Frustrated with getting stuck with boxed iPhone apps on your iPad? Cydia has had a tweak available for jailbroken iPads, called FullForce that could be the perfect solution. FullForce forces iPhone apps to full screen without distortion and without the 2x zoom that iOS already provides.

Cydia keeps a list of apps that are compatible with its tweak and just added to that list is Google’s newly released iOS version of Maps.

The new app runs flawlessly using FullForce except for a few minor things like the sidebar. Hopefully Google just releases an app made for the iPad, but until then this does nicely to bridge the obvious gaps in the current map app.

Do you prefer Google Maps to Apple Apps? Would you like to see a way to make it the default map app for iPads?

Do you have a new iPad mini or a new iPad 4? It looks like the Dev-Team people are once again on your side, because they’ve released an update to redsn0w that allows you to save your iOS 6.0 blobs off to Cydia. Naturally, they recommend that you stick with 6.0 if that’s where you are at the moment.

They also note that several bug fixes come along with redsn0w 0.9.15b3, including an error that Windows users were encountering with the Restore button, as well as an iTunes error for stitched files. As per the Dev-Team blog:

Version 0.9.15b3 fixes the redsn0w “error 2601” that Windows users were seeing using the Restore button. It also fixes a related Windows iTunes error 14 for stitched files. Note that if you have a baseband, you should probably avoid stitching and simply use redsn0w’s native Restore (not iTunes).

Those lucky recipients of new iPad minis and iPad4s on Friday can use this redsn0w to save your 6.0 blobs off to Cydia. First connect your new device and turn it on, then use redsn0w’s Extras->SHSH Blobs->New and point it at the 6.0 IPSW.

I didn’t see any updates since, but they were also promising an ultrasn0w compatibility update for iOS 6.0 that is “mostly useful for 3GS old-bootrom users who are currently enjoying the untethered 6.0 jailbreak.” That will have the same baseband support as with iOS 5.x.

In any case, the downloads of redsn0w 0.9.15b3 are available now for OS X and for Windows.

Maybe you’re not a fan of the Siri or you think your digital voice assistant could use some digital assistance. If you’ve got a jailbroken iPhone, you can now pick up the NowNow app to address that very need.

I should be clear, though, that this isn’t really Google Now in the way that you get with Android Jelly Bean. You don’t get those “cards” for the weather and directions for the drive home. Instead, what NowNow does is bring Google Voice Search to the forefront. All you have to do is hold the home button and up will pop the Google Voice Search. That part of the interface really does look like the Android equivalent.

It should be noted that Google Voice Search doesn’t communicate with other iOS apps, so you won’t be able to set appointments or that kind of thing, but you might find the Google searches to be more accurate than what Siri is giving you. You can find NowNow in the BigBoss repository in Cydia and it’s a free download.

To jailbreak or not to jailbreak, that is the question. There are ways to get a jailbreak up and running for iOS 6 A4-powered devices that will fully work and install the unofficial appstore we know and love (Cydia), but they require a tethered approach.

In case you are new to the jailbreak scene, a tethered solution basically means that the jailbreak needs to be booted by connecting to the computer. Tethered jailbreaks can be quite the headache unless you are certain that your iDevice will always be charged and on unless you happen to be near your PC/laptop.

The good news is that this version is supposed to be installed very easy. The jailbreak software recognizes you have iOS 6 and installs only the needed files, Cydia included. Still, some of us just don’t like the idea of a tethered jailbreak.

So what do you think? Going to give this a chance or will you hold off and wait for a tetherless solution to arrive?

Good news! If you happen to be using the latest version of RedSn0w, you can safely update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iOS 5.1.1 without losing your jailbreak status. This has apparently been confirmed by Redmond Pie, as well as another iOS developer.

Before you go ahead and nab that newest version of iOS, however, you’ll need to download or keep a copy of iOS 5.1 handy. When you’re ready, update your iDevice to iOS 5.1.1 and then open up RedSn0w. From there, specify that it needs to use the old iOS 5.1 file, which will effectively get it to do the previous software jailbreak again. Check off the box to install Cydia too.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that this is still a tethered jailbreak, so you will need to reconnect your iOS device ever time you choose to restart it if you want to keep the jailbreak going.

Have you ever wanted to check the weather on your iPhone, but didn’t want to fumble through to unlock the device, open the app, and wait for the info to show up? Forecast makes things much easier, because it puts the weather report right there on the lock screen.

The functionality is remarkably simple. The part of the iOS 5 lock screen that normally only shows the date and the time is redesigned to include a weather image, the high and low temperature, the current temperature, and last updated time. Yes, this means that your clock will have to be a bit smaller, but that’s a small price to pay to have weather at your fingertips like that. Just keep in mind that having the weather widget run in the background like that will consume data.

This really isn’t terribly different from the countless weather widgets available for the Android platform, but it is nice that you don’t even need to unlock the phone to see the report. You can even switch between the current weather and the weekly forecast simply by swiping from side to side. Not surprisingly, this is a Cydia hack, so you will need to jailbreak that iPhone before getting Forecast. Find it in the ModMyi repository on Cydia for 99 cents.

Remember the Classic iOS ’86 Theme that we found last week? Now, you can load it up on your preferred iDevice and kick it old school like the cool kids. Not surprisingly, you’ll need to jailbreak your iPhone to get this theme through Cydia.

The actual instructions are reasonably straightforward, especially if you’re already familiar with getting new themes via Cydia. The iOS ’86 theme will work on both the iPhone and iPod touch, of course, and it’s designed to mirror the appearance of the original Mac OS. I think it looks more like the OS from the old Palm Pilots, myself. The originaly iOS ’86 theme was designed by Anton of Russia, but it has been replicated by iTheme and that’s the version available to you now.

To get the theme in Cydia, go to manage, then sources, then edit. Add “repo.ithemes.it” to the list. Tap the search button and find “iOS 86 theme.” Install and apply via Winterboard. Your background image will still be there by default, so you’ll want this blank wallpaper as your home screen to complete the effect.

Whether you have an iPod, an iPhone, or an iPad, you probably sync your music and video library to your iDevice using iTunes. That’s fine for your own collection, but what if you have more than one iTunes library? That’s where you might want to give MultiTunes a try.

You will need to jailbreak your iDevice first, since MultiTunes is only available (for free!) through the Cydia Store, but it effectively lets you sync to multiple iTunes libraries on a single device. The libraries don’t really merge though. Instead, you have to switch between them on the fly if you want to access the different sets of tunes.

First, you select the library in MultiTunes and then you sync the corresponding library with the computer. You repeat the process with new libraries. When you want to listen to your music, you go into the MultiTunes apps and pick the library you want, flipping over to the Music or iPod app to find the tunes in that library. When you want music from a different library, you go into MultiTunes to pick that one instead before going back to the Music or iPod app.

Are you frustrated by the multitasking on your Apple iPhone and wish there was a better way to quickly switch between apps? Chpwn has come up with a nice little tweak for all the jailbroken iOS owners out there and it’s called Zephyr.

Available through the Cydia Store for $2.99, Zephyr comes with two multitasking gestures. The first lets you swipe from the bottom of the screen to reveal an app switcher. The second lets you swipe from the left or right of the screen to quickly switch between recently used applications. Do these sound familiar? They should.

If you remember webOS, it had effectively the same gestures. Long swipes across the gesture area would switch apps and a big swipe from the gesture area to the touchscreen would show your app dock. The horizontal app-switching swipes also work on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. I’m not taking anything away from Chpwn (Grant Paul), per se. He had to get his inspiration from somewhere. You’ll need to be jailbroken first.

I’ve got some good news and some bad news for all the Cydia fans in the audience. The good news is that they’ve figured out how to jailbreak the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2. The bad news is that the jailbreak isn’t quite ready for public consumption just yet.

Not surprisingly, the jailbreak solution comes to us from the iPhone Dev Team, the same people that did Yellowsn0w, Redsn0w, and all the other sn0w jailbreaks for previous iDevices. While the jailbreak appears to be playing friendly with the A5 processor and iOS 5, there are “huge missing pieces” that prevent the jailbreak from hitting public release.

Considering that the original jailbreak of the iPhone 4 was demonstrated on July 2, but wasn’t released to the public until August 2, we might have to assume that the work being put in by the iPhone Dev Team will be much the same for the iPhone 4S. So, even though the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S have been jailbroken, you likely won’t be doing the Cydia thing on there until the end of November. Is this a bit premature to announce? We think so, reminds us of those 1TB SSD drives announced 2 years ago but never actually made it to market until last week.
