The United States Defense Information Systems Agency, or DISA, has just approved the Dell Streak. Running the Android 2.2 OS, the Streak 5 has been officially certified by DISA. This secure mobile device will not be used to handle any top secret or classified information, but it will be used for certain secure communications like Facebook, twitter and forwarding chain letters to your DISA buddies.

Dell and Good Technologies have been working with the US Department of Defense for over a year to create a secure Android platform. The Streak that has been approved and they’ve included additional features to make the device even more secure. The additional security features of the DISA-approved Streak 5 include the ability to have data wiped from it remotely if one is ever lost or stolen and enhanced password protection. Every Streak 5 being issued also comes with additional “mobile security” with which we are not privy to.

This seems to be only the beginning for the DOD and similar mobile devices. As new Android devices come available, they should be able to be easily integrated for military and other Defense Department use now that the Streak 5 and its special OS has paved the way.

If you want to play spy and get your hands on your own Dell Streak 5, you better get over to eBay. Dell removed this pocket tablet from its US product line back in August of this year, and it is “unavailable” on Dell’s Canadian site too.

Everyone is getting entrenched in the tablet game for 2011, hoping to knock the iPad out of the top spot (or at least carving out a sizable slice of the pie). What’s Dell doing? Well, we’ve got the leaked roadmap for at least three new devices.

Dell already has the five-inch Streak out there, but a larger 10-inch (1280×800) Dell Streak Pro is slated for launch in June of this year. That’s still some ways out, but we’re hearing it’ll rock Honeycomb, Stage 1.5 UI, and a Tegra 2 processor. This pretty much puts it on par with some of the offerings from LG, Samsung, Motorola, and others.

I’m not sure if this is still the brightest move at this point, but Dell is also planning a 10-inch Windows-powered tablet called the Dell Latitude ST. I suppose this will cater more to the enterprise market with its active pen support. Other highlights include the 1.5GHz Intel Atom Z670 Oak Trail processor, 1366×768 resolution, up to 128GB SSD, dual cameras, 1080p output, and Windows 7. Expect that in October.

The Inspiron Duo might be doing the flipping thing for consumers, but business folks may be more inclined to consider the 13-inch Latitude XT-3 convertible tablet. They’re using Intel Huron River Core i3/i5/i7 processors, 4GB RAM, active pen support, smart card reader, fingerprint reader, and an encrypted HDD. That drops in July.

Maybe that larger five-inch screen isn’t going over so well with consumers. Maybe more people have turned their attention over to the hot new Google Nexus S for their Android follies. Whatever the case, the Dell Streak has just been hit with a price drop to the sub-three figure mark.

If you make your way over to your local Best Buy Mobile location, you’ll learn that Dell’s smartphone-cum-tablet is currently selling for $99.99 with a qualifying two-year AT&T service contract. That’s actually a really good deal for something like this, assuming that you can shoehorn the five-inch handheld into your jeans pocket.

As a bit of a Debbie Downer, the Streak is still shipping with the rather dated Android 1.6 Donut, but the Android 2.2 Froyo update is being planned for release some time in January. That’s not terribly long to wait, is it?

Running through the quick spec sheet, we find a 5MP camera, VGA front-facing cam, microSD slot, and 16GB internal memory. And that big screen. You can’t forget about the big screen.

Right now, about 7% of businesses provide tablets to their employees for work-related duties. That sounds pretty good, considering that tablets are still a relatively new phenomenon, but that number is set to explode very soon. In fact, that number is expected to double in the next couple of months.

This comes by way of a survey conducted by ChangeWave. Not surprisingly, the Apple iPad is by far the most popular tablet device being provided by companies to their employees. It accounts for 82% of the corporate tablet market, compared to 11% for HP (Slate) and 7% for Dell (Streak). The iPad owners are happier too with 69% very satisfied and 28% somewhat satisfied. When HP Slate corporate users were polled, only 23% were very satisfied and 46% were somewhat satisfied.

Perhaps the most interesting statistic to come out of this survey, though, is the explosive growth expected in the next quarter. An incredible 14% of businesses surveyed say that they will be buying tablets in the first quarter of 2011. That’s double the current demand, representing almost exponential growth. It won’t be long before outfitting employees with tablets could become just as commonplace as outfitting them with smartphones.

Maybe this growth can be attributed to the upcoming RIM PlayBook? Not exactly. Of those companies expected to buy tablets in Q1, only 9% are opting for the BlackBerry option. An overwhelming 78% are still turning to Cupertino for their tablet needs moving forward.

This just goes to show you that the iPad may look like a consumer-friendly media consumption device, but it’s got plenty of potential on Wall Street too. It’s a good time to be a tablet maker… if you’re Apple.

Do you want the largest Android smartphone on the market but not at all interested in signing a carrier contract? Well, you’re in luck. Head on over to Dell and they’ll gladly equip you with a factory unlocked Dell Streak. Better yet, it comes with Android 2.2 right out of the box.

As you may already know, the locked version of the Streak being sold by wireless providers can still come preloaded with Android 1.6, so it’s nice to see the newer OS version pre-installed on the unlocked variant.

The five-inch behemoth of a smartphone (you can call it a tablet if you prefer) does the multi-touch thing for zoom and it supports Flash. It’ll do USB tethering and 3G hotspot creation too, should you feel so inclined. I’m not a fan of a phone of this size, but I have at least one friend who is very interested.

For now, the factory unlocked Streak only comes in black and sells for $579. If you can hold out (and if you’re okay with carrier locks), AT&T will have a white model and a Cherry Red version too, both of which are $550 sans contract. Lock in for two years of data and it can be had for $300.

Some people like their mobile phones to be a little more compact, but that trend has definitely swung in the other direction in recent years. “Slate” style smartphones are all the rage and Acer is prepared to go big rather than go home with its upcoming 4.8-inch monster.

This Acer Android smartphone isn’t quite as big as the Dell Streak, but it can easily dwarf the likes of the Galaxy S or even the Droid X. The behemoth of a smartphone rocks a 1024 x 480 pixel resolution, 1GHZ processor, 8MP camera, 2MP front cam, and HSPA+14.4 connectivity.

The idea with this yet unnamed device sounds a lot like what the Dell Streak is trying to achieve. According to Acer, it’s meant to be a smartphone and a tablet all rolled into one. Speaking for myself, I’d rather than a 3.5-inch (or so) smartphone and a seven-inch tablet, but there are certainly different strokes for different folks.

I do find the 21:9 aspect ratio to be anything but conventional, though. By not being quite as wide in portrait mode, relatively speaking, this might be a little more pocket-friendly than the Streak. In any case, the 4.8-inch Acer device should launch around the same time as the company’s 7-inch and 10-inch tablets next April.

While I still think the Dell Streak is a bit of an anomoly in the technology world, the five-inch smartphone/tablet hybrid certainly has its place. Maybe you like the form factor, but you want a little more? It seems that the Streak’s successor is already in the works and it’s going to be called the Dell Opus One.

From the outside, the Opus One looks a lot like its Streak cousin, but there are two very notable upgrades found under the hood. Its display is still five-inches across the diagonal, but the resolution has been increased from 800 x 480 to 1280 x 800. The 1GHz CPU has also been replaced, getting a 1.2GHz dual-core processor in its place.

With these two upgrades, the Dell Opus One becomes quite the heavy lifter, giving you plenty of screen real estate for surfing, games, and movies. The beefier processor will come in handy too, as will the latest version of Android.

That’s the good news. On the down side, the Opus One isn’t going to make it into consumers’ hands until March 2011. By that time, we could be looking at much more powerful and drool-worthy devices from other manufacturers and the Opus One could end up being just par for the course. These are all still rumors at this point.

Let’s say that you’re interested in some Android action. Let’s also say that you’re undecided on whether you want to do that in smartphone form or tablet form. And maybe you like Rogers. If that’s the case, we’ve got some good news: the Dell Streak has arrived. Well, sort of. Rogers isn’t quite ready to sell this in-between device just yet, but the dummy version of the handset has started arriving at various Rogers outlets across the country. Just as dummies of the Captivate showed up, the real thing went on sale a couple weeks later, we can probably expect the same for the Streak. This would put the release some time in November.

As a quick reminder, this smartphone-tablet features a 5-inch WVGA display and a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 8250 processor. I think it’s a little too big to hold up to your head, but it could be a little too small to be a proper tablet. I have at least one friend who loves this “neither here nor there” size, though.

The Dell Streak will ship with Android 1.6 preloaded, but an upgrade to OS 2.1 should be made available shortly after launch–i’m assuming. The rest of the specs call for 512MB ROM, 512MB RAM, microSD expansion, 5MP camera, front-facing VGA cam, GPS, Wi-Fi, and a 3.5mm headset jack. No word on price, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see this for $299 on a three-year.

Rogers is taking shape to be a leader of Android handset offerings. We know the Samsung Galaxy S Captivate should be launching shortly, and now we know it’s getting hitched up next to the Dell Streak. Rogers could be called the AT&T of Canada.

Remember the old Axim line of PDAs? Well, the Streak line should be a little more popular, even if it’s size is unconventional. That 5-inch multi-touch display makes it a little too awkward to hold up to your face for phone calls, a little too small to compete head on with the 7-inch Galaxy Tab and 10-inch iPad, perhaps that was Dell’s plan all along.

The Dell Streak is one of those devices for people who simply cannot make up their minds and end up somewhere in the middle. It’s also odd that Android 1.6 Donut, is shipping on it. You’d expect something in the 2.x family of Android platforms at the least. Where will that leave you once Android 2.3 is in the wild? If the “dealer merchandising materials” sheet is any indication of what is to come, those hollow dummy models of the Streak will hit physical shelves later this month; an official device launch would follow early November.

Dell isn’t just about laptops and desktops. The Axim line may not have been the most successful thing in the world, but the world’s largest computer maker is ready to give it another go with “a whole slew” of new products that aim to battle with the iPad and other tablets.

The Dell Streak 5-inch tablet is already out in the wild and they’ve got plans on raising the stakes with a new seven-inch Android tablet very soon, and an additional 10-inch tablet within the next year. But that’s not where they’re stopping. Dell Greater China President Amit Midha says they’re also planning a three-inch, four-inch, and (another?) 10-inch device in the near future.

While the iPad sticks to iOS and the new BlackBerry PlayBook uses its new OS, Dell isn’t sticking to any one particular camp. This diversified portfolio — which could include Android, Windows, and even Chrome OS — could help to boost sales for Dell… or it could just dilute the brand and confuse consumers.

For my part, I love competition. It’s not really good for anyone when there is just one major player in the game. From Samsung to RIM, Moto to Dell, they all want a piece of the iPad pie. Which slice you choose is up to you, but at least you can choose your slice.
