Excitement has been stirring in Europe since the announcement of the the 5 inch 1080p HTC Butterfly. So much so that UK Expansys started offering up the Butterfly for preorder in the UK. One site, Coolsmartphone, decided to get in on the preorder action.

While Coolsmartphone was not told a date of availability or even a price for that matter, it was a shot in the dark that the site was willing to take. This last weekend they received an email from Expansys explaining they would not be receiving the device in the UK:

Thank you for your recent interest and preorder of the HTC Butterfly. Unfortunately, we have now been informed by HTC that this device will not be available in European markets, and as such we have had to remove it from our website and cancel your preorder.

It certainly seems like a strange move to leave the Butterfly out of the European market when they brought it to the US already as the HTC Droid DNA.

At this point, all Europe can do is hope that it is still coming perhaps using yet another different name. Did you have your sights set on the Butterfly? What phone will you get instead?

This amazing Android superphone started its life as a Japan-exclusive, going by the name of the HTC J Butterfly. It then flew across the Pacific, landing at Verizon Wireless and becoming the HTC Droid DNA. And now, it looks like the 1080p superphone is now flying across the Atlantic to the UK, as Expansys is now accepting pre-orders for the HTC Butterfly.

The three variations of this device are fundamentally the same, aside from their respective names and some slight differences in the wireless radios. The HTC Butterfly is the international variant that should be the most compatible with the most wireless networks around the world, so even if you’re not in the UK, this is great news if you’re a fan of high-powered gadgetry.

As a quick refresher, the HTC Butterfly comes with a 5-inch display boasting an impressive 1920×1080 pixel resolution. It will ship with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and feature the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 8MP main camera, and 2.1MP front camera. The listing on Expansys UK doesn’t have pricing information yet, so you will be placing that pre-order a little on the blind side.

Maybe it’s for the best. Samsung has a habit of releasing a new “flagship smartphone” every few months, but that apparently won’t happen with the latest pure Google experience. The Galaxy Nexus superphone was reportedly set to get an updated version from Samsung that would boost its internal storage to 32GB, but those plans have apparently been thrown out the window.

According to Expansys, Samsung has indicated that it has cancelled production of the new handset. This comes by way of a post in the XDA-Dev forums, saying that this is “not good news at all.”

Realistically, I don’t think too many people will care. Most of the reviews for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus have been positive, including BGR’s review saying it is their “favorite Android device in the world.” With that crazy Super AMOLED 720p display and Ice Cream Sandwich under the hood, what’s not to like? You know, aside from having “just” 16GB of internal storage. You’d think they would have learned from the Nexus S and put a microSD card slot in there, huh?

The latest manufacturer to join forces with Google’s Android OS is Acer and their newest smartphone, the Stream. Unlike so many of its counterparts, its exclusivity isn’t with a specific carrier; it’s with a store. I thought this was a bit of an odd move, but it seems that online store Expansys UK will be the only place you can buy the Acer Stream Android phone when it launches on August 9th. Want a carrier subsidy? You’ll need to look for a different phone, as this one is taking on a Nexus One approach.

Expansys will be selling the Stream at full clip, asking for a cool 399 GBP. That works out to about $600 or so in Americanos. The exclusivity could be lifted at some point, but there is currently no indication as to when (and if) that’s going to happen. The Acer Stream will be rolling with Android 2.1, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen, 5MP camera with 720p, HDMI-out, and DLNA/UPnP support for all your streaming needs. Check out the video below for some side-by-side action with a Samsung Galaxy S.
