Nuance Communications announced today that its Dragon Drive! Messaging system is on its way to select model BMW vehicles starting this month. For those who haven’t been following, Dragon Drive! is an auto car service announced in May that allows people to send emails and text using nothing but spoken language, allowing them to keep their hands on the wheel.

The new system allows drivers to format emails through talking, adding new lines, paragraphs and saying the punctuation needed. The system will find its way to the new 2012 BMW 7 Series and shortly after will make its way into the BMW 3 Series Touring and ActiveHybrids.

With text and chat-related phone usage causing more and more accidents, its not surprising to see this kind of technology coming to premium automobile companies like BMW. Apparently Dragon Drive will support six languages – US English, UK English, French, Italian, German and Spanish.

BURLINGTON, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Nuance Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) today announced that BMW will be making Dragon Drive! Messaging available in the new 2012 BMW 7 Series, BMW 3 Series Touring and BMW 3 Series ActiveHybrid vehicles, with additional models to follow. Dragon Drive! Messaging is a new BMW ConnectedDrive feature as part of the latest generation of BMW Navigation system Professional. Unveiled in May, Dragon Drive! Messaging is Nuance’s new automotive-grade connected car service that lets people speak emails and text messages.

“Navigate to 100 Boylston Street in Boston, Massachusetts.”

The 2012 BMW 7 Series will be the first car ever to feature Dragon Drive! Messaging, hitting the market in July 2012, with the BMW 3 Series Touring and BMW 3 Series ActiveHybrid following later this year. Dragon Drive! Messaging delivers a fully-integrated mobile assistant messaging experience that lets drivers speak, listen, edit and respond to text messages and emails – keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Drivers can speak simple commands to format e-mails by adding new lines, paragraphs, and speaking punctuation and other format commands.

“People want to connect with family, friends, and colleagues while they’re on the road, but without the dangerous distractions posed by manually engaging handheld devices,” said Arnd Weil, vice president and general manager, automotive, Nuance. “By integrating Dragon Drive! Messaging into the car itself, BMW and Nuance are delivering a smarter, safer way to communicate.”

Dragon Drive! Messaging is available as part of Nuance’s Dragon Drive! highly-specialized hybrid automotive-grade platform that fully harnesses Nuance’s deep experience and research in connected and embedded natural language understanding voice technologies. Drivers can interact naturally with their car, minimizing manual and visual distractions.

In addition to the dictation functionality, the new BMW Navigation system Professional also features natural command and control for almost all functions, powered by Nuance. Drivers can quickly and easily speak one-shot commands for phone calls and navigation, such as “Call John Miller on Mobile” or “Navigate to 100 Boylston Street in Boston, Massachusetts.”

Availability

Dragon Drive! Messaging will be available in BMW vehicles starting in July 2012 in six different languages, including US and UK English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. BMW buyers can test Dragon Drive! Messaging for free for 60 days. Once the trial period expires, Dragon Drive! Messaging will be available as a Nuance service with annual renewal option.
You don’t need to have an R2-D2 unit in the back to talk to your vehicle. You even need to whip out your cell phone either, because Nuance Communications has officially unveiled Dragon Drive, a voice-based system that some are calling Siri for cars. I’m sure Apple appreciates the connection.

While there are already voice-based systems in cars, like Ford Sync by Microsoft, they can only do “local” things like change the song or adjust climate control. With Dragon Drive, the voice commands can extend to Nuance’s cloud-based language servers via 3G or 4G. This is not unlike the voice searches that you’d conduct on your smartphone of choice. Just like Siri, Dragon Drive can intepret context and intent, searching for information as needed. You just speak naturally, rather than having to follow a set voiced formula.

To be fair, you’re not getting “full” Siri functionality here. At least not yet, since Nuance is starting with just an SMS service via Dragon Drive. As adoption continues and grows, Nuance will layer on additional functions and features, like adapted versions of Dragon Dictation and DragonGo search. They could conceivably use Dragon Drive to look up real-time weather or traffic, or even find “recommended” songs that are similar to your existing playlist.

Is there another car that comes to mind when it comes to speaking naturally to your automobile? Nuance thinks so. EVP and GM Mike Thompason says, “We are already making KITT in many ways.”
