Classic iOS ’86 Theme for iPhone Now Available for Download

Remember the Classic iOS ’86 Theme that we found last week? Now, you can load it up on your preferred iDevice and kick it old school like the cool kids. Not surprisingly, you’ll need to jailbreak your iPhone to get this theme through Cydia.

The actual instructions are reasonably straightforward, especially if you’re already familiar with getting new themes via Cydia. The iOS ’86 theme will work on both the iPhone and iPod touch, of course, and it’s designed to mirror the appearance of the original Mac OS. I think it looks more like the OS from the old Palm Pilots, myself. The originaly iOS ’86 theme was designed by Anton of Russia, but it has been replicated by iTheme and that’s the version available to you now.

To get the theme in Cydia, go to manage, then sources, then edit. Add “repo.ithemes.it” to the list. Tap the search button and find “iOS 86 theme.” Install and apply via Winterboard. Your background image will still be there by default, so you’ll want this blank wallpaper as your home screen to complete the effect.

Zephyr Adds webOS-Style Multitasking Gestures To iPhone

Are you frustrated by the multitasking on your Apple iPhone and wish there was a better way to quickly switch between apps? Chpwn has come up with a nice little tweak for all the jailbroken iOS owners out there and it’s called Zephyr.

Available through the Cydia Store for $2.99, Zephyr comes with two multitasking gestures. The first lets you swipe from the bottom of the screen to reveal an app switcher. The second lets you swipe from the left or right of the screen to quickly switch between recently used applications. Do these sound familiar? They should.

If you remember webOS, it had effectively the same gestures. Long swipes across the gesture area would switch apps and a big swipe from the gesture area to the touchscreen would show your app dock. The horizontal app-switching swipes also work on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. I’m not taking anything away from Chpwn (Grant Paul), per se. He had to get his inspiration from somewhere. You’ll need to be jailbroken first.

Updated Cydia makes it easier to re-download your purchases

Jailbreaking your iPhone isn’t exactly a permanent thing. Every time that the boys and girls in Cupertino push out a new version of iOS and you choose to hit the upgrade button, your once jailbroken iPhone gets back behind its Apple-branded bars.

Sure, you can re-jailbreak your iPhone when the newest solution hits the net, but then you’re stuck having to manually re-apply all the purchases and downloads that you made through the jailbroken scene. The newest version of Cydia will help you, if only a little, in that regard.

No, it won’t automatically provide a new jailbreak solution the moment a new iOS is released, but it will be able to track your purchases and downloads made through the Cydia store. You just need to link up your account with either your Google or Facebook account.

Then, when you manage to re-jailbreak your iDevice, you can hop on over to Cydia and quickly re-apply the jailbroken goods you had once installed on a free device not long before. It’s not perfect, but that’s the price you pay for going against the big Apple.
