Who said that you had to spend an arm and a leg to get your very own tablet? Prices have come down substantially and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a tablet cheaper than the Zeepad 7.0 with Android 4.0.

No, you can’t possibly expect the Zeepad 7.0 tablet to compete with much more expensive counterparts like the newest iPad or the Asus Transformer Infinity, but you also have to realize that it sells for a fraction of the price. What you get here is a 7.0-inch multitouch tablet, powered by Ice Cream Sandwich.

The specs are actually not too shabby with a Boxchip Allwinner A13 Cortex A8 1.2GHz processor and 512MB of RAM to go along with the 4GB of internal storage. There’s a microSD slot there to give you more space for documents, pictures, music, videos and so on. You get support for such apps as Skype video calling, Netflix movie streaming and more. The customer reviews are quite positive, citing good build quality and decent performance. It’s said to handle Shadowgun and Dead Trigger without too much trouble.

Pick it up from Amazon.com for $79.90, which is 47% off the regular list price of $149.99. You get free super saver shipping too.

Are you interested in getting the cheapest tablet money can buy, and you can’t convince yourself to spend the $329 on an iPad Mini or the $199 on a Nexus 7? You can go even cheaper with something like this Pandigital Android Tablet, which happens to be on sale for $66.95.

The Pandigital 72-70FW Tablet Computer originally listed for $299.99, but now that has been slashed all the way down by a whopping 78%. Of course, you can’t expect to get something quite as good as what is offered by the top-tier brands, but this is way cheaper and could be almost as useful.

It’s a 7-inch 600×800 pixel display on here, along with 1GB of internal memory, SD card slot for up to 32GB of additional storage, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, some version of Google Android and an ARM processor. It won’t floor you, nor am I sure it even has access to the official Google Play Store, but this is about as cheap as it gets.

Find the Pandigital 7-inch Android tablet on Amazon.com for $67, including free super saver shipping.

Not long ago, the Indian government sponsored the creation of a tablet from DataWind that had modest specs but was priced low enough to make it affordable to the public.

Thanks to the runaway success of the original model, called Aakash, a much beefier 7-inch second model of the UbiSlate 7, has now been announced.

The UbiSlate 7 touts the following specs:

Android 2.3

7-inch touchscreen with 800×480 resolution

Cortex A8 700 MHz Processor

3 hours battery life

Wifi and GPRS

HD Video playback

one USB 2.0 port

256MB of RAM

2GB Internal Storage

MicroSD slot for memory expansion

While these specifications aren’t exactly what some of us would call impressive, the price point of $57 US dollars certainly is. This model is actually $10 more expensive than the original, but features much improved specifications particularly in processing department (the original had a measly 336MHz Arm11 processor).

The device is expected to hit the markets in India in January, with DataWind planning to produce roughly 1,000 units per day.

In response to the rise of the Apple iPad, it seems like all the Android folks decided that $499 was the benchmark price. Just about all of the Honeycomb offerings launched at that price. Well, while it’s not as cheap as the Kobo Vox or Kindle Fire, the Lenovo IdeaPad K1 is certainly more affordable at just $349.

I spotted this price at Future Shop in Canada, but it seems that at least a few other retailers are offering variants of the K1 at that price point. This is notable for a couple of reasons. First, it undercuts the Eee Pad Transformer 16GB by a solid fifty bucks. Second, the Lenovo has 32GB of internal memory.

To get the Eee Pad Transformer in 32GB (without the keyboard dock) is still in the $499 range, so you could say that the IdeaPad K1 is undercutting by $150. Yes, this is still almost double the price of the Kindle Fire, but you are getting a real Honeycomb tablet here with real Android Market access and a peppy NVIDIA Tegra2 processor. Is that cheap enough yet? Or are you willing to pay more when the Kal-El tablets arrive?

Perhaps you missed out on that $99 fire sale on the HP TouchPad or you don’t want to try and hack Android onto that device. Whatever the case, the elusive “cheap tablet” is still eluding you. Well, maybe you have an option here in the form of the Lenovo IdeaPad A1. After all, it carries an MSRP of just $199.

So, what do you get for half the price of an Eee Pad Transformer? The IdeaPad A1 comes with a 7-inch 1024×600 display and runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The hope is that you’ll be able to upgrade to 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich when that becomes available, but that’s very much in the air. The other thing that’s up in the air is Market support. I can’t seem to tell whether this is “officially” supported by Google and, thus, whether you can get into Android Market.

If not, you’re mostly stuck with the pre-loaded apps, plus any apps that might be available through a Lenovo-specific repository. One nice feature is that the IdeaPad A1 has offline GPS, complete with offline maps. This is great when you are traveling and don’t have an international data plan (or don’t want to get gouged with roaming fees). There’s also something called Lenovo Social Touch, an interface for integrating your email and social networking activity. This concept, of course, has already been explored by other tablet and smartphone makers.

In the end, it looks like the A1 will sit on par with something like the old Galaxy Tab (not the 7.7 or 10.1). It also doesn’t help that Lenovo isn’t forthcoming with info about the processor, so this could be as slow as molasses too.

Yesterday we saw the announcement of a $500 tablet coming from India called the Olivepad. Today we have another tablet, this time a prototype also coming from India and is priced at a ridiculous $35. Apparently the price could go to as low as $20 or $10. It will even have green features, like the option to be recharged by solar cells. The OS will be Linux-based, however Android is one of the possibilities. Open Office will be included, a media player, and a host of other free apps.

The bill of materials for the prototype came to $47. Amazing, and no easy feat considering the iPad rang in at $230 for the lowest end model. Universities in India such as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) have partnered with the government to develop the low cost components used in the tablet. Students have created their own motherboard and PCBs for the device but have no real manufacturing or distribution plans. A similar scenario from Indian start-up Notion Ink has promised the Adam tablet for quite some time. The One Laptop Per Child Project is also another program which never came to fruition. The odds of this prototype being mass-produced is not in the favor of the students. It does however seem like a great feat of engineering if it can be built at such a low cost (excluding labour I’m sure).
