Ever dreamed of turning your iPhone or iPad into a TV? Your wish comes true thanks to the EyeTV adapter from Elgato and Dyle mobile.

The device works with a 30-pin connector, making it designed around the older iPad and iPhone accessories, but it does work just fine with a Lightning adapter. The pocket-sized device allows you to pause and resume live TV, gives you access to a program guide and is absolutely NOT tied to your Internet connection. This means that you won’t have to use Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G in order to get TV service.

This unique solution works with all iOS devices at version 5.1 or higher and sets you back just $100. Not bad if you want just basic free channels without much hassle. Is it worth the $100? Depends on what you are looking for. In today’s high-speed Internet environment, watching all the latest shows is as easy as Netflix, Hulu or even a Satellite/Cable provider’s video hub. Still, if you are going to be in an area that has limited Wi-Fi or mobile broadband coverage, this is a great way to watch your shows without needing a connection to the net.

What do you think, interested or not?

You want speed? You want speed that you can take with you on the go? Why not combine two of the fastest technologies in one sleek package? The Elgato Thunderbolt SSD is exactly that.

As you can likely gather from its remarkably descriptive name, this portable drive ditches the conventional spinning platter of a 2.5-inch HDD for the faster memory (and lack of moving parts) offered by SSD storage. Going further, it adds on super-fast Thunderbolt connectivity for an even faster experience. That gives you up to 270MB/s, compared to the 80MB/s of FireWire 800 and the 35MB/s of USB 2.0. Since it’s Thunderbolt, it doesn’t require an external power supply either.

Naturally, the added performance comes at an added price. The 120GB and 240GB versions of the Elgato Thunderbolt SSD portable drive will retail for $429.95 and $699.95 when it ships next month.

The first World Cup 2010 game I had watched was different. It wasn’t the broadcast picture, although I was hoping for an NFL quality feed. It was a humming background noise that slowly grew my agitation. I later found it to be a “traditional” instrument of the South African’s known as the Vuvuzela. This little $3 horn caused not only grief to me, but the players on the field who had to endure its humming harmonic resonance for no less then 90 minutes per match. I said during the match, “cant the audio technicians over there filter out that frequency?” Well, they probably can, but won’t because of the Fifa President’s official message sent out on twitter “I don’t see banning the music traditions of fans in their own country.” It’s one thing to use the instrument for a goal, or exciting moment of a match, but all the freaking time? Elgato has taken things into their own hands and released a special edition of EyeTV 3.4 that offers a feature called the “Vuvuzela Filter” to dampen the buzzing sound of the instrument. Elgato says that this feature can be quickly turned on and off for the “full audio experience” leading me to believe it filters much more than the Vuvuzela. Regardless, if it can remove that blasted buzz, it’s worth a look.

Elgato’s press release:

San Francisco, Calif. – June 23, 2010 – Elgato announces a Special Edition of EyeTV 3.4 that offers a feature called a “Vuvuzela Filter”. This filter dampens the stadium buzz of live football broadcasts on the Mac, and can be quickly switched on and off for the full audio experience at any time during the game. The Vuvuzela Filter is available in EyeTV during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and will disappear with the next software update.

Availability
EyeTV 3.4 Special Edition is available as a free update for EyeTV 3 users. To install the Vuvuzela Filter, simply use this Link. Elgato EyeTV tuners are available at the Elgato Online Store (www.elgato.com), at Apple retail stores and from local Mac resellers.

An EyeTV app gives you the ability to stream live or recorded programs to your iPhone or iPad. I was a bit disappointed to see the lack of any video output, a second input, or network port and only analog input. My question is, is this barebones HD PVR going to bog our Macs down? Possibly, but only testing it will tell. Check the press release below for a good list of its analog capabilities.

Customers can now watch record, edit and enjoy cable and satellite in high-definition, including all their premium channels. EyeTV HD includes a unique dual-format capture mode that records in iPad and iPhone formats at the same time, allowing users to stream live and recorded TV to an iPhone or iPad using the optional EyeTV app.

Easy Setup
EyeTV HD is a breeze to setup and use; simply connect EyeTV HD to the outputs of the cable or satellite receiver with the included component cables, and to the computer via USB.
