-bust style, a Los Angeles Times photo shows piles upon piles of the PSPs, third- and fourth-gen Nanos and other goods set to be displayed in a press conference Monday.

“This was a well-funded operation,” said Ron Boyd, chief of the L.A. Port Police force. ”The counterfeits looked very authentic.”

Though they were deceiving to the eye, the iPods and iPhones, many of older generations, don’t work when hooked up to iTunes, he said. Investigators assume the recent shipment was timed to coincide with lingering electronics hype brought on by the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

The investigation also involved the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement office, the Border Enforcement Security Task Force, the California Highway Patrol’s Cargo Theft Interdiction Program and the Vernon Police Department.

This sort of thing is pretty commonplace in other countries — the word “Molino” comes to mind — so it’s good to see the integrity of the world’s most trusted industry defended in the U.S.A.
