Here we go again. Talk about the radiation emitted from cell phones has always been a controversial topic and now another study is indicating that those mobile phones might not be the healthiest things in the world. In fact, the study is saying that “cell phoens used in the shirt or pants pocket exceed FCC exposure guidelines and that children absorb twice as much microwave radiation from phones as do adults.”

To be published in the Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine journal, “Exposure Limits: The underestimation of absorbed cell phone radiation, especially in children” says that setting the exposure limits based on adult absorption may not be terribly appropriate. Using the industry-designed process for evaluating microwave radiation, the study found that children were taking in twice as much to their heads.

But there’s more. Further study revealed that the hippocampus and hypothalamus in a child’s brain could be absorbing up to triple what an adult brain absorbs, as well as greater absorption in the eyes and up to 10 times more in the bone marrow. Presumably, this is because children have generally thinner bones and fewer defense mechanisms.

The FCC standard is based on a “a large man whose 40 brain tissues are assumed to be exactly the same,” but the paper is pushing for a more varied approach for different ages, including pregnant women.

We’ve heard all kinds of reports about how cell phones might be causing tumors, but a recent study is now suggesting that your mobile phone could be killing your sperm too. So much for another generation of mobile phone geeks?

A research team from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario has teamed up with scientists from the Medical University of Graz in Austria. In their study, they found that cell phone use is linked to lower sperm quality and a decrease in fertility. Ironically, cell phone usage seems to also increase the overall level of testosterone in the body. And ya, it’s killing bees too.

“Our findings were a little bit puzzling,” says Rany Shamloul, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Queen’s University in Canada and a co-author of the study. “We were expecting to find different results, but the results we did find suggest that there could be some intriguing mechanisms at work.”

So, your Android and iPhones could be making you puff out your chest, but your little soldiers are getting injured as a result. And it’s not like you’re producing too many reinforcements either. While there is more circulating testosterone, there is a lower level of luteinizing hormone. LH plays a big role in the reproductive system. The lesson for today is, if you have any plans to reproduce, it may be a good idea to limit your cell phone use and perhaps not keep it so close to the family jewels.

This paper will only show the incidence of brain tumors, acoustic neuromas or parotid gland tumor research was stopped years ago, according to a report. It’s sad to see such critical information being handled so haphazardly. I for one minimize cellphone use as much as possible and use a wired headset whenever a situation allows me. Will the results of this study effect the way you use your cellphone?

We’ve all heard the studies telling us that cell phone radiation fries our brains and gives us cancer. While some may argue that the evidence is anything but conclusive, it’s probably smart to err on the side of caution. If you’re looking to protect yourself from said radiation, these Pong cases may be for you.

The version for the Apple iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS is already available, but Pong is expanding their lineup to include BlackBerry smartphones as well. They’re starting out with the older 8300 series devices, but the nice representative said that they’ll be looking to approach the “most popular models” in the BlackBerry line too. You can probably expect a Storm or Bold model at some point.

The idea is that these otherwise nondescript-looking silicone cases come with a special embedded “Pong module” that protects your head from those nasty beams. Meanwhile, the case protects your phone from damage and the silicone will not block out your signal strength.

Both the BlackBerry Curve and Apple iPhone versions will be available in your choice of green, black, white, or pink and they will sell for $49.95 each. These are set to launch in the spring.

You know how they say men shouldn’t keep their cell phones in their pockets, because the radiation can affect their fertility? As a result, some men have decided to use a belt clip-style holster for their cell phones, but now this configuration is revealing another issue altogether. Care for a replacement hip?

HealthDay News is reporting on a new study that says that cell phones can have a harmful effect on bone density. The study, conducted by Turkish researchers, would then lead us to believe that even when you take your phone and place it in a hip holster than the radiation could penetrate into your bones and lead to problems down the road.

As with so much of this kind of research, this study published in the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery (September 2009) cannot assume a causal relationship; only a correlational one. And we all know the difference between correlation and causation, right?

So, let’s get this straight. You shouldn’t put the phone in your pocket, because it’ll affect your ability to produce progeny. You shouldn’t hold the phone to your head, because it’ll fry your brain. And now you shouldn’t use a holster, because it’ll weaken the bones. Maybe the whole idea of “murse” is going to pick up some more steam.
