Do you find that simply don’t have the time in the morning to brew up a cup of coffee before hitting the road for your daily commute? It looks like the Handpresso Auto isn’t the only car-worthy coffee machine anymore. It’s called the GSI Outdoors Commute Java Press and it’s designed to let you brew your morning joe while being stuck in rush hour traffic. And it promises to make some pretty great coffee too.

If you ask coffee aficionados, many of them will tell you that a French press is one of the best ways to go. The GSI Commute Java Press uses brewing hardware that is much like a French press, except it’s been purpose-built to work when you are in the car. You see, the typical French press has a round filter and a plunger, but this version uses an “inner mug” and an “outer mug” to mimic the same process. This creates a tight seal, so you end up with the coffee in your cup rather than spilling onto the floor and into your lap.

The insulating wall keeps your morning brew nice and hot for you too, so it’ll be able to survive that long and grueling commute to the office. The process is easy to do too, since you’re really just putting one mug into the other and letting the system do its thing. When it’s all done, you can open it up to add your cream and sugar as normal. One problem that I do see, though, is that the Commute Java Press doesn’t actually heat any of the water for you. You have to do that beforehand, which could add precious seconds to your morning routine.

Expect to find the Commuter Java Press from GSI Outdoor hit retail next spring for $19.95.

You can already get your fill of free Wi-Fi at McDonald’s and Starbucks, but you’ll soon latch onto the web with your double-double and Timbits too. Tim Hortons has announced that they’re bringing free wireless Internet to over 2,000 restaurants across Canada. They’re saying this will be the largest free Internet network in the country.

This is great for the coffee-drinking public, to be sure, but it’s also pretty great for Bell Canada. Remember that Bell is already serving up the free Wi-Fi at Starbucks, McDonald’s, Indigo and Chapters locations. Adding Tim Hortons to the mix with its over 2,000 locations has got to be a pretty fantastic contract. Tim Hortons underwent a “rigorous six-month testing process with multiple service providers,” finding that Bell “delivered a fast and reliable service.”

The high-speed Wi-Fi rollout at Timmy’s has already started and they expect to cover more than 90 percent of Tim Hortons locations by September. That’s just in time for all the college kids going back to school, returning to the routine of constant caffeination and studying.

There’s nothing like getting a creamy, steaming cup of espresso when you are driving your car in the middle of nowhere with your eyelids weighing a ton. If there’s no coffee shop for miles, either you can park your car somewhere safe to take a quick nap and be late for the important appointment, or you can make a hot cup of coffee for yourself with the Handpresso Auto, the latest addition into the range of mobile espresso machines from Handpresso.

The new in-car gadget looks similar to water bottles that are used by cyclists. It weighs in at 1.94 lbs (880g) and is powered by 12V DC from your car’s cigarette lighter. All you have to do is plug it in, add 1.79 ounces of water, place a circular E.S.E. (easy serving espresso) coffee pod in, close the lid, press the button and then wait for two minutes. After three beeps, your espresso will be ready. And the new espresso-maker is capable of creating 16 bars of pressure which will make sure that you get the perfect coffee.

The new product certainly looks like it’s going to be popular, but buyers should make sure that you stick to the rules of the road while you try (successfully) to become a mobile barista. You should pull over safely before you start playing with the Handpresso Auto.

Head here if you are interested in starting a coffee shop in your car and check out the video below to see the Handpresso Auto in action. It comes with a price tag of €149 (around US$200). And about the clip, do people really imagine like that after a cup of coffee?

Over the years I’ve become addicted to caffeine. I usually consume it in coffee form, you know, the liquid that you brew in a pot like normal people do. Sure, in the morning it can be troublesome and it inevitably leaving you with coffee breath, but you get to actually enjoy it. The AeroShot inhaler could be a much more convenient solution for some.

It comes from the same people that brought us the Le Whif chocolate inhaler, except they’ve swapped out the chocolate for a dose of caffeine. Each aerosol caffeine canister will deliver you about 100mg of caffeine from a shotgun shell looking device. Equivalent to a medium coffee at Tim Horton’s, or one third of a grande brewed coffee at Starbucks.

The AeroShot Pure Energy is a cylindrical device that easily fits in your pocket and it contains about six to eight “puffs” before you need to give it a refill. The canister delivers a fine powder with the 100mg of caffeine, along with some vitamin B. It all dissolves in your mouth almost instantly, leaving behind no aroma and giving you virtually zero calories.

This seems like an interesting idea, but I think I still prefer my coffee. If you’re more into puffing your caffeine, you can look to stores in Boston and New York where the AeroShot launches in January. Perhaps its for people trying to quit coffee?

Is the office coffee leaving a lot to be desired? Is it all bland and tasteless? If that’s the case, don’t go rushing out to Starbucks just yet. Instead, you might want to consider picking up the Aroma Lid from Mint Urban Technologies.

Most of what you taste is really about what you smell. In this way, the lid itself isn’t really changing the flavor profile of your morning java, but your nose is conveniently placed right at the smelly part of the coffee lid. As a result, each sip that you take will subjectively taste like it’s fuller in coffee flavor and complexity. (The lid might say Mint, but I’m thinking that’s just the name of the company and not indicative of the flavor you get.)

At least that’s the idea. It’s a cheap way out to getting a slightly better coffee experience. That said, you know how else you can have better coffee? Buy better coffee.

The next time you order a trenta-sized iced mocha frapp, you won’t need to whip out your wallet. You’ll just need to flash your iPhone at the barista.

Starbucks has rolled out its mobile payment system nationwide, hitting up nearly 7,000 company-operated coffee shops around the United States. The idea is that you can load up your Starbucks account with some funds (just like how you would with the physical Starbucks Card), boot up the iPhone app, show the barcode to the scanner, and enjoy your cuppa joe.

Yes, I said barcode. The mobile payment system being implemented by Starbucks uses a special 2D barcode rather than the near-field communications (NFC) technology being shoved into products like the Google Nexus S smartphone. They say that NFC just isn’t popular enough yet. “Once there are more users,” says Starbucks Card category manager of innovation Chuck Davidson, “we will adapt.”

In addition to the Starbucks Card app being offered on iOS for iPhone and iPod touch, there is also an app being launched for BlackBerry as well as one currently in development for Android.

I’m not convinced that this is necessarily any faster than whipping out an actual Starbucks Card, since you have to load up the app and show the barcode for it to work, but it is good to see that they’re innovating by doing more than making bigger cups and unveiling new logos.

The Starbucks Card Mobile App offers customers with BlackBerry smartphones, iPhone and iPod touch the fastest way to pay at nearly 6,800 U.S. company-operated Starbucks stores

SEATTLE, January 19, 2011 – Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) today announced the launch of mobile payment in all U.S. company-operated stores, allowing customers to pay for in-store purchases with select smartphones. Building on the earlier introduction of Starbucks Card Mobile App for select BlackBerry® smartphones, iPhone® and iPod® touch and a successful mobile payment test program, customers now have access to the largest mobile payment program in the U.S. and the fastest way to pay at Starbucks. This national program now includes nearly 6,800 company-operated stores and more than 1,000 Starbucks in U.S. Target locations.

In addition to engaging a loyal base of several million cardholders with the offering, Starbucks anticipates mobile payment will be a draw for customers looking to experience the speed, ease and convenience of paying with their mobile phone. “Today, one in five Starbucks transactions is made using a Starbucks Card and mobile payment will extend the way our customers experience and use their Starbucks Card,” said Brady Brewer, vice president Starbucks Card and Brand Loyalty. “With mobile payment, the Starbucks Card platform further elevates the customer experience by delivering convenience, rewarding loyalty and continuing to build an emotional connection with our customers.”

To experience mobile payment at Starbucks, customers just need to download the free Starbucks Card Mobile App for select BlackBerry smartphones, iPhone or iPod touch mobile devices. More than one-third of U.S. Starbucks customers use smartphones, of which nearly three quarters use BlackBerry smartphone or iPhone mobile devices. In addition to the mobile payment capability, the app allows customers to manage their Starbucks Card account, check their card balance, reload their card with any major credit card (iPhone users can also use the PayPal feature), check their My Starbucks Rewards status and find a nearby Starbucks store with the store locator feature.

Customers can pay with their smartphone by holding their mobile device in front of a scanner on the countertop and scan the Starbucks Card Mobile App’s on-screen barcode to make a purchase. Customers have successfully adopted this technology in test markets in Seattle, Northern California, New York and more than 1,000 Starbucks in U.S. Target stores.

Mobile payment is built on the Starbucks Card platform, which continues to experience significant customer adoption. Customers loaded more than $1.5 billion on Starbucks Cards in 2010, an increase of 21 percent over 2009, driven in part by the My Starbucks Rewards program which provides benefits to customers who pay with a registered Starbucks Card at participating stores. With the introduction of the quick and easy Starbucks Card Mobile App and the mobile payment feature, customer will find yet another reason to use their Starbucks Card for payment.

“Mobile payment is just one example of how we’re continually innovating on behalf of our customers to enhance the Starbucks Experience,” said Brewer. “A growing segment of our customers use smartphones, and through the Starbucks Card Mobile App, we’re providing them with the fastest way to pay.”

To download the Starbucks Card Mobile App and check out mobile payment, BlackBerry smartphone users can text the word “GO” to 70845 or visit http://www.starbucks.com/coffeehouse/mobile-apps/starbucks-card-mobile-bb from their device (Standard message and data rates apply.).
