Huawei’s head of consumer electronics, Richard Yu, isn’t the type to mix words, boldly declaring: ”The best smartphone is from Huawei. Not from our competitors.”

And it’s easy to see why he feel so confident. His company has just unveiled two of the most talked about phones of CES, the Ascend Mate and Ascend D2, and they surely have more great products to come.

In an interview with The Verge, Yu claimed that Samsung’s plastic is cheap when asked about the Galaxy S3, and suggested Apple lacks innovation without Steve Jobs.

Unfortunately for Huawei, phone carriers in the U.S don’t seem to share Yu’s passion for Huawei products. The company is having a hard time gaining a footing in the high end phone market, and are struggling to shake off their “cheap phone” persona.

As optimistic as ever though, Yu says that Huawei just “needs some time for the US carriers to accept high end product from Huawei”. With phones like the 5-inch Ascend D2 and 6.1-inch Ascend Mate, which cost around 20% less then rivals, I personally don’t think it will take long for that to happen.

What do you think, excited by Huawei’s latest offerings or not?

Despite Microsoft’s efforts with Windows Phone, the two biggest players in the smartphone game continue to be Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. Just when we thought that Android was on the rise, it appears that the iOS smartphone market share is actually growing, breaking the 50% mark in the United States.

Last month, a report was issued saying that iOS had a 48.1% market share when it came to smartphones, compared to the combined 46.7% enjoyed by Android devices. The lead was slight, but it was there. Now, a more recent report is saying that the iOS market share has increased to 53.3%. The assumption is that this has to do with the launch of the iPhone 5, despite the many troubles that it has faced. Android’s market share shrank to 42% over the same period.

The outlook is that the iPhone’s smartphone market share will continue to rise in the US now that it’s broken the 50% mark. It should be noted that Android is still much larger elsewhere, though, getting 61% of the smartphone market in Europe.

Interestingly, it’s possible that Android will continue to shrink in the US as some people make the switch to Windows Phone 8. After all, it’s the same companies — HTC, Samsung, etc. — that are doing both WP8 and Android. And then there’s Nokia with WP8, too. It should also be noted that these figures are for smartphones only. It appears clear enough that the iPad continues to dominate the tablet arena for now.

Looks like Gartner was a little too conservative with its prediction. We all know that Android is on the rise, but we didn’t think this day would come so soon. Google Android is now the world’s best-selling smartphone platform.

This is according to the Q4 2010 sales figures as released by Reuters, which is a little different that exact market share, but it does represent what people are buying. It’s only a matter of time. For Q4, a total of 33.3 million Android smartphones were shipped. Compare that to the 31.0 million Symbian phones shipped by Nokia, the previous leader.

What’s really interesting is that Symbian actually increased its sales (29.9 million in Q3), but it lost market share due to the more rapid adoption of Android (which had only 20.3 million devices shipped in Q3). Remember that it was only in Q4 2009 that Symbian had a 44.4% market share; that’s now dwindled down to 30.6%, despite an increase of about seven million units over the same period.

It probably helps that there are so many manufacturers on board with the increasingly mature Android platform. Compare it to the 16.2 million iPhones, and 14.6 million BlackBerry devices sold in Q4. Not surprisingly, Windows Phone 7 isn’t exactly all that popular just yet with just 3.1 million sold in Q4.
