It’s an epidemic, really. When most people put on their earphones, they become dead to the outside world. The cyclist can’t hear the car honking at him. The runner can’t hear the person screaming, “Look out!” We’re not about to give up our music any time soon, so what do we do?

SafeSound products has come up with an interesting solution called AIRbudz. These aren’t a separate set of earphones; instead, they work with your existing set to let you simultaneously listen to your tunes and hear the ambient sound around you. The concept is actually really simple: AIRbudz effectively replaces or supplements the silicone insert that you’d normally slip onto your earphone. There are specially designed air channels that allow outside noise to creep in, while still letting the music come through.

This isn’t exactly ideal, but neither is getting side-swiped by traffic when you go out on your jog. You can find AIRbudz on Kickstarter. A minimum pledge of $10 lands you ne of hte first packages of AIRbudz, including a Kickstarter-exclusive carrying case. They’re seeking $22,000 in funding and have until June 9 to do it.

Pioneer has launched an inner ear earphones model capable of offering clear sound and powerful bass with a frequency set between 10Hz and 20 kHz and 16Ω impedance. But where the 3.5mm stereo headphones with gold jack and 1.2 silver cladded wire really changes things, is that they are made of a soft, ergonomic material can be washed with soap and water. What do you do when your earbuds get full of ear wax and all the other bacteria that gets deposited on the earphones’ surface? Just leave them in your pants pocket (intentionally) and send them through the washing machine. The se-cl331′s have a capacity to withstand water because they are protected by two layers of mesh and rubber rings, a metal sheet and a hard casing allow the earphones to withstand water pressure up to one meter without damaging any electronic parts.

The earphones are available in three colors: white, blue and pink and can be purchased for a price tag of $60.

Listener fatigue is a painful discomfort that can happen to anyone listening to an iPod on the subway, a musician playing a gig, or to someone wearing a hearing-aid. If listener fatigue occurs from listening to an iPod, you just take out your earphones. For professional musicians and people who require hearing-aids, it’s not that simple.

Now, a group of sound engineers at Asius Technologies of Longmont, Colorado, may have found a way to prevent listener’s fatigue. The research was led by musician and audio engineer Stephen Ambrose, who has worked for more than 35 years to develop in-ear monitors, devices worn by performers and producers allowing them to hear the music rather than ambient noise.

The team found that listener fatigue happened even when the volume was turned down, which prompted research into physiological causes. Using physical and computational simulations, the researchers suggested that when sound waves enter an ear canal that is sealed from outside sounds by an earbud, an oscillating pressure chamber is created inside the eardrum. The pressure chamber can produce a dramatic boost in sound pressure levels, which triggers an acoustic reflex. The reflex is a defense mechanism in the ear that dampens the transfer of sound energy from the eardrum to the cochlea by as much as 50 decibels, or approximately the volume of a normal conversation.

The acoustic reflex does not stop the pressure oscillations in the eardrum, but instead makes loud volumes seem lower than they really are, which can cause the listener to turn up the volume. The poor ear drum, which has already been shaken by the oscillations of the pressure chamber, is then bombarded with an even greater volume. The tiny muscles involved in the acoustic reflex are activated once again, and the repeated engagement and disengagement of those muscles leads to the pain and discomfort known as listener fatigue.

The researchers presented two solutions to the problem at the 130th Audio Engineering Society convention in London. The first is a retrofit that can be applied to existing in-ear headphones, in which a thin film of polymer is stretched over a pressure-alleviating hole, providing a sacrificial membrane to absorb the pressures that build up in the eardrum. The second approach is a small, inflatable seal that inflates the polymer membrane, which then acts like a second ear drum, directing excess sound energy away from the sensitive structures of the ear.

By stopping the acoustic reflex from triggering, it could help people select lower, safer listening volumes. The tiny muscles involved in the acoustic reflex are no longer being tired out from overuse. The researchers hope the devices will help everyone from musicians to hearing-aid wearers.

Amidst a symphony of competitors, the Panasonic RP-HJE 130 Earphones stand out not because of their design, or specifications, but because of the package design that was created by Scholz And Friends agency in Berlin, Germany – it shows the earphones shaped as eighth-notes with the in-line remote as the connecting bar. In addition to receiving positive reactions from retailers and clients, Panasonic won a Cannes Lions award for the design. Although there is not much information about the earphones’ sound quality, their musical appearance alone may dazzle consumers enough to dance on over. Yes, they outdid Apple in package design.
