The next generation Xbox (Xbox 720 maybe) codenamed Durango is expected to be an impressive gaming console. The latest rumors suggest that the machine is going to be a powerhouse, but will also be a big blow to the used games market.

According to VG247, Microsoft is planning to release the Xbox 360 successor during Christmas 2013, which is also rumored to be the launch timing for the PlayStation 4/Orbis, and the new console will feature either four or six core processors. It will also boast two GPUs that will be as fast as “two PCs taped together” and a built-in Kinect sensor.

The new rumor also suggests that the Durango will arrive with a Blu-ray drive. We are a bit doubtful about that info as we heard a lot of reports earlier that suggested the company was thinking about moving its content delivery to digital download only.

But what will be the most alarming info for many is that the Durango will require an internet connection at all times while it is being used. That move is most probably for combating used game sales. A mandatory internet connection could mean that there will be a requirement to authenticate discs and lock them to user accounts, and this would restrict the resale of games; if there are any discs that is.

But, of course, none of this should be taken without a pinch of salt. Do let us know whether you will be interested in the new Xbox if it comes with the above said features, and stay tuned for updates.

Who wants to deal with physical media anymore? It’s so much easier when you just stream your content over an Internet connection, but you might not get the same high-level experience that you get with a physical disc and all the studios can be more concerned about piracy and illegitimate viewing. So, Rovi has come along with a new solution called DivX Plus Streaming.

To be added to Rovi’s existing library of white label digital entertainment technologies, DivX Plus Streaming provides for the “secure distribution of premium video entertainment.” This includes not only high quality video, but also the other multimedia features that you would normally get with a physical Blu-ray disc. DivX Plus Streaming should work with a range of connected devices, including smartphones, HDTVs, game consoles, set-top boxes, and computers.

“The inclusion of features such as smooth fast-forward, quick stream start and subtitle support are real consumer pain points with existing streaming solutions and will help differentiate DivX Plus Streaming in the market,” said Colin Dixon, Senior Partner at The Diffusion Group. And yes, this also means that the whole service is tightly knit with a “flexible DRM framework” with rentals, subscriptions, and outright purchases.

Onkyo of all companies has announced its latest notebook, a 3D-capable R5 Series Intel Core i5 powerhouse. Its 3D system is unspecified, but will be able to convert 2D content from Blu-ray and downloads for 3D viewing on the impressive high-definition 15.6-inch wide glow (1,366 × 768) LCD.

You’ll get a set of 3D glasses with the notebook, 4GB memory, 500GB harddrive, WiFi, Blu-ray and a digital TV tuner. Its not often we see notebooks from Onkyo, and with a Japan release next month at a price of 120,000 yen ($1400 USD), we tend to think this is more of a 3D novelty offering more than anything. The Onkyo R515A5-3D runs Windows 7 and has a meager 3.8 hour battery runtime.

Samsung today launched a 3D-capable portable Blu-ray player, this sucker will play 1080p on its 10.3-inch screen, but don’t go putting on those 3D glasses just yet.

Although it is 3D-capable, it is only capable of outputting 3D. Mobile displays have yet to enter the 3D arena just yet, and Samsung’s BD-C8000 is only meant for outputting 3D to a capable 3DTV. Battery life is only rated at 3 hours, let’s hope that rating is accurate and we’ll at least get to watch a feature length flick. The little player has built-in Wi-Fi and HDMI, and it’s priced at $500, but selling for $449 on Amazon.
