The Mango update to Windows Phone 7, which is being referred to as Windows Phone 7.5 in many circles, comes with a whole bunch of new features and bug fixes. So, when are we going to get our hands on the delicious tropical fruit? If you happen to have a Dell Venue Pro, then Dell says it’ll have some Mango for you later this fall… but that comes with a caveat.

If you have an unlocked Dell Venue Pro, you’re in luck. If you have a Dell Venue Pro that is locked to T-Mobile or Cincinnati Bell, you’re also in luck. However, if you’re one of the unlucky souls who has a DVP locked to AT&T, Dell isn’t quite so forthcoming with the Mango for you. It says that information for AT&T-locked units “will be forthcoming.”

That doesn’t mean that AT&T DVPs will be without Mango, but it does seem to indicate that they’ll be the last to the party. With Mango around the corner and Nokia set to release its first official WP7 device very soon too, this could bode well for Microsoft’s mobile operating system. I imagine it’ll take quite some time before it can snag significant market share away from Apple and Google, but this is a good first leap.

It has slid in at $99 with new activation and 2-year contract. The regularly priced $450 phone runs a 1Ghz Qualcomm QSD8250 processor, shoots HD video and has the flashy new Windows mobile OS. Although WP7 has a long way to go, you can expect much of the “holes” to be address in the January update. In the mean time, you’ll have some time to familiarize yourself with the interface and at a pretty reasonable price too. A full QWERTY keyboard on the slider has non-traditional, usually HTC and Samsung opt for a landscape oriented setup, this one is more akin to the Palm Pre and Pixi, could the Windows OS have anything do to with that?

It’s an 8GB unit and will be on T-Mobile, a 16GB Venue Pro can be had for $50 more.

That’s why I’m happy to hear Microsoft’s intent on bringing more QWERTY-packing Windows Phone 7 devices to the Canadian market.

Right now, the only Windows Phone 7 device officially available in Canada with a hardware keyboard is the LG Optimus Quantum (available through Bell Mobility). The other offerings, like the Samsung Focus and HTC Surround, are touchscreen-only affairs. Moving forward, Greg Milligan of Microsoft Canada says that “if you’re the type of person that loves a hardware keyboard, you’re going to see more phones like that coming out in the future.”

More specifically, he names Dell as a manufacturer coming to Canadian market in 2011. If that’s the case, then we should probably be expecting the Dell Venue Pro through a carrier in Canada in the coming months. I really like the idea of a portrait slider and while Windows Phone 7 isn’t quite “there” just yet, it’s showing a lot of potential to compete against its Android and iOS brethren.

The other major hardware keyboard-packing WP7 device is the HTC 7 Pro. That’s probably making its way to the Great White North too. “There’s a lot of excitement in this space,” says Milligan, “and we can’t wait to roll out more devices in the Canadian market.” [Redboard]
