Today could potentially be a frustrating day for many small business owners, web viewers and those who spend time on any site that is connected with GoDaddy. If you haven’t heard the news yet, the domain registrar and Web hosting company is down.

The issues at GoDaddy today have led to temporary unavailability for well over a million websites in the process. GoDaddy’s main site is up, but many of the companies that use it for hosting are experiencing problems related to an attack on the registrar.

GoDaddy says they are well aware of the problem and are working for a fix. Meanwhile, a hacker known as “Anonymous” has claimed responsibility for the attack that is plaguing many websites connected to GoDaddy. GoDaddy email is also not working right, at the moment.

How long are things going to be down? Hard to say. It could be a few more hours, it could be all day.

Is this attack on GoDaddy affecting you or a website you own, love or work for?

When the FBI and the DOJ seized Megaupload earlier, they certainly might have guessed that a retaliatory attack will arrive at any moment. But unfortunately they weren’t prepared for the strike that came later on from Anonymous which has now left quite a number of sites completely dead.

As you already know, Megaupload is now officially dead and a few of its employees are in custody as well. The hacker group that calls itself Anonymous, which was already not too impressed with the proposed antipiracy bills, boiled over after the attack on the website and has flown into a hacking fury.

Anonymous has launched a counterattack against the websites of the DOJ (DoJ.gov), the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Universal Music Group (UMG), FBI and many other websites related to the movie and music industries.

To the horror of many industry related sites, the DDoS attack, which appears to be one of the biggest coordinated attacks ever assembled by the hacking collective, is still ongoing at the moment. Although many sites managed to come alive, many others are still suffering.

Anonymous has released a statement following the attacks. Check it out here.

We learned yesterday about Sony accusing Anonymous of facilitating the hacking of Sony’s servers, resulting in the PSN nightmare that has been going on the last couple of weeks. Anonymous has just responded.

Thankfully for Sony, Anonymous didn’t respond with another DDOS. Instead, they took the more civil route and issued a press release. In it, the group says that it was not involved in the credit card fraud at all, saying that they do not condone credit card theft. That said, they make no specific mention of denying involvement, either direct or indirect, with the hacking attack that resulted in the theft of thousands of credit card numbers.

It is very well possible that Anonymous was involved in a DDOS (perhaps in response to the Geohot lawsuit), which in turn made Sony’s PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment services “more vulnerable” to the ensuing credit card theft.

“A group of standard online thieves would have every reason to frame Anonymous in order to put law enforcement off the track,” Anonymous said. “If a legitimate and honest investigation into the credit card theft is conducted, Anonymous will be found not liable.”
