Flipboard is a great app to have on your iPad. The app allows you to add content from your favorite feeds and converts it all in to a great looking magazine. While the function and form of the app is great, it was a little limited in what it would allow you to do. Enter Flipboard 2.0.

The latest version of Flipboard is now designed to allow users to create their own virtual magazines using content from various sources. You can then name your E-zine how you like, add a description and even allow it to be viewed publicly. Other feature updates include better search and faster loading of images along with smoother transitions.

Have you tried out the latest version of Flipboard yet? If so, what do you think?

Google has rolled out an update for the Gmail app so that now includs new actionable notifications for Jelly Bean phones and tablets.

Basically the update offers users a number of new features from inside the Android notification window, rather than actually having to open the Gmail app itself. Deleting, archiving and replying to emails from the Gmail app will now be that much faster and more convenient.

While actionable notifications is only coming to users on Android 4.1 and 4.2 Jelly Bean, ICS also gets faster searching and a few bug and performance upgrades. Froyo users aren’t completely without luck here either, as they a few performance updates added to the mix as well.

You can update Gmail via Google Play, but be warned that some users are experiencing problems with the updated app and the Light Flow LED notification app. Have you downloaded the update yet? What do you think of the changes?

For those of you running Microsoft’s newest version of Windows OS, Windows 8, listen up because this will surely interest you. One of the biggest complaints from users of Windows 8 is the fact the new metro and RT Windows apps always run in fullscreen mode and not in the desktop mode. This makes it difficult for users who have don’t have a touch laptop or tablet. While Metro does work with non-touch setups even in fullscreen, we are creatures of habit and getting used to Windows 8 has been difficult for some. Stardock has created a program to allow us to continue our multi-window multi-tasking ways, called ModernMix.

With Stardock’s Windows 8 ModernMix app, you are able to run all those metro apps in desktop mode. This allows you to resize them, move them around and multi-task with them, rather than being forced to use them exclusively in fullscreen mode. See the video below for the app in action. Stardock has been developing this for sometime and has just this week released a beta version for the public, for you to try. You can get the app directly from the Stardock website for only $4.99, much cheaper than a Windows downgrade.

This is an app that I’m sure will be flying off the virtual shelf, I have already downloaded it myself. Do you plan to get it? If you already have it, what do you think?

[ source ]

You are miles away from your home and suddenly you get the feeling that you left the door unlocked or the lights on. Of course you can call a relative or your best friend with a spare key, but you won’t have to do that if you have the Prizm Manager mobile app in your smartphone or tablet.

What you see above is Prizm, a 5-inch touchscreen controller, which utilizes the Z-Wave wireless system to help you communicate with your home appliances. With this gadget and your app, you can turn light switches on and off, lock and unlock doors, control shades, and the tech even notifies you when a door or window is opened, so you will know when someone is trying to leave or enter your house.

Prizm’s makers have apparently developed a cloud platform that will allow you to “stay connected to your home from anywhere in the world”.

Prizm is a kickstarter project and its creators are looking for help to enter production. So far, they have raised $12,311 with a $200,000 goal and 27 days to go. Check out the video below to know more about Prizm and tell us what you think about it.

Not so long ago rumours that YouTube was planning to launch paid subscription channels were batted around the the web. According to new code found by Android Police in the newly updated YouTube app, those rumours are tru.

The code below shows us the subscription confirmation message users will get once they sign up or unsubscribe to these channels.

< string name=”paid_channel_subscribe_message”>You can only subscribe to this paid channel on your computer.< /string>
< string name=”paid_channel_unsubscribe_message”>You can only unsubscribe from this paid channel on your computer.< /string>

We don’t know when YouTube Pay-To-View will go live, but reports suggest low monthly payments from just $1 rising to $5 a month. What do you think, would you pay a monthly premium for special YouTube content?

Neuromuscular problems, as you might know, are difficult to diagnose as doctors do not possess an analysis tool for quantitatively measuring the performance of the patients. Doctors have to rely on qualitative or subjective info. Well, that may not be the case from now on. Introducing NeuroAssess, the technology developed by the researchers at Harvard University’s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering.

It’s a tablet app which may help doctors to measure quantitatively the neuromuscular performance of, say, aged patients or a sportsperson with a concussion.

All that a patient has to do is use a stylus to trace a moving target around the circle that’s on the tablet’s screen. The rest is done by the app. It measures the slightest deviations from the circle and the data it collects will be analyzed based on age, sex and handedness, and the final result will be a score.

The researchers have already done tests on 150 healthy people aged 21 to 95 and so they have baseline data. So now the researchers can test the app on patients.

Lei Stirling, a Wyss senior staff engineer, says, “One day it might sit next to the thermometer and pressure cuff in the doctor’s office. Just as your blood pressure is recorded during every visit, so could your neuromuscular score be tracked over time to determine progress through recovery and rehabilitation.”

Check out the video to know more.

Recently there has been a huge amount of hype for the BlackBerry Z10, and why shouldn’t there be? Its a new handset running a new OS, with interesting potential. The only shortfall is the fact the handset will only come in black and white for consumers. For lucky developers that submitted apps in time for the BB10 launch, BlackBerry has tossed out a little thank you by allowing them to purchase a limited edition Red BlackBerry Z10.

Alec Saunders, Blackberry’s VP of Developer Relations, made the announcement during the BlackBerry Jam Europe 2013. Not only will these handsets be red, but they will also have an engraved serial number, showing just how limited edition they are. While most I imagine will keep these handsets for bragging rights of sorts, surely some will attempt to turn a quick profit and post them online on sites like Ebay. Surely these handsets will fetch a premium due to their rarity.

If given the opportunity, would you snag one of these red handsets?

About one week ago, RIM launched its latest attempt to gather apps with the Last Chance Android Port-a-Thon event. The suspected last in a series of events promising developers $100 for every approved app submitted by developers, 20 max. Not too long ago, RIM received 15,000 app submissions through one of these events, but the most recent attempt landed them nearly 20,000 with the official numbers coming in at 19,071 apps.

While they will still need to go in and weed out the bad and inoperable ones, this definitely helps them attain their previously promised 70,000 apps by the launch of the BlackBerry 10 on January 30th.

BlackBerry is still far behind the number of apps available for iOS and Android, however the next big thing could be among these submissions.

A majority of the staple apps should be among this 70,000, but we will not know for sure until the official release on the 30th. So until then we can just speculate and hope. Are you planning on picking up the BlackBerry 10? Is app selection a concern for you? Or even a deterrent to not pick up the phone?

It seems that Blackberry has made changes to the name of its BlackBerry App World store, renaming it simply BlackBerry World. They made this change to reflect some changes in the type of content you can purchase in the store for your Blackberry 10 and future devices. There will now be videos and music as well as apps. The new Blackberry World is being touted as your one-stop shope for all thing mobile entertainment, which is really quite a similar move to efforts like Google Play (which originally was just Android Market).

According to RIM, “with BlackBerry World, there are various ways to browse, download, buy, and manage apps using a BlackBerry smartphone, BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, or desktop or laptop computer,— inspiration is at your fingertips. And if you find something you love and want to tell the world, you can easily share it with your friends over BBM, Facebook and Twitter. Also, you can simply tap smartphones together and invite your friends to download it — just like that.”

The update will to the web storefront first with it being released to BlackBerry smartphones and PlayBook tablets within the coming weeks. What do you think, are you excited to see that RIM is stepping up its game and adding more great content?

Hang on to your seats texters, SwiftKey is getting close to the public release of its new update, SwiftKey Flow.

Signups are now complete for beta testing of the new release. Yesterday Evan Tapper, SwiftKey’s community manager sent out the following message to the beta testers:

Hi,

Thank you for registering your interest in SwiftKey Flow. We’re very pleased that so many of you are eager to help us test it out.

SwiftKey Flow is very nearly ready for beta testing. When it is, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to download it and how to leave us feedback. Your comments are very important to us – you’ll be a vital part of making sure that the public release of SwiftKey with SwiftKey Flow is our best keyboard yet.

To make sure that you receive the SwiftKey Flow testing email and it doesn’t end up in your spam folder, please add feedback@swiftkey.net to your list of contacts.

In the meantime, why not nominate SwiftKey in the TechCrunch 2012 Crunchies? We’d love it if you could nominate us here http://bit.ly/skcrunchie and let your friends know.

All the best,

Evan Tapper,
SwiftKey Community Manager

An official release date hasn’t been given, but with beta testing starting, I’m sure we can expect it very soon. SwiftKey Flow will be an update to the already existing SwiftKey 3. if you haven’t updated to SwiftKey 3 yet, head over to the Play Store to download it for just $3.99.
