They were supposed to get a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich at the same time, but I guess that hinge in the middle turned out to be a bit of a speed bump. As you might recall, the Sony Tablet S got the official ICS update late last month, but Tablet P owners have been stuck with Honeycomb in the interim. That’s changing now, Sony is ready to push out Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to the dual screen Sony Tablet P. As with the Tablet S, the update will be pushed out automatically via the software update feature.

The skinned version of Android 4.0 going to the Tablet P is pretty much identical to the one for the Tablet S, except that it’ll be displayed across the two screens. What this means is that you’ll get access to the “small apps” of the browser, remote control, and calculator that can then be overlaid on top of the full app you have running behind it. There’s also the quick access to the camera from the home screen, as well as the inclusion of a native screenshot feature. The better file manager with full direct access to the SD card should be there too, as will the “enhanced gallery media viewer.”

Android 4.0 ICS update for the Sony Tablet P will be officially unleashed onto the world on May 24. While the official announcement only made mention of the Japanese market, the international release should be at or around the same time. All you have to do is keep your Tablet P connected to Wi-Fi and it’ll let you know when a software update is available.

No, it’s not quite the same as getting your hands on the upcoming Nexus Prime and tasting Android Ice Cream Sandwich, but it is nice to see that the old darling of the Droid world is still getting some love. If you happen to have an unbraded version of the Google Nexus One, you should be receiving an OTA update for Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread.

The over the air update should be a seamless upgrade, like most other updates to Android, and it has been confirmed that this update “doesn’t seem to hobble the Wi-Fi tethering option that some Nexus S owners experienced.” That’s the good news.

I wouldn’t say that it’s bad news, but the neutral news is that Android 2.3.6 doesn’t seem to come along with too much in terms of fancy bells and whistles. It appears that this is mostly a security patch and minor bug fix. In any case, the update is rolling out to the unbranded Nexus Ones so if you’re still rocking one of these gems, you might want to check if you can have it yet.

Not that long ago, Samsung pushed out a TouchWiz UI update for its Galaxy Tab 10.1, but it appears that this update comes with a bug. Samsung has apparently stopped the updating process, giving them the time to "assess progress and ensure it is a positive experience for users."

Just when everything seemed to be going so well for Samsung, more than a few curveballs have been thrown in the direction of the Korean giant. First, sales of its tablet have been halted in a few regions around the world. Then, Google acquired Motorola, leaving the Android community questioning the move. And so, Samsung is moving ahead with a very hesitant gait.

Not that long ago, Samsung pushed out a TouchWiz UI update for its Galaxy Tab 10.1, but it appears that this update comes with a bug. Samsung has apparently stopped the updating process, giving them the time to “assess progress and ensure it is a positive experience for users.”

Some people have reported some serious lag after going to the newest version of TouchWiz. All along, these various UI skins have been a way for Android makers to differentiate themselves from one another, but now it’s possible that Samsung rushed this update a little too soon.

Well, that didn’t take very long at all. The hotly anticipated Google Nexus S with its Gingerbread-flavored Android operating system has been out for less than a week and it’s already getting its first update. The Nexus S — sourced from Samsung — will get the first over-the-air (OTA) update bringing the system to GRH78, offering “important bug fixes” and the latest version of Maps. Very early reports from users don’t seem to indicate any major changes that are clearly visible, but we’ll keep our ears to the ground to see what Google has done with this update.

If you’d rather not wait for the OTA update, you can do the manual thing and download the file yourself, rename it to update.zip, move it to the root of your internal storage, shut off your phone, turn it back on while holding volume up (bootloader), choose “recovery” using the volume keys, select with the power button, wait for the red triangle, press volume up and power, and choose update. Whew. Maybe the OTA method is worth waiting for.
