The spectrum auction that eventually saw the launch of Wind Mobile and Mobilicity was supposed to do that, but the two new entrants have faced a lot of growing pains and they’re both reportedly on the market. And a big possible buyer for both Wind and Mobilicity is none other than Verizon Wireless.

Mobilicity to undergo CRTC scrutiny regarding ownership

Remember how Wind Mobile went through all sorts of trouble with the CRTC due to its concerns over foreign ownership and control? Well, the other major winner of that spectrum auction is about to jump through the exact same hoops because the CRTC will soon undertake an ownership review of Mobilicity.

The company that you once knew as DAVE Wireless has since been rebranded as Mobilicity and the CRTC will be going through their paperwork to determine if it is compliant with Canadian ownership and control requirements.

Foreign investment getting green light in Canadian wireless industry?

In case you didn’t already know, the Canadian government has some rather stringent restrictions on how the wireless industry can operate within our borders. They do not allow much in terms of foreign investment and control, but it seems that these shackles will soon be loosened.

Do you remember the hiccups that Wind Mobile had to overcome prior to its launch? Do you remember how the CRTC almost stopped Wind from opening its doors due to a sizable investment from a German firm? If these new changes do take place, situations like that will truly be a thing of the past.
