You know the story of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and how there was that Golden Ticket that would let the lucky kids tour the factory? Apparently, Steve Jobs was hoping to do the same thing, except he wanted a golden ticket in the millionth iMac sold for the opportunity for the winner to visit him in Cupertino.

But that’s not where Steve Jobs was going to end his Willy Wonka inspiration. When the lucky winner (and his or her family) came to see him at the Cupertino office, Steve Jobs would greet them in a full Wonka-fied outfit. This was all part of a bigger promotional scheme, as it would be used to celebrate the one millionth iMac sold. Apple gets more press, the contest gets them more exposure, and everyone’s happy.

So, what stopped Jobs from cosplaying as Wonka? California state law requires that all sweepstakes not require contestants to purchase a product. That’s why you get those contests where they say “no purchase necessary” and you can write in for a “free” entry. With the giving out of free entries, the Cupertino sweepstakes lost its luster and thus, never came to be.

The Apple iPad has taken the world by storm and it has effectively spawned a huge generation of Android tablets too. What can we expect from iPad 2? Based on these leaked images, we have a pretty decent idea about the touchscreen display.

Despite earlier rumors that the iPad 2 would be offered in two sizes, it now seems much more likely that it’ll be only one size: the current one, only more resolute, thinner, and lighter.

This is in line with the current round of rumors and it is supported by the recent set of photos from 9to5Mac. The new display is still 9.7-inches, but the LCD is over a millimeter thinner and we can expect to see a smaller surrounding frame. It’s hard to tell if the resolution is improved, but we’re hearing that Apple could go as much as 4x the pixel density, offering a tablet-sized Retina display.

Is this enough to fend off the efforts of Honeycomb? What else does Cupertino have in store for us for the second-gen iPad? Seeing how we’re fully expecting a Spring launch, it won’t be long before we find out about that “one more thing.”
If you compare pictures of him today with pictures taken just a couple years ago, you’ll see that he appears considerably skinnier and more frail these days. So, he’s taking a time out.

Steve Jobs blasted out an e-mail message to all Apple employees (plus the usual press release channels) saying that he is taking “a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health.” This leave has been granted by the Apple board of directors.

Does this mean that he won’t be a part of the iPhone 5 announcement? Does this mean that he won’t be around for the unveiling of the iPad 2? No, not necessarily. He says that he will “continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for company.” He’ll just do it from home.

In terms of the day-to-day stuff in Cupertino, the turtleneck-wearing fearless leader is passing the reigns over to Tim Cook. He’s confident that Cook and the his team will “do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.”

You know, like the second Death Star. I mean, iPad 2. Here’s to a speedy recovery, Steve.

It was very nice of Apple to introduce the 13-inch version of the MacBook Pro earlier this year, even if it didn’t have some of the features that typically demand the “Pro” moniker. Given this blurring of the lines, we’re left to wonder what the team in Cupertino has planned for the regular old MacBook. That plastic wonder needs an upgrade too, doesn’t it?

As you know, the regular white MacBook is still being sold in Apple Stores, but most people have moved on to its aluminum successor. I’m not talking about the latter for the purposes of this article; we’re wondering about the fate of the former. And AppleInsider has some inside Apple news and rumors to share.

According to the popular Mac source, the current speculation points toward a slimmer and lighter construction than the currently available white MacBook, so it’s possible that it’ll take on the aluminum frame too. Further still, the “restructured internal architecture” will likely see the ditching of Firewire and other “legacy hardware.”

For the processor, the previous-gen Intel Core 2 processor will probably kick the bucket in favor of something a little more contemporary. Aside from that, we’re still left wondering how Apple will slot the updated MacBook into its fold.

After all, it has to stay cheaper than the $1300+ aluminum MacBooks, but it has to be more expensive than the upcoming iPad (MacBook Tablet). Either way, we’re expecting a new MacBook in the months to come. Too bad it didn’t get here in time for Back to School.
