The United States Defense Information Systems Agency, or DISA, has just approved the Dell Streak. Running the Android 2.2 OS, the Streak 5 has been officially certified by DISA. This secure mobile device will not be used to handle any top secret or classified information, but it will be used for certain secure communications like Facebook, twitter and forwarding chain letters to your DISA buddies.

Dell and Good Technologies have been working with the US Department of Defense for over a year to create a secure Android platform. The Streak that has been approved and they’ve included additional features to make the device even more secure. The additional security features of the DISA-approved Streak 5 include the ability to have data wiped from it remotely if one is ever lost or stolen and enhanced password protection. Every Streak 5 being issued also comes with additional “mobile security” with which we are not privy to.

This seems to be only the beginning for the DOD and similar mobile devices. As new Android devices come available, they should be able to be easily integrated for military and other Defense Department use now that the Streak 5 and its special OS has paved the way.

If you want to play spy and get your hands on your own Dell Streak 5, you better get over to eBay. Dell removed this pocket tablet from its US product line back in August of this year, and it is “unavailable” on Dell’s Canadian site too.

Dell isn’t just about laptops and desktops. The Axim line may not have been the most successful thing in the world, but the world’s largest computer maker is ready to give it another go with “a whole slew” of new products that aim to battle with the iPad and other tablets.

The Dell Streak 5-inch tablet is already out in the wild and they’ve got plans on raising the stakes with a new seven-inch Android tablet very soon, and an additional 10-inch tablet within the next year. But that’s not where they’re stopping. Dell Greater China President Amit Midha says they’re also planning a three-inch, four-inch, and (another?) 10-inch device in the near future.

While the iPad sticks to iOS and the new BlackBerry PlayBook uses its new OS, Dell isn’t sticking to any one particular camp. This diversified portfolio — which could include Android, Windows, and even Chrome OS — could help to boost sales for Dell… or it could just dilute the brand and confuse consumers.

For my part, I love competition. It’s not really good for anyone when there is just one major player in the game. From Samsung to RIM, Moto to Dell, they all want a piece of the iPad pie. Which slice you choose is up to you, but at least you can choose your slice.

The tablet market is about to get even more crowded. Dell has already made an appearance with its Dell Streak handheld, but that only has a five-inch screen. Now, we’re getting a good glimpse at an upcoming 7-inch slate, which bears a striking resemblance to the Looking Glass tablet PC we saw some time back.

As can be expected, the yet unnamed device (possibly Streak 7 or some variation?) will be running on a newer build of Google Android than the current 1.6 OS that powers the 5-inch Streak. The screen is bigger too, of course, but we’re hearing that the processor is getting bumped into the dual-core Tegra 2 variety. That should help to enhance the performance.

Aside from that, Michael Dell and the rest of his team are staying pretty mum on the specifics. It seems that seven inches is quickly becoming the magical size for Android tablets and it’ll be interesting to see what Dell does to separate itself from the pack. Lets hope the touchscreen is a bit more responsive once it gets released than in the video.

For now, the word going around the blogosphere is that the 7-inch Dell Android tablet could hit as early as Q4 of this year, but an early 2011 launch is probably more likely. This way, they can preload the thing with the newest Android OS possible.

Dell is attempting to flourish in the creativity department. Their latest creation with unimaginable inspiration comes in the form of their new Inspiron Duo 10” tablet/netbook concraption. The Flip screen device will allow itself to be either a netbook, or a tablet – depending on your mood. One thing to keep in mind is these types of convertible tablets are more often than not, running Windows 7 Premium. Basically you’re using a pen on your desktop; which isn’t the greatest experience in terms of intuitiveness. When will manufacturers drop these dual-functioning tablet/notebooks? I’m not sure about you, but I don’t wan’t a crappy tablet attached to a netbook or notebook. Just give me the best damn tablet and be done with it. Not some wanna be laptop with a touchscreen. Prove me wrong with a Windows 7 variant optimized for tablets, otherwise give me an iPad or Galaxy Tab and be done with it.
