Ever had the urge to use a new Wii U controller for gaming and other activities on your PC? Developer and modder Chris Manning has bridged the gap and created software that makes it possible.

He has enabled the Nintendo’s Wii U big pad controller to communicate with your PC systems and even was kind enough to make the software available to you for download so you can mess around with this tweak as well. According to Manning, he isn’t done there, he is now working to release a new update that will allowing streaming to work and add touch screen support to the Wii U pad.

Chris adds, “Follow the readme.txt closely! This requires a bit of technical know-how to get working.” Below is a video of the software in action and a link to download your own copy.

Without touch and streaming capabilities, the use potential for this Wii U Controller ‘mod’ is limited at this stage, but there is plenty of future potential here. What do you think?

The younger crowd probably won’t see the point of this, but this could be awesome for those of us who killed endless days with our first handheld game system, the GameBoy. Chad Boughton, missing the tactile response of those 2 simple buttons and direction pad decided to swap out the dot matrix display in his GameBoy for his Galaxy Nexus’ Super AMOLED display.

Chad first removed the GameBoy screen and trimmed the case so a GNex case could be flushly mounted to the rest of the GameBoy body. His next challenge was to get the buttons to work wirelessly with the phone. He trimmed up the GameBoy’s circuit board to make room for the inner workings of a Wii Remote which he connected to the buttons of the GameBoy. After that he simply installed the Wii Controller IME app so the GameBoy would communicate with the Nexus. Below you can see a video of this awesome mod in action as well as some explanation of the construction.

I really hope some company takes the reins of this and produces a consumer version of this for the masses, I know I’d buy one!

I'm not sure if the "iCADE" moniker is really still all that appropriate, because this really has nothing to do with gaming in the arcade anymore. It's gaming in the living room. Like the other iCADE products, the iCADE 8-Bitty connects to your iPod, iPhone, or iPad via Bluetooth. The difference here is that they've expanded the scope to include Android folks, encouraging app developers to use the API to "make just about any game compatible with iCADE." Current supported games include Muffin Knight, Super Mega Worm, Warblade HD, Space Inversion 2, and HyperBowl.

It’s funny, really, how something that starts out as an April Fool’s joke ends up being hugely popular, spawning a whole series of products that all us retro gaming geeks lust after. The original iCade is still pretty awesome, the iCade Jr. is pretty cute, but apparently now ThinkGeek is ready with another offering that will actually take you away from the arcade altogether.

It’s called the iCADE 8-Bitty and it’s going to be showcased at the 2012 Toy Fair in New York City. In a nutshell, it’s a wireless controller that very much borrows its inspiration from the 8-bit era of gaming. It’s pretty much a replica of the old NES controller, except there are four face buttons instead of two. There are eight buttons in all, so I’m assuming the other four are shoulder buttons.

The iCADE 8-Bitty will sell for $24.99 when it launches “later this year.”

We saw the original iControlPad earlier this year, giving mobile gamers the opportunity to play their games using a more conventional gaming controller. However, you needed to buy special sides to fit your specific model of cell phone. That didn’t make a lot of sense, since the iControlPad did things over Bluetooth anyhow.

Well, a slightly updated version of the iControlPad has now been revealed and while the core idea remains the same — real gaming controls on a touchscreen smartphone — there is one notable difference: the clamp. You don’t need to buy special “sides” to hold your smartphone in place, because there’s an adjustable metal clamp that should be fairly universal. I can’t say whether it stretches out far enough for something like a Dell Streak, but I imagine something as big as the EVO 4G should be just fine.

As a quick refresher, the iControlPad features a d-pad, two analog nubs, four face action buttons, start and select, and a pair of trigger buttons toward the back. It works with Android straight up, as well as jailbroken iDevices. It’ll also work with non-jailbroken iPhones if you do the iCade emulation thing. Check it out for $62.49, including the metal clamp.
