Do you want more than a glowing piece of produce on the back of your laptop? Asus sure thinks so and it has just introduced the Asus Taichi to the world. It has a second display that covers the entire back cover. This is certainly the first time I’ve seen this.

To be available in 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch variants, the Asus Taichi has a double-sided IPS display so that you can still use the computer when the lid is closed. Presumably, when the lid is open, you do your computing on the regular screen and share your work with everyone else at the coffee shop with the display on the back. The two displays are independent.

And yes, the back display is a touchscreen, so you can use it like a tablet when the notebook is closed. There is stylus support and we can only assume that they’re going with Windows 8 for this creation. The Taichi is said to be “as light and thin as the Asus Zenbook” and it’ll come powered by 3rd-gen Intel Core processors, SSD storage, and dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi.

I just hope that you get a really good protective sleeve for your Taichi, because I can totally envision far too many people cracking that secondary display.

MMT has returned to CES with a revamped version of Monitor2Go. The display has a 15.6-inch screen, a 1600×900 resolution, and your choice of an iPad 2 or Android tablet slot hinged up to a rotatable display that can turn up, down, clockwise, and counterclockwise. Functioning in both landscape or portrait mode, it comes equipped with HDMI and USB outputs, enabling users to daisy chain up to six devices on a single port. Accountants and number wizards can accessorize it with a numeric keypad/trackpad, and a VES mounting bracket for wall hanging in your office. Rugged aluminum is designed specifically to house, lock, and transport the tablet. Look out for it in Q2 2012 for around $300. Land on mmt2.com for preordering.

Innovative Design Encases Apple’s iPad2 and works with other Mobile Devices

ShowStoppers at CES 2012
2012 International CES
LAS VEGAS & BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Mobile Monitor Technologies (MMT), innovator and maker of the world’s first mobile display, introduced a product at the CES 2012 Showstoppers Media Event that extends the share, work, and watch capabilities of portable displays beyond notebooks and PCs, across the universe of mobile devices.

“Our Field Monitor Pro, which launched and defined the world’s portable display category, was a huge success for business professionals and consumers alike”
Monitor2Go is a 15.6” LCD LED-backlit display that redefines the entire mobile monitor category. Monitor2Go boasts a 1600×900 HD+ screen that not only extends the displays of USB enabled notebooks and PCs, it also mirrors the displays of Apple devices (iPad, iPhone and iPod) and HDMI compatible smart phones and tablets, as well as carries, protects, and locks the iPad2.

“Our Field Monitor Pro, which launched and defined the world’s portable display category, was a huge success for business professionals and consumers alike,” said Larry Pensack, President of MMT. “It is used widely for business applications and general multi-tasking, while many also enjoy it for larger screen viewing of movies, videos, and photos. Now, Monitor2Go adds those benefits, and more, to mobile devices.”

An industry first, the patent-pending Monitor2Go is constructed in sleek and rugged aluminum designed specifically to house, lock, and transport the iPad2 as well as work with other mobile devices. And with over 140,000 apps for the iPad, there are likely to be unlimited uses for Monitor2Go’s large, fully rotatable display. For example:

Share – Rotate Monitor2Go’s 15.6” HD+ screen to share bright, vivid presentations, videos, games, apps, and more.

Work – Eliminate squinting and hunching over a small screen, with nearly triple the screen real estate of the average tablet. For the notebook, Monitor2Go will extend or mirror the screen for up to 30 percent more productivity as compared to single screen computing.

Watch – Connect any phone or media player with HDMI, and you’ve got a mobile theater. Movies, TV shows, home video and photo slideshows in crisp HD wherever you go.

Monitor2Go Features

There’s something to be said about having a second monitor. The dual display configuration can work wonders on your productivity, but without planting yourself down at a desk, it’s just not possible with a laptop. Or is it? Here is the gScreen SpaceBook and it is a true dual-screen notebook PC.

No, it won’t be nearly as thin and light as a Samsung Series 9 or a MacBook Air, but you are afforded a real second display. Not only that, the twin displays are sizable 17-inch 1920×1080 full HD monsters, almost rivaling the kind of setup that you might have on your desktop computer at work… assuming you have two monitors there in the first place.

Remember, though, that while the gScreen SpaceBook is portable, it’s not exactly mobile at a hefty 4.5 kilos (about 10 pounds). Then again, imagine the looks you’ll get at Internet cafes and airport lounges when you whip out this beast of a computer. The rest of the specs are more than adequate too.

The cheaper of the two SKUs ($2,395) has a Core i5-560M 2.66GHz dual core processor, 4GB of DDR3-1333 RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250M 1GB graphics, and a 500GB HDD. Bump up to the more expensive model ($2,795) and you get a Core i7-740QM 1.73GHz quad core CPU and 8GB of RAM. Pre-orders are being taken now with a minimum 50 per cent deposit, with the rest payable once it’s shipped.

A rose by any other name? NEC showed off its LT-W Cloud Communicator a few months ago at CES and now the dual-screen Android tablet is re-emerging with a new name. Behold the NEC LifeTouch W Tablet. The Acer Iconia is the only dual screen tablet in town.

Aside from swapping out the name, NEC doesn’t appear to have changed very much with this since we saw it in January. There are two seven-inch 800×600 displays, but they are sadly both of the resistive touchscreen variety. I guess you need the precision of a stylus to write certain Japanese characters, but capacitive really should be expected in this day and age.

The other big downer? There’s absolutely no mention of any Honeycomb action for this poor tablet, getting stuck with a stretched out version of Android 2.2 Froyo. It also doesn’t help that there’s only 384MB of RAM and a mere five hours of battery life. A Cortex A8 processor runs the show, but they’re not talking about clock speeds.

I don’t mind the idea of a tablet with two touchscreens, since it’s almost like a netbook without a physical keyboard, but the NEC LifeTouch W isn’t really the way to go about doing it. Look at the size of those bezels too! In any case, it’s set to ship to Japanese retailers next month.

Earlier this month, we got our first glimpse at the Kohjinsha dual-display netbook. This is a wholly different kind of product that the rest of the Dell Minis and Eee PCs of the world, because it comes with a pair of 10.1-inch widescreen displays. Based on this video, it looks pretty useful too.

In case you didn’t catch it the first time around, the Kohjinsha dual-display netbook gets powered by an AMD Athlon MV-40 (1.6GHz) processor and the Kohjinsha rep says that this product would not have been possible without this chipset. There’s also 4GB of RAM, a 160GB SATA hard drive, and Windows 7.

The second display slides out from behind the first, much like what we saw with the Lenovo ThinkPad W700, except in a much smaller form factor. The Kohjinsha rep says that this configuration is great for business, since you can have Excel open on one screen while reading reference materials on the other.

Yes, it’s definitely thicker than a conventional 10-inch netbook and the battery life will probably suffer as a result too, but this looks pretty neat. Peep the video below for a good look at the sliding mechanism and more.

I remember when I went to visit Japan a couple of years ago, the whole netbook thing hadn’t really caught on in North America yet. Even so, there were tons of ultraportables on sale in Akihabara, including some crazy compact tablet PCs from Kohjinsha. Well, they’ve done it again.

Now that everyone and their mother wants a netbook, it takes a lot more to differentiate yourself from the competition. Instead of increasing the horsepower or tossing in an integrated Wacom tablet, Kohjinsha has produced a netbook with twin displays. That’s right. You get dual displays in a netbook.

Interestingly, I’m not really sure if you can even call this thing a netbook in the traditional sense. Instead of a single screen, this Kohjinsha has a pair of 10.1-inch LCDs that pump out resolutions of up to 1366 x 768 pixels each. Instead of Intel Atom, it gets an AMD Athlon MV-40.

Going further, you can also expect a full four gigs of DDR2 RAM, a SATA hard drive, and Windows 7. The dual display thing happens with a sliding mechanism to hide the second screen when it’s time to hit the road.

As with all other Kohjinsha products, I don’t expect to see this in Canada or the US any time soon. If you must have it, I suggest you book a flight over to Tokyo (or find an importer).
