And that’s exactly what James Cameron has been able to do.

He went in a one-man submarine called the Deepsea Challenger (he refers to it as a “vertical torpedo”) to the Mariana Trench. This is located an incredible seven miles below sea level and it’s the same place that Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard and Navy Lt. Don Walsh went for twenty minutes back in 1960. The difference is that Cameron is spending six hours there, capturing footage that will then be converted into a documentary. He’s also collecting samples for scientific study.

The Deepsea Challenger, as you can imagine, has been specially designed to withstand the immense pressure of being that deep under the sea. Imagine seven miles worth of ocean crushing down on you from pretty well all sides.

Going back to ancient warfare, it was all about hand-to-hand combat. We saw advances in technology there as people were able to develop better swords, clubs, axes and so on. Then, projectile warfare entered the picture with weapons like the bow and arrow; that changed things. Then things radically changed again with the introduction of guns and cannons.

We’re in the middle of another huge revolution when it comes to warfare and it has to do with the increased use of robots and unmanned drones. Instead of sending the actual soldier into the line of fire, you send a bot to do the job and, to some extent, you give the bot the autonomy to make its own decisions. That’s good and bad, depending on your perspective.

Embedded below is a fascinating documentary on how military drones are changing war, narrated by Josh Rushing. He is a 14-year veteran of the US Marines and is currently a journalist. Your propaganda alarms should be on alert, as with any of these kinds of programs with a clear agenda, but it’s fascinating to watch nonetheless and well worth the 24 minutes of your time. Is Skynet really right around the corner?

You might remember my article from a couple years ago when I said that plug-in electric cars are not the future. Even so, there is a big push toward hybrids and electrics these days and it really represents the resurgence of a pre-existing idea. As such, a documentary has been made and it is titled, appropriately enough, Revenge of the Electric Car. A follow up to the 2006 film Who Killed The Electric Car?

Almost taking a Michael Moore-like approach, the new movie talks about how “as many as 5,000 modern electric cars were destroyed by the major car companies that build them” in 2006, but now the electric car is back “with a vengeance.” It features exclusive interviews with people like Bob Lutz of GM, Carlos Ghosn of Nissan-Renault, and Elon Musk of Tesla. Between them, we see cars like the Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf, and Tesla Roadster.

The documentary opens on October 21 in New York (Landmark Sunshine Cinema) and Los Angeles (Landmark Nuart), with more screens across the country taking on the picture in the days and months to follow. These include Nashville, Portland, Scottsdale, Houston, Detroit (how appropriate!), Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Denver, Honolulu, and more.

Check out the trailer below.

Last night I was with family and housework free, I decided to do some channel surfing on the tube and came upon a special called ‘Google World’ on CBC’s Doc Zone. I had not seen any promotions for the show in the past, so I was intrigued and fascinated by how current the information was on Google’s position in our lives today and their future plans for cloud computing.

It all began with Google’s first Server. It was made of begged and borrowed equipment with a housing consisting of children’s mega blocks, it was launched on April 1, 1997. The documentary goes on to show some highlights of the last ten years, and how Google has gone from a search engine, to one of the most powerful advertising companies, and is now moving into the world of cloud computing.

Google’s goal with cloud computing is to give you access to everything you need, personal or professional, from anywhere at anytime on any thing, even on your mobile. This was the main focus of the behind-the-scenes documentary which was filmed at Googleplex, the Silicon Valley headquarters, in Russia and even at its China offices. Google’s plans are “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful” and they expect to accomplish this in the next 300 years. Google CEO Eric Schmidt stated, “Successful companies start with very audacious goals.” If Google succeeds in accomplishing this goal, it will be the most powerful company/entity/place, ever.

This documentary definitely showed a different side of Google’s working atmosphere. There policies are very mindful of their employees and encourage each to spend time enjoying and taking care of themselves. Apparently Gmail was created in a day; they have a very popular social networking site that never really developed here and so much more. And they did refer to the rumor that Google was started in a garage. Well it did, but according to employee #1, who really wants that rumor to stay true, he did “reveal” that the garage did happen to have a house and rooms attached to it.

Google World was produced by Ted Remerowski for Centillion Productions Ltd. in association with CBC-TV. Original airing was last night but their will be a re-airing on Friday (tonight) at 10pm ET/PT on CBC News Network or you can catch the full documentary online here (45 minutes runtime).
